WTP 4.1 Multiplayer how to?

Trying to play WTP 4.1 on steam w a friend
we are both running in steam as original release unsupported

From there not sure how to get together in a game, seems like we cannot direct IP and we cannot LAN game, can't seem to see the game to join
Should we get something like Hamachi and then direct IP?

Need some guidance on how people do this, and please explain it like i'm a 5 year old TY!

Setting up port forwarding in the router is a nightmare, so people tend to use Hamachi instead. You should use direct IP as the internet mode no longer works (gamespy shut down the server).

we used Hamachi and Direct IP
got multiplayer going without much issues, we get OOS or crash about once every 2+ hours, sometimes when we ignore the OOS it just goes away

Setting up port forwarding in the router is a nightmare

For ne it was quite easy, get in the router ip, go to port forward, add the 2056 port to TCP and UDP and that's it.
