Would you support Texas in its secession?

Which side do you pick in the Second American Civil War?

No, it wasn't about slavery. Well, many people wanted it to be about slavery, but the North didn't invade the South to end slavery. What did Lincoln say? If I can save the Union without ending slavery, so be it. Or something like that... The South didn't want to keep paying high taxes, so a secession movement began in Charleston SC - the birthplace of an earlier secession movement based on tax policy. Lincoln said the only reason he'd send federal troops southward was taxes, that says it all...

C'mon, you've watched President after President lie us into war based on what sounds best to the masses and you're still buying into last century's BS? ;)

600,000 dead, millions maimed...

or

two nations (or 1 if the Repubs dropped the protectionism) with slavery in one for another 10-30 years

You do believe slavery was on the way out, right? Banned in the North and much of Europe, new inventions making it less efficient, the abolitionist movement winning the battle of ideas... You know, by your morality George Bush could have sacrificed many many more Americans to oust Saddam ;)

You evade the point. There was never a possibility of war except that the South refused to accept that slavery was not going to be expanded into new western territories. They refused to accept the results of elections, so they committed treason. The North did not declare war to end slavery, the South declared war to keep slavery. Slavery was the one and only cause of the war.

So what was the North to do once the South declared war? Appeasement? Roll over and play dead?

Wow look how many people care if Texas secedes. Make this same thread for any other state and guaranteed it won't be this juicy... What it all boils down to is, Texas has personality. Other states are just plain boring in comparison to Texas. Fact: back in school, I found Texas history more fascinating than U.S. history.

And candle you are an e-tard lol. You only supported Texas as a Texan cause I did. I was 1st to vote for that choice.

Ok. Commence with the Texas jokes now. Try to come up with ones I haven't heard before.

Did you get it taught to you by someone other than an athletic coach? I found it rather boring and repetitive. It was also pretty one sided (Mexicans bad, Texans good!).

We should also support New Jersey's right to secede, we don't want them anyway.

Do I need to repeat myself?

Please take your crappy what-caused-the-civil-war arguments out of my thread, please. It is off topic from my hypothetical scenario. You can start a new thread if you want.

Edit: Didn't see El Mac, but it's here for emphasis.

The subtext of the conversation is a journey in the ironic and the absurd. I can't be the only person wondering if it was your intent to sustain the notion or if it was purely coincidental in which case I must apologize - innocence of babes and cruelty unbecoming; and all that. In any case, it was scarcely spam, entirely serious and with a clear purpose - for those so inclined to look past their collective noses.

All this bla bla bla to say that you don't have anything intelligent to say?

Uh...all states have interesting characteristics . Sorry to burst your bubble.

California? New York? Louisiana? Alaska? Hawaii?

I lived in Texas and hated it. If you are not from there, you are treated like a second class citizen. It is hot, humid and full of nasty little creatures that bite. I just wish Texans would get off their high horse and realize that the state sucks. Where else do people rally around a loosing battle like "The Alamo"?

If they do leave the Union, we are better off without their smarmy attitude!

we should have a thread for vermont, while we're at it

Would be a pretty boring...and short, thread.

[sarcasm]

Yeah, I know...I mean the Alamo! The losers. And further, why on earth are those Greek types proud of Thermopylae? I mean...another bunch of losers there too!

Whats up with glorifying a losing effort?!!!! Come on people!!!

[/sarcasm]

And now for some trivia. I had a family ancestor die at the Alamo, but have never been to San Antonio. Hear its a beautiful city and would like to visit it one day.

Where in Texas did you live? You know Texas is a pretty diverse place.

Sorry your Texan girlfriend dumped you though :(

You should make it there before we build a wall along our non-Southern borders in order to keep filthy Americans out. I'd recommend staying at the Menger which is a historic hotel a short walk from both the Alamo and the Riverwalk.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have heard a lot about the park and river walk there. Look forward to it.
