1.52 Patch Available

The only way to find out is to apply the patch. :) If you still have black terrain after that, chance is you would need to upgrade your graphcis card. Also, upgrade your graphics card driver if you haven't already.

Thurderfall, I'm not personally attacking you...

But doesn't it seem a bit crazy to expect people to HAVE to upgrade their graphics cards beyond what the devs already specified for this game? When are the devs going to realize that they have to write cleaner software and that simply requiring the user to upgrade to cover their mistakes is going to turn off more people than it will bring in? People are having issues with the Geforce 6xxx cards, the second most powerful card line that Nvidia has released to date. There is no way I, and others, can rationalize buying a $300 Geforce 7xxx card just to play this game.

Computer hardware development has hit a bit of a road block with the 4.0ghz archetecture and the gaming industry needs to realize that it is now more important to make clean, efficient games because the cutting edge isn't much faster and costs way to much.

Well, if someone still has black terrain problem after the patch, he/she likely has a card that doesn't support shaders and T&L, and should upgrade. People who have GeForce 6600 or 6800 obviously are not expected to upgrade to 7xxx series. I am not.

I used to have a GeForce MX400 and I had black terrain problem too. So I bought GeForce 6800 a few months ago, which can play Civ4 OK on low and medium graphics, but has problem on high graphics settings. It's a strange problem. I suspect it could be due to my power supply unit not having enough power (350W), and have just ordered a 430W PSU today.

Currently my laptop with a GeForce Go 6200 card can play Civ4 much better than my desktop with GeForce 6800.

Aside from the leaderheads which sometimes look a little bit strange (for example Hatschepsut sometimes looks like she uses too much makeup for her cheeks :D ) the patch works fine for me (and occasional strange looking leaderheads where already present before, so I´d thing it´s rather "no change" by the patch and not "the patch made it worse" )
Started a Marathon game the day the patch came out and I´m still busy playing it (now at the year 1806).
The introduction of the marathon speed is something which really enhances the fun in the game, especially as you are able to wage long wars without having the units you started the war with outdated (started to attack Elisabeth some time after I got cossacks, when I ended the war maybe 100-150 turns (200-300 years game time) later [with the destruction of the english empire] cossacks where still the most important unit type within my armies [the only difference being, that at the beginning they fought against pre gunpowder units and at the end of the war against grenadiers]). It´s also great that GAs last longer with marathon (15 turns), but sadly revolutions, too (3 turns for changing one civic seem to be rather normal in my game) making the "spiritual" trait more interesting than before ;)

This patch was one of the best Christmas gifts I got this year. Coupled with the 1GB of RAM I got for my PC (bringing my memory from 512MB to 1.5GB!) CIV now runs incredibly smooth, rarely chunks up when the map is fully revealed (on a large map, at least -- haven't tried huge yet), and then there are the new customization options, including the new Marathon speed setting!

I've had absolutely no problems with the game since updating to 1.52. Thank you Firaxis, you've made my year!

Merry Christmas everyone! Now I get back to CIV-ing! :xmascheers:

No, it's not makeup.
It's skin disease!

New to 1.52 as I mentioned few posts above.
(was probelm in 1.00/1.09 but only in civilization selection screen)

I have had 3 crashes since I installed 1.52 an hour ago. First I upgraded my drivers to 81.93 (the latest one according to this site), then I installed from 1.09 to 1.52.

I chose a small game with Victoria. I couldn't get to 'in the beginning'. Hard reset...

Then I chose another small game. When I met my 3rd civ, civ crashed. I had to reset hard again.

Then I chose another small game. When I popped a goodie hut, it crashed again.

How am I supposed to enjoy a game when I can crash at any time?

Please fix the multiplayer. It's probably easyer to hack into the Penatgon than joining a multiplayer game.

I'm running a GeForce 5500 @ 128M. It runs great. However, I'm also getting the eye-popping diplo screen. Also, the diplo screen loads very slowly. Any way to tone that down? I run the game on "medium" for all graphics.

Hark's Patch, Do we need to remove it or what? I am getting frequent crashes since 1.52 update.

I've had nothing but problems ever since I installed this new patch. The loading screen pops up, the CD spins, then nothing. I've tried uninstalling it, reinstalling it, re-downloading the patch, scanning for viruses, running ad-aware, clearing the registry, installing it on a different hard drive....nothing works. I also haven't been able to run any of my other games on my computer either...I already made a post here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=134027&page=2
but just fyi...if you have any ideas please let me know

I'm trying to update to patch v1.52 from v1.00 but got this error while patching:

Error 1706. No valid source code could be found for product Sid Meier's Civilization 4. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

I found a brief discussion about this on Apolyton but there was no solution. I tried searching here manually and via Google but didn't find anything with a solution.

In the instructions for the new patch it says....
In addition, a new config file (ini) option called 'MemorySaver' has been added for further memory reduction, at the cost of alt-tabbing support. If you set MemorySaver=1 in the config file, you can lower your system memory usage by 70% of video memory. So if you have a 128MB video card, you can save an additional ~90MB of system memory.
I have looked in my .ini and I can not find where this is.
Has anyone else has this problem, or am I overlooking something obovious.

Any help would be great!!

The Amazing Arrington Bros....

PS....Nevermind, I found it....BTW the game is running better than before. Hark's patch was great, but now I can run in any resolution, any size map and it is working great....so far.

Mostly this seems to affect people who bought the game online, rather than on CD. The online version of the game can't be updated with the standard patch; you need to wait for them to come out with the online patch, which takes days, at least, after the main release. This is a big (unadvertised) disadvantage of buying online.

Good patch!

Now I'm only waiting for:

- Reduced forrest chop yield by a large amount (yeah it can be edited, but the AI wouldn't know it)
- Zoom to city at growth to redistribute tiles, since the autofeature is kind of bad.
- Goto accept click. The goto is broken right now and doesn't count the shortest path, and I've lost cities because of this.

Well, I've just tried 'SyncInput = 1' - same thing about movies, and same continuous rendering in background.

Probably you have to start the game at least once to make it update its .ini file. Some time ago I could not find another settings like 'DynamicAnimPaging'.

Note that with 'MemSaver=1' you won't be able to switch game resolution and/or AA setting.

My fix gets uninstalled by 1.52 installer (zlib1.dll is replaced by original, and python24.dll too for those who used the very first version).
