1.52 Patch Available

Actually, the best way is to use some of download managers (GetRight, FlashGet, etc...) and then start downloading from one of direct links posted at this site (that supports download managers) before you get to sleep.
It the morning it should be over.
Don't forget to check options for reconnect if disconnected and hang up when done.

Also night download is good, since it makes network more stable, at least for poor dial-up due to lower trafic.

Hope it helps.
It helped me many times.

The problem with dial-up (at least in Russia) is ISP / phone company bills after some big download :) After some 5 patches civ4 might cost $100.

1. I live in a rural area. (like those "impassable" tiles in CivIV)
2. So my dial-up connect speed (at best) is a blazing 28800.
3. I've not the courage to attempt downloading 40+ MB's at this speed.

Maybe you're like the Cowardly Lion in Oz, and you just need a medal to give you some courage. Downloading 40 MB at 28800 bps is only a few hours. If it gets interrupted, you can use any of several download managers to resume where you left off. It doesn't seem like a big deal, to me.

4. I have no friends. (see #1)

so... my question is:

Are there any alternative ways to aquire the patch.

Considering all the problems with the game, would a free updated game disc from Firaxis be asking too much?

Thanx in advance to any responders to my querry.

Surely some kind Civ 4 fanatic in the US will take pity on you and save the patch on to a cd and post it to you. (Assuming that you have a postal service in your isolated rural area!) I did the same thing for my brother over here, admittedly he was my brother but it really didn't cost that much. Will no-one on your side of the Atlantic take pity on you? :)

This patch seemed not to bring any new problems. But the unit stack bug is still there for me at least: when selecting a largish stack it's icon might suddenly stard wandering in 'southwest' but the now invisible troops are still there and available for actions as usual.

Having Radeon 9600 XT 128 MB.

But that's not an usual and dangerous problem and I'm happy with the patch!

I have met this bug too several times. Freaked me out the first time!

I got athlon xp 3000+
1gb ddr pc3200 ram
sb live sound card
xp home sp2 + updates

and my graphics card is radeon 9600 pro 256mb onboard ram catalist 5.13 and after my first update ( v1.09 ) i havn't had a problem playing now playing v1.52 still no problems playing even on both monitors game works fine but it would still be nice to buy a game that works without having to patch it i feel sorry for all those who have bought the game without having internet access

Well, i finally found a solution. Since the latest two ATI Catalist Driver releases didn't work for me i tried my luck with Omega's ATI drivers.

ps: It's very well possible that this issue don't happen with the 9600 Pro, but only with other models (like my 9800 Pro). Different cards, different 3D features; they are not the same!

Bingo! All of a sudden ALL version's of CIV4 work :crazyeye:
Never had a CTD anymore!

So for anyone who experiences the same issue's with a Radeon card i would say: Please try the Omega's Drivers.

Yes, I can click past that and continue.

I did not try lowering my graphics settings. Maybe I should do that. "High" worked fine on 1.09, but.... I'll test and report back.

The installation did download successfully, yes.

I actually went ahead and tested before posting. Lowering my graphics to "Low" solved the problem. I can now at least play.

Thanks for the help!

After installing new patch, everything looks ok. When running the game, it crashes and gives me an error message about not enough video memory (didnt have that problem with old patch). I have a radeon 7500(32mb) video card, what exactly do I need to do to lover my video settings. Thank you.

I went to the ATI website and they give me a so many drivers to choose from when I click the Windows XP option. Which driver do I download so that I can play Civ!! (I have a Sony Viao)

Great game, loving it, definitely the best version of Civ yet.

But for a while there I was getting fairly frequent CTD (crash to desktop) even with the v1.52 patch. Some games more than others, but at least several times each game.

But I managed to fix this problem by going back to the older v4.12 ATI drivers for my Radeon 9600 graphics card (suggested on the forums - can't remember which one). Now I haven't had a CTD for a while. These drivers are available from ATI.

Before this, I tried ALLof the following, one by one and in various combinations, without success:
- Latest drivers and updates all round.
- Turning off AGP.
- The "Omega" drivers for my ATI card instead of ATI's drivers.
- Reduced graphics settings.
- Playing in windowed mode.
- Shutting down all other processes before starting the game.
- Small maps.
- "Flat" maps without wrap-around.
- Various other things suggested on the forums.

Not sure why you would download an ATI driver... It is dependent on your graphics card.

I also have a sony Vaio. I have the Nvidea Geforce GO 6400 and I did not need to alter my drivers for it.
You should be OK.
I am guessing you have that or the Intel 128Mb card. That one should be OK too.

I am still waiting for the reduced movies that are promised as a seperate download. Did I miss them????? Or aren't they available yet.

Some movie problems are fixed in the next patch (in testing now). The reduced movies will probably not be released until after the next patch, so that people can first try the new patch before replacing their movies.

Thanks for the news thamer.

I hope you include a city icon for airport in this next patch. ;)

BTW, I've played for England recent 'random' game. The game suggested "Londonb" (notice last 'b') as the name for capital. A minor mistyping I guess...

I think you just pressed the "b" button twice while you only needed to once. So the second one got added to the city name

- Created a set of low-res movies for machines without dynamic texture support (this is a separate download)

How do you download that???

This is no a major bug.. but since i installe 1.52 patch.. my starting cities have an extra "b" at the end. IE: Londonb, Parisb, etc...

I checked the XML's and the city names appear coorect in there..

Any idea why?
