1.52 Patch Available

New patch does not resolve CTDs. Matter or fact they're worse.

I Uninstalled completely then reinstalled. I could not get the Automatic Update function to work until I installed v1.09 and then set it to windowed mode. At that point, I did an automatic update, which did work fine, but once I had the v1.52 installed, no games will initiate. All I get is a White Box stating Runtime Error.

This is worse than the original vanilla version. At least it loaded a game occasionally and then, CTDed. Up until now, Hark's patch w/v1.09 seemed to be doing the trick for me, but the documentation stated not to use "unofficial" patches. Well, for me the "UNOFFICIAL" patch works better than the "OFFICIAL" crap patch.

I'm gonna try reinstalling thru v1.09, installing Hark's patch, then Auto-updating over the combination of the two of them, to see if that works for me.

Okay, tried reinstalling thru v1.09, then Hark's patch, then auto-updating over the combination of the two of them (just to see if it works). No Way...
NaDA... Patch1.52 is a waste of time for me... It's back to reinstall from scratch to v1.09 and then Hark's patch... THE Only "UnOFFICIAL" patch that actually works...

I'm wondering if the cheapskates at Firaxis, thought they could reverse engineer Hark's patch and then tell everyone that unofficial patches would interfere with their "official" patch... Kinda ironic that their patch is the one that doesn't work...

They seem to have added civilopedia links in certain pages - maybe civics, and others.
I'm missing the East Asia mod somehow.
I'm quite happy with this new patch. Things are running a lot smoother. Bink hasn't improved (actually it has gotten worse from 1.00->1.09). There are some interface quirks that I wish they'd fix but they haven't.

Hmmm...that sucks that some people are having issues that weren't before. For me, the patch works beautifully. Loading up a standard sized map in the modern era now runs as smooth as Civ3 ever did, with high graphics and my music playing in the background. Hopefully the rest of you will get it worked out soon. I updated all the windows patches and restarted before patching, might give that a shot. At the very worst, uninstall, then reinstall.

I also had Harkonnen's "mod" (lol) installed. I didn't have to jack with it at all. Many thanks to Hark for making the game playable while Firaxis got their stuff together.

The one thing I don't understand is the marathon speed...or epic, for that matter. Making everything take two or three times as long to build does nothing for the game but draw it out. My god, it takes HOW long to build a settler? 200 hammers, haha. 190 for a barracks.

I may be completely off here, but I'm assuming most players want to spend longer in each age playing with their new toys, not building them. Increased techs and more turns are good things, but making it take ages to build anything just means more "enter, enter, enter, enter...).

The problem with normal speed is that some things are obsolete before you had a chance to play with them, unless you have a tech lead. Epic/Marathon don't fix this issue, because it just takes a heck of a lot longer to build anything.

Interesting, that Emancipation is now Low Upkeep and Free Speech is now low upkeep. I use both these.
Before patching +26 gold per turn. After patch -52 per turn. Could anyone tell me where all my cash has gone? The cost of something somewhere has sky-rocketed. I think it must be inflation, must have sneaked in a change to the calculation.

Other than that, patch works but everything seems alittle dulled out. Not as bright and colourful as it was before, guess it's the new textures. But happy to accept that for a faster running late-game. Great idea to change the Civiopedia, couldn't find anything with all those icons.

Looks like they've ripped off Hark's patch too....

Did anyone else catch the line in the patch notes about units now using their MAX strength in combat in lieu of their current one??? I haven't played yet, but if that is true, that is by far the biggest gameplay change.

And to be honest.
This is the only thing out of the whole list of fixes in the readme, I don´t like.

I liked it that a damaged unit wouldn´t do the full damage it does when it´s undamaged, as damage would also mean a loss of weapons/soldiers (and therefore firepower) and IMHO there was no reason to change the current system as it worked well.

