1.52 Patch Available

I don't want to read through 31 pages of people attacking eachother, so can someone simply give me a summary of what's happening with 1.52?

I hear ya'. I too have have been disappointed with the turn this thread has taken. Anyways, as per your request, after installing the patch:

1) Some people experience minor problems with graphics, bizarre looking leaderheads, stuttering wonders movies. Also, the Domestic Advisor screen seems to have disappeared for some of these people. But in general, the speed has been improved in the later stages and the game and on large maps.

2) Some people experience major problems, crashes, bacl screens etc, and the game is now utterly unplayable. It should be noted that for these problems and for the graphic problems in the first set, the performance doesn't seem to be due to below-spec systems since everyone who has problems with the patch (myself included) says they have systems at or above the recommended level.

3) Some people (most people?) have absolutely no problems at all with the new patch and say it has enhanced the game performance, and thus their pleasure in playing.

The only constructive recommendation to come out of this string if you experience problems with the patch, if you can't afford a whole new system just to play a game, has been to uninstall the whole game, reinstall it, and reinstall the first patch only. Others suggested this and so I tried it and can now play again.

And if you experience no problems, good on ya'! Enjoy! :)

Peace :king:

PS - I may be stuck with Civ 4, but after all these problems with what is essentially a beta, there is absolutely nothing that will incite me to purchase Civ 5 when it comes out, no matter how many games of the year awards it may win. You listening Firaxis? I doubt you are...

Thanks, I appreciate the summary :)

So-so. It saves more memory than my fix, but at least with my system it swaps more (why?). Also some people have freezing, but later. First emotions about 1.52 are always positiver, later - sometimes same, sometimes bad.

I'm looking for information on patch details, and to be specific I want to know more on the new random map generation modes (for the map types) when you go to customize a game. The previous options (on game launch) included Archipelago, Continents, Custom_Continents, Ice_age, Islands, Lakes, Oasis, Pangaea, and Terra. The new options I see under Map settings for custom map generations are Balanced, Great_Plains, Highlands, Hub, Inland_Sea, Maze, Mirror, Ring, Team_Battleground, Tilted_Axis, and Wheel. Can anyone direct me to where they explained these new map generation modes? Are they even explained anywhere, and if so where do I find them?

I hope I posted in the right place as they were added in the new patch I believe.

I have read a little of what's been posted and apparently people have been having troubles? I would just like to vouch that my machine runs it fine before and after the patch. I have a 64bit duelcore cpu 3800+ (2gHz) and a 7800gtx 256mb vid card ... maybe it's why I'm not having troubles but I don't know because I havn't been follow the posts (there's WAY too many to read LOL!). I thought letting people know it works fine for me might be helpful.

Yeah, after reading 20 of these pages i think people with non-NVidia cards have more troubles.

So the way i see it, the Game is developed with Nvidia code in mind and "patched" to work with other brands too (Ati?). Or they just made a huge mistake while the game-engine was in progess, which cripples the Ati-3D path.

Can be anything. But i really don't think it is ATI's fault, why else can i play ANY other game without difficulty ? And i mean ANY, i have 2000+ Games lying around here. (sure, there are games between them that won't support XP, so i don't count those as that is another problem).

Can anyone tell which Ati-drivers works best ?
I tried both latest official driver, with no succes. also the game crashes (not to desktop, so i need a hard reboot  ) with 1.09 AND 1.52 . Makes no difference to me.

Tips like, don't play large maps, use low res textures, settings are NOT patches, but ordinairy workarounds for a problem there STILL is.

They should FIX things, not tell people how to avoid them!

Just, my 0.02cents

ps: my system is fine:

Athlon XP 2800+
Asus A78NX-X
1 GB Corsair DDR PC3200
Radeon 9800 Pro
3x WD 80GB (plenty of space)
Creative SB Live!

XP is fully patched! (SP2 +++)
Latest Nforce chipset drivers
Latest Catalist Drivers (and i tried the one befor that too!)
SB Live! drivers uptodate, and working flawless with any other game.

Playing games and configuring hardware/OS for 12 years + now, so i know where to look for and i have a good feeling how to "smell" bad code, crappy game-engines.

Apperently, this game is rushed to get it out on the shelf. How can you say MOST users have no difficulties, as i see in the polls 2/3 of them HAVE problems. lighter or heavier, the problems are there.
Afcourse i do not expect Firaxis admits any of it, but what i do expect is that they come with a proper solution. I don't care how they do it, like co-operating with Ati engineers or whatsoever. Just do it!

You've recieved my cash and that of many others, so it would be nice when we can enjoy this game anytime soon. Because up till today, i do not.

Am i pissed? You bet i am :-/

My card's NVIDIA and the game is still effectively unplayable due to random rebooting.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=150637

What's more, when I get the error report on restart it often claims the (unspecified) error was WITH Nvidia.

That's because the instruction that led to the crash was a conflict between the nVidia driver and something else. By default, the nVidia driver gets the blame for the crash by Windows.

I have downloaded the patch 1.52 onto a pen drive at work.

Q. How do I install it onto my PC at home?

Need help now !!!

Thanks in advance

Well, you find the patch at your harddrive (it should be in My Documents\My Games\Civilization 4\Patch folder if you used autoupdater).
Then you copy it at your home computer and run.

hide health bars during combat
Why on Earth didn't they also hide the health / hit points in the left margin when you attack?!? Since they didn't, combat animations are no fun, because you already know the outcome of the battle anyway. Of course you can just choose not to look at it, but I never manage... This spoils a lot of the fun for me! Hoping for a change in the next patch.

Anyone with me?

Apologies if this has been asked before - but if I apply the patch - would I be able to continue a game saved without the patch?

thanks

@Bananafish: I am pretty sure you can't. Sorry. Also, yeah I too think the combat shown near the bottom left corner is kinda cheesy seeing as to how it survived through two patches but then again I have the abiliity unlike so much others to not look:P.

I am 90% of sure you CAN.
As for as I see 1.52 is backward compatile when reading old saves.

I have bunch of them already and it reads them all OK.
Now, since there are some rules chances between patches, something can get a bit messed up from time to time.

For example my old 1.00 1 turn til space race victory saves, loaded with 1.52, would in fact become 3turns til victory saves, since price of space ship parts got increased with patch.

Yah ummm I know I said I wouldn't post any more. But this seemed to fit with this so called company. Firaxis.... yah ummm. Thought you all would enjoy the humor in it.

edit: ummm yah it also has to do with the patch. LOL

1. I live in a rural area. (like those "impassable" tiles in CivIV)
2. So my dial-up connect speed (at best) is a blazing 28800.
3. I've not the courage to attempt downloading 40+ MB's at this speed.
4. I have no friends. (see #1)

so... my question is:

Are there any alternative ways to aquire the patch.

Considering all the problems with the game, would a free updated game disc from Firaxis be asking too much?

Thanx in advance to any responders to my querry.
