WW2-Global

As a committed player of the Germans I rarely venture into the Pacific arena until late in the game. Usually it is once the Soviets and Africa are quelled. I did have one game where I took out the Dutch East Indies and gifted it to the Japanese. The latest beta version at Diety level actually has my Jap allies doing so well I don't need to help them. Amphib assaults backed up by 30 Yamatos securing the Pacific seem to mean they don't need my help. I do think that once the tech resource trade is activated in 2.1 they will benefit even further.
Anyway it got me to musing on the modern transport graphic. From when I first started playing vanilla Civ3 I could never really work out what it was meant to be. A hybrid landing craft circa 1944? A barge with a funny horn on the top? And don't start me on the bizarre noise it makes when on the move! Anyway has anyone ever seen a decent Liberty ship or modern merchant ship unit out there? This scenario is too good to have some weird unit sailing the seas when everything else looks so good.
On the topic of scenario builder/editor for CivIV...
Really good scenarios for Civ3 didn't really start showing up for quite some time after release. To my mind the really top notch ones didn't appear until C3C was released. And of course the best one (this one!) was quite a few years down the track from the release of vanilla C3. Using this timeline as an example and knowing that CivIV is more complex and less user friendly I really am not worried if we don't see quality scenarios showing up for another 12 months or even more. Patience is the key. I am happy to let others figure out how to deal with the difficulties. I believe that we won't really see the quality scenarios until early 2007. That is fine. Quality is better than quantity.

I batman,

"Yes, I have been looking at the U.S. civil war scenario as a basis.
To give some persepective, that is a really small, simple scenario, and the key Python script that runs that scenario is over 1600 lines long."
I batman

What you mention above explain why there a huge number of CIV IV
modpacks but only a few scenarios presented at CFC.

"A script to run create something like WWII-Global, I shudder to think how big it would be.
And that does not even take into account the XML files that define the units.
Now, Paasky is currently working on his WWII scenario, and that should prove interesting when it is done. I would like to see that script when it is done."
I batman

Agree.

"I am also hoping to get a full report out for the Japanese position sometime next week.
In short, a Japanese house rule victory is a nightmare with 1.8, and I imagine will get tougher in 2.1.
Occupying Asian mainland, including India and all of China is very easy.
But, by the time you can start gathering forces for a move on Australia, the Germans start something with the Russians, and you are forced to fight a three front war:
1.The Middle East/India border with the Brits
2. An extended front with the Russians.
3. Pacific naval and amphibious war.

I am tempted to try to reverse the order of attack. Maybe taking the Pacfic islands and Australia first is the way to go. Then wipe out China, India, and then take on the U.S. mainland.

In short, a ton of fun, and very difficult, which is exactly what it should be."
I batman

Yes I sometimes think about the strategic nightmare the Japanese
leadership placed itself in.
I mean the forces that were available to achieve all the goals were
not large!
Probably they thought Soviet would face a total collapse December 1941.

Looking forward to read your report on Japan.

Sasebo,

"I built a line of defense running south from the NE port city straight south, with a group like a BB for the base, couple CA and subs for the offense, and DDs for scouting each turn withing a turn of reinforcing each other--about 5 squares apart. With a BB on defense and in a big stack like that, the US rarely challenges you, and their ships filter past your lines, letting you pick them off. With advance scouting like that, and a CV group or two also manning the lines, no US transport should ever be able to get close enough to land troops short of having half a dozen BB escorts."
Sasebo

Sounds like a very good strategy.

"You don't really need to fight Russia either. So long as you get roads up all through Manchuria, and link the cities by railways, plus destroy the Soviet road nets next to your borders. As soon as their ground forces get out of range of their own cities you can crush them with air attacks alone, or with limited ground forces if you wish. If you play a couple fronts defensively like that, you should have plenty of troops to maintain your offensives elsewhere."
Sasebo

It seems like Soviet-AI seldom attack Japan.
Its strange but realistic.

"Just talking about it makes me want to play Japan again. I'm still calling dibs on Italy first when Rocoteh finishes 2.1. Anyone planning on trying UK? I have not read many reports on them in the last few versions, and I've never played them myself since I thought it would be too easy, but if Japan has a lot of options as to where to concentrate, then UK is just swimming in them. Great troops, but they are just all over the place!"
Sasebo

Playing UK in version 2.1 will not be easy I think.

I agree!

Given I make a graphic update, this shall have first priority.

Thank you.
Procifica and I made The American Civil War scenario for CIV III.
I remember that the release of Conquests meant many ways to improve
that scenario.
For example you could not turn off culture-flipping in CIV III.
Thus you could win at Bull Run, just to see your victorious army
"converted by culture"!

