I don't think Windows XP has BIOS, so it might not help me there.

How does one identify a motherboard?

BIOS (Basic Input/Output Setup) lies entirely on your motherboard. Operating Systems run from your hard drive (or other drives). They are pretty much mutually exclusive.

That said, there is probably some key that you have to press (probably [DEL], [ESC], or [F1]) as you turn o the computer to get there.

To identify the MB ...

1. If you built your PC up like I did (which is probably not the case here), you either already know or can check the receipt

2. If you bought your PC from some major vendor, then you can use their website to find out the details and download drivers/firmwares

3. If you bought from a small vendor, either open it up and guess or use some benchmarking utility to find out:

Also, the name of the motherboard should come up when your computer boots up, on that black screen with white letters that flashes by after about 2 seconds before Windows starts loading.

Not much use I guess if you don't know what your looking for, though :p

You can open up your computer and look inside - or is that too low tech an approach?