But aside from this one, the list looks great. :)
Good that I finished my last game just yesterday, so that I can try the patch with a new game later this day

I had the same problem. Civics seem to be more expensive across the board. Did everyone cacnel their trade deals with you? For some reason, running my 1.09 save game under 1.52 resulted in me losing the ability to engage in coastal trade. All the other nations cancelled my trade deals, Hinduism is no longer spreading, and my once healthy trade routes are restricted to my and one other civ I have road connetcions too.

Just wondering why I am no longer able to trade with everyone on my continent, despite my galleys mapping the coast. Anyone else have this problem? Does it go away if you start a new game? I have both Compass and Optics. I've also used paper to get maps of the whole continent, and despite seeing some civs, I have no contact with them. They used to just pop up if I traded for world maps that displayed their territory.

That being said, the game runs much faster and much more smoothly. I hope this is just a save game incompatability.

So far not impressed...

I now get a popup when quicksaving (shift-f5)telling me I am going to overwrite the file. I click ok(oddly no cancel :p) and instant crash to desktop.

This popup didn't happen in 1.09 so it's a new feature that I can't seem to find anywhere in the options or in the .ini file to disable it.

Again the same error wrrr
"Error 1706. No valid source be found for product Sid Meier Civilization 4. The windows installer cannot continue."
but patch is working ( probably ).
You are having this error during install patch 1.09 and 1.52 ? and patch later working fine?

Anyone got a direct link to this patch around the net, I can't find it at all, and that check for updates button says there are none available. So any other link, considering there isn't one anywhere.

Well, the new patch works up thru Large Scenarios for me, whereas Hark's patch allowed me to load up "Huge" scenarios. That tells me that Firaxis's "Official" patch probably releases in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 Mbytes Less memory, than Hark's patch.

Must be the civic costs then. I'm currently in a late-game stage, upto Plastics. No deals have been cancelled, maintence costs seem the same as they were and the foriegn trade routes remain unchanged with Open Borders across Oceans and coasts. Currently the civics are Suffage, Free Speech, Emancipation, State Property and Free Religion. Suffage is medium cost. State Property is none. Emanciption is none according to the manual but not the XML file, it's low. Might have been changed in the previous patch, I don't know. All costs 81 gold per turn. It seems excessively high to me now even with the reductions through the new patch, only had the tax rate on 10% guess I'll have to raise it now.

I'm actually pretty upset that the "cheat mode" is no longer available. I like to experiment in game every so often by giving a smaller civ some cash and see what they do with it. PLus sometimes after a hard day of work, I just want to destroy everyone on the face of the planet. I guess I wont be installing this patch until a cheat option comes out.

Does anybody know if the scoring has been fixed? It would be nice to know that if you've built up a massively powerful empire, perhaps even won the game on a Time victory or Culture Victory, that you rate higher than a Dan Quayle!

edit: Ok, it looks like they have done something to change the scoring as now land doesn't count toward your final score until you have had control of it for 20 turns. I suspect this won't solve the scoring problem....

reedit: I have to admit, I'm a bit wary of loading this patch up. The game runs fine for me, even on huge maps. The graphics are wonderful. The only problem I have is the wonder movies stuttering. Since my graphics card has only 64 Mb, I really don't won't to dumb down the graphics as they are great right now, with no bugs. (If it isn't broken, I'm not particularly interested in 'fixing' it.) I'll wait for some more feedback. It would be nice if I could just install the parts of the patch that only apply to the Wonder movies.

I didn't read through the whole thread, but this problem has probably been mentioned already: after patching, I can load the game fine, but when I try to start a new game (standard map), the game goes to desktop and displays the error "Your system has run out of video memory!" :(

Never seen that before, I could play all maps (although huge map was always SLOW). Anyone have a fix for this yet?

Perhaps I could try this memorysaver option, will see if it helps...

EDIT: changed MemSaver = 1 in the .ini file, but it didn't change the problem. I might try to change graphics settings to low, but thats stupid...I could play with all settings on high before, a patch shouldn't force me to turn them lower :(

Another update: Setting graphis to "medium" levels allows me to play again. I'm still rather unhappy, why could I play with high settings before (even if it wasn't great on larger maps), but now with the "improved" version I cannot play with high settings anymore at all? ...
