Youths in Europe

As long as the French government is giving out free pie, why not grab a piece? ;) I would. Doesn't mean I'd support my government spending my money that way, but if other governments are going to, then you might as well get what you can.
I'll keep that in mind the next time you call Al Gore a hypocrite for flying on a private jet.

I'm always amazed by the peopel who I run into who go on about the "welfare state" or how the govt gives away this and that, then come to find out that they've been on disability or they have a govt. job w/ great benefits/retirement or they belong to (of all things) a union or they paid for college on the GI Bill, etc... etc... etc...

For rail travel in (my area/poss all of) Scotland if under 25 you can pay £20 to get a young person's railcard. This entitles you a 1/3rd discount from all railtravel - only really worth it if travelling a lot or over a long distance. You also need photo-id.

ROFL, gotta love it when the welfare state works to your advantage. Then its not so bad, is it? Had no idea you were a welfare queen!

So much for rugged individualism and the open market. - Shane

Huh? This isn't welfare. Welfare queen? I hate to say it, but I'm using the open market to get the best price to do my traveling that I can.

So far as half that other crap, that's not welfare...

Since when is the GI bill welfare. Wow.

It's not comparable at all. We're talking about different countries here. I don't care what France's policies are, but if they're useful then I'll use them there, even if I think that they are bad for France overall, simply because I know I won't be able to change them. Here, though, I would not take advantage of something which I think is wrong, and would try to get it struck down or dismantled. Additionally, Al Gore is a hypocrite not because he uses government funds to fly in private planes - to my knowledge he hasn't lobbied against that - he's a hypocrite because he attacks people for emitting too much CO2, and then unnecessarily emits a whole lot himself by flying on a private plane.

I'm still baffled as to how the GI bill is equated to a welfare queen.

It's actually because students have less disposable income and can't pay full price. Thus the choice is between giving them a discount, and making a small profit, or charging full price, and not making any profit because they don't buy it.

So why don't we get discounts on beer and other important stuff? ;)

Don't make excuses for people who should get off their butts and work.

Wouldn't dream of it. If there is one thing I hate, it is businesses adjusting their price policy so that some people can get away with not paying full price. Businesses have no right to set their own prices!