Hornblower

Yes that is right.
Hopefully also follow-up releases from Firaxis will mean improvements
of CIV IV.

There were a few things I was wondering about these mods -

1) any mention/use of units such as the LRDG or the SOE?

2) Future technologies? I'd imagine that you'd include the first jet planes but what about some of the odder technology being developed? Flying wings etc?

shaka01,

1 Edit: Read Post 4589.

2 Odd tech. Given it is reasonable to assume that the related unit
for some reason could have been produced in enough quantity,
it could have a place in a version after 2.1 (should there be one).

Rocoteh

SOE - special operations executive - famously at Bletchly Park, but did a lot more. Organised the resistance.

LRDG - eventually became the SAS (I think after war, but maybe during it) Long Range Desert Group.

shaka01,

OK, I misread your post.

Given the scale and scope of this scenario its hard to find a place
for such units.
Should work better on the operational level.

I am a bit dense when it comes to these things...does the new pedia work with all versions? or should I wait until you are finished 2.1 to download this Rocoteh?

Sasebo,

I know that the Civilopedia will work with version 2.0.

I just installed the new Civlopedia into the 1.8Beta "huge map" and it works just fine. I haven't explored it fully yet but I can already see some of the necessary improvements.
Well done Saulosi!

I have continued with the test of the Germans on Diety V1.8Beta.
The Soviets are running rampant but wisely avoiding conflict with the Axis.
In mid 1941 a short border war sparked by a Japanese/Soviet rivalry saw me take the crucial encroaching Soviet cities along the old Polish border. The Soviet OOB was impressive
T34 - 131
KV1 - 84
Mot Inf - 491
Even so, once I took the cities in the bulge (Lwow, Kiev, Odessa, Sebasapol etc.) they begged for peace. The Germans had only 200 PzIIIg's but I suppose that scared them enough. The war only lasted 5 turns before they sued for peace with the Japs. They managed to almost wipe out the Finns though.
It is now wk 19 of 1942 and the Soviets have had intermittent war with the allies for 3 years. The outcome is that most of North Africa has been raised. The crucial port of Suez is now rubble which annoys me a little. The Soviet OOB is now:
T34-241
KV1-158
Soviet tank div-44
mot rifle div 1941-63
mot rifle div 1939-442
Soviet HMG-334
soviet guards inf-104

Massive!
The Germans have
PzIIIG-200
Panther-25
German HQ Artillery-48
Heavy Artillery-48
Stukas-48
German Inf-334
To head off the Soviet threat to the south 25 PzIIIgs have just commenced operations in north Africa with the intention of taking the french colonies before the Soviets destroy them.
Turkey has fallen to the Soviets with very light losses on their part.
Scandanavia has collapsed to a German attack by 25 PzIIIg's of the Nord Division. Because the Finns were restricted to only 2 cities I shall rehabilitate the captured Norwegian and Swedish cities and gift them to Finland. 50 PzIIIgs are stationed near Murmansk ready to recapture Soviet occupied Finland and drive on Leningrad when the soviets make the mistake of attacking again.

Hornblower,

Thank you for the report.

Yes that is an gigantic force!

That is also an impressing force. Hopefully it will be enough to
defeat Soviet-AI.

A very interesting situation!

My work with version 2.1 continues with the goal to remove bugs
that still remain.
A very large number of wonders have been placed to stop AI
from razing cities.
2.1 will be completed and released within 10 days from now.

Roc,

I have noticed in the 1.8Beta that when the Germans trade with other nations they have two separate Wines luxuries to offer. One of them is definitely the plentiful grape luxury so prevalent throughout Europe. (I have 20 surplus) The second luxury that is labled Wines I haven't been able to figure out. It is much less common (I have 3 surplus). The AI is willing to pay 4 times the amount of the regular wines luxury. Any idea what it might be?

Hornblower,

The "second wine" is worth 100% more in commerce.

Also: The max limit for buildings/wonders have been reached.
Thus no more cities can be protected.

Hello Rocoteh:

I promised you a Japan update, which I will try to get out by Friday or Saturday.
One thing I have noted is the US have a tendency to send out unescorted transports towards Japan. Can they be flagged to always be escorted, like a carrier?
I had a look at an old turn I had played, and the US AI had sent out 3 tranports, all in separate missions, and only one of them was escorted, by a single Battleship C2.

Naturally, all were dispatched easily by a combination of bombers and Yamota's.

Looking forward to read the Japan update.

On the transport issue:

Yes it should be possible. I will look over the problem.

IarnGreiper,

Merry Christmas.

Thank you for the important playtesting you have done
with new version of WW2-Global.

I will upload version 2.1 within some hours from now.
