(CNSNews.com) - The lengthy Democratic primary contest bodes well for Republican chances of holding the White House, a new poll suggests.

As Democratic Senators Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York slug it out for the nomination, many of their supporters -- at least in Pennsylvania, site of the next major primary -- aren't committed to the party's ticket in November, according to a Franklin & Marshall College Poll.

Among Obama supporters, 20 percent said they would vote for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee, if Clinton beats their candidate for the nomination. Among Clinton supporters, 19 percent said they would support McCain in November if Obama is the Democratic nominee. (See poll)

The only real reason I bring this up is that it alludes to something some of us were saying in some threads a few months ago. That is, exactly how long is the Obama/Clinton war going to wage, and how bitter are the losers going to be?

Some months ago, I made the premise that the followers of the losing democrat nominee could be so turned off by the democrat knife fight for the nomination, they could very well cross the aisle if the republican candidate were moderate enough. Well, the republicans did end up with a moderate candidate, and the democrat electoral ThunderDome continues.

Bottom line, I think there is a good chance this might actually happen. What say you?

McCain WILL be the next President. That has already been decided.

I'll vote for McCain over Hillary.

I'll vote for McCain over Obama.

Obama isn't the only who's looked good to independants and swing voters. Aside from his warkhawk tendencies, McCain is miles away in front of most Republicans I've seen in my lifetime. Probably why angry conservatives don't like him.

There will be some sort of reconciliation. 1/5 seems about right now, but I'm sceptical about it staying that high. Though, without a doubt, I am in that 20%

It's still March, and usually around 15% of party members cross over to the other party for Presidential elections (at least that's around what it was in 2000 and 2004).

20% overall, but what are the percentages for each side?

Yeah, and he's got anti-war voters in his pocket, too.

Not to mention the whopping 69% of Americans who don't approve of President Bush.

I aint voting for McCain. He's way too conservative and is willing to extend the failed policies by Bush.

McCain's natural youthfulness is sure to attract the young voters.
Well he aint going to attract me. Way too conservative and is an extention of the failed policies of Bush.

I bet if he challenged Barack or Hillary to Mortal Kombat, he'd beat the crap out of both of them.
Nope, neather would. Chuck Noris would beat all three of em!!

I am going to hit myself for uttering a Chuck Noris Meme :cringe:.

Wait, so not only are you declaring a single state poll to be indicative of some sort of national trend, you're also apparently assuming that the elections will be held the same day as the primary? Things change after the general election campaign.

McCain WILL be the next President. That has already been decided.

I must have missed the memo; has Diebold leaked their results early or something?

I bet if he challenged Barack or Hillary to Mortal Kombat, he'd beat the crap out of both of them.

Gosh, I'd never thought of that. Guess I'll have to change my vote now.
