Is there any particular reason you didn't put Online speed in the poll?

Never played online and didn't know it was a speed setting. Is it a fast speed?

Haha, indeed. Maybe checking all the options before posting the poll is a good idea. I think without "online" added you can't really trust the results. Especially in multiplayer, online is a godsend.
  • Online – double-speed used for online multiplayer.
  • Quick – 33% faster.
  • Standard – Normal speed game.
  • Prolonged – 50% slower.
  • Marathon – 200% slower.

For me, the speed alternates depending on my mood and expected playtime over the next couple of weeks/months. Sometimes I use a mod that changes the speed, sometimes I like to knock out a game within a day and play "online" or "quick" speeds.

I always tie speed to map size when I play:
Duel - online
Tiny or small - quick
Standard or large - normal
Huge - epic

Otherwise, since movement points are static, the time to traverse the map is out of whack.

This ^ 100%
Large map + normal speed - a few civs and - a few city-states.

I play on Marathon with Huge maps because I want a deep intense experience. I'd use the word epic, but that is another setting lol. I like to start and finish a decent war without having upgraded most my units while it's going on :D

I love this game but how can anyone endure the late game at epic or marathon speed and with huge maps?! All you're doing is clicking next turn and then waiting for 5 minutes for the next turn to load!

I usually play online speed, partly because I can actually finish some games and try different things and partly because I want to be competitive online against friends, so I prefer to practice at the same settings in order to get some idea of benchmarks I should be aiming for.

Marathon. The late game is terribly boring with an uncompetitive AI, so I like to savor the slower pace of pre-industrial eras. Typically quit as soon as victory (Or loss) is inevitable.

I’d love to try historic speed but sadly it isn’t available to me.

Stuck in epic speed, always feel rushed through the ages in standard speed. I've developed a habit of having at least 2 games on the go at all times, one in early stages (pre-snowball), and one in late stage. So any game I actually care to "finish" gets played in the evenings when the TV is on or when I'm cooking so I have lots to do in between turns. When it's just me and my coffee in the early hours of the weekend is when I start new games or play the mid-era games that require focus and good planning.

I'm in no hurry to get a huge list of victories so mostly I just like getting a civ to snowball (not always successful) on a pretty map have the odd fun military campaign and only sometimes take a civ all the way to a victory. So epic doesn't seem like much more of a grind since I only grind out the interesting games ;)

in civ VI its normal only for me. some victories are tedious by the end game even on normal already.
but faster games are too fast early. i really enjoy early game exploration, finding natural wonders, mapping coastline, meeting states and civs. on fast speed its not good experience.

Really depends on how you end up playing. I'm never ever in the situation where I just click next turn. I have late-game pillage wars, mass migrations of workers, Eurekah and Inspiration fiddling, policy card switching, rushbuying with faith and gold, sending my governors around, calculating my overflow and my chop capacities, trading with AI, bribing them into wars, upgrading units, scouting for future Eurekahs, managing city (specialist) tiles and growth, managing Great People and much more. Basically, around 40 turns before I expect to win I go really in-depth and every turn takes forever, probably around 10-15 minutes.

The late game is still relatively boring because there is generally only one way to win science, and only one or two ways to win culture/diplo. So there is a lot of repetition. But I'd argue if you simply end up clicking "next turn" in most of your lategame turns, you are missing out on a lot of mechanics the game doesn't tell you to do. There are no reminders for your governors or your rushbuys, and that's okay with me. Some things the game should expect me to do by myself.

Obviously how powerful your computer is will play a role. At any point where I'm getting bored in the last game in 6 I remind myself that I would have experienced the same thing from far earlier in 5!! :p

Quick is just too quick for me (never tried online), usually standard is good, but if I'm looking for a longer game or sprawling out on a huge map, I'll go for epic or, very occasionally, marathon.
