10 Greatest bands in the world list by time magazine

And Our Winners Are...
A good band is hard to find. So some of TIME's writers listened to groups from around the world to create a definitive, highly opinionated, probably inflammatory list of the top contemporary acts outside the U.S. Below are the 10 best bands on planet Earth.
BY RHETT BUTLER

Radiohead, BRITAIN
Hailing from Oxford, this art-rock quintet spins futuristic songs about the disillusioned and the disoriented, about aliens and creeps—but often with a glimmer of hope. Key albums: OK Computer, Kid A

U2, IRELAND
Two decades after it first formed, the Dublin-based band still hasn't found what it's looking for. It has remained inventive, hungry and committed to social causes. Key albums: The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree and All That You Can't Leave Behind

Aterciopelados, COLOMBIA
Singer Andrea Echeverri and guitarist/producer Hector Buitrago blend alt-rock, electronica and Colombian folk. Key albums: Gozo Poderoso, Caribe Atomico

Brilliant Green, JAPAN
A rock-'n'-roll trio—singer Tomoko Kawase and guitarists Shunsaku Okuda and Ryo Matsui—that creates ambiguously playful music. Key album: Los Angeles

Sigur Ros, ICELAND
The land of Bjork has produced several notable acts lately, including Emiliana Torrini and Mum. Sigur Ros, with its intoxicatingly eclectic sound, is winning fans worldwide. Key album: Agaetis Byrjun

Portishead, BRITAIN
Atmospheric, surreal trip-hop music; Geoff Barrow produces, and vocalist Beth Gibbons' hollow voice haunts every track. These songs pull listeners two ways: they make you want to dance and to despair. Key album: Dummy

Tarika, MADAGASCAR
An upbeat fusion of energetic percussion, traditional instrumentation and socially conscious lyrics. Nearly every song sounds like a celebration of the spirit. Key albums: Soul Makassar, D

Pato Fu, BRAZIL
Pop rock with a sense of humor and a charge of electronica. Key album: Televisao De Cachorro

Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, JAMAICA
Ziggy, Stephen, Sharon and Cedella are keeping reggae's (and their father Bob's) positivity and purpose alive. Key album: Spirit of Music

Orishas, CUBA
Combines lyrical wizardry with traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms to make cutting-edge hip-hop. Key album: A Lo Cubano

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
The Nortec Collective (Mexico)
Cheikh Lo's band (Senegal)
Cornershop (Britain)

You could have posted that for convenience.

Normally I would say that TIME is full of monkey****, but this list doesn't seem to be that bad! Having said that, I do think there are a few very influential bands from Canada that may have been overlooked. Arcade Fire, anyone? Broekn Social Scene?

keep in mind I saw it 2 years ago ... I think I couldn't find out when it was done ..think about as I down loaded some Aterciopelados
:king:
there on the list and defenantly in my top 5 rock bands in spanish list
(not that I "rate" music because it sounds snobish ...my favorites I should say)

My list would have been something like....

Rammstein (Germany)
Arch Enemy (Sweeden)
VNV Nation (Great Britain)
Covenant (Sweeden)
Bjork (Iceland)
Prodigy (Great Britain) (I'm not even that big a fan, it's just they deserve it)
Sepultura/Soulfy (Brazil....I list both because obviosuly Max Calavera left Sepultura for Soufly)
Placebo (Great Britain)
Iron Maiden (Great Britain....as with prodigy i'm not the biggest of fans but their influence spreads far and wide across the whole of Metal and they put on a good live show)

Featuring mostly Metal, Rock and Industrial/EBM there:mischief:

In regards to the actual list, I don't think U2 deserve to be in it, there are many, many better rock bands than them around. Radiohead I don't personally like but I see why they are included. I don't really know enough about teh others to comment.

It's extremely hard to make such a list, since it's impossible to make it completely objective, as it will mostly be a matter of taste.
That being said, the bands on the list which I actually know, deserves to be there, IMO.
I miss Godspeed You Black Emperor!, though.

Those bands only look good compared to the rest of the crap that Canada produces.

Covenent (Sweeden)
[spelling nazi]That's Covenant, Sweden[/spelling nazi]
And personally I think there's lots of Swedish bands that are better, even in the EBM category. Check out Necro Facility, btw, Swedish Skinny Puppyish industrial.

I only recognize U2, Portishead and Radiohead. :ack:

U2 ceased to be good years ago, listening to the other two is as pleasant as driving nails into your flesh. But who would expect Time to list anything but 'safe' and 'non-offensive' bland crap.

How the hell could a Top 10 list of bands not include the United States?

Everyone knows, when you're discussing music, you ignore all of the world except America and Britain.
Arcade Fire, anyone?
The Arcade Fire is half from Texas. This half causes all the greatness.

You do realise that the site states it is a top ten of world bands outside of the U.S?

Your failure to include smilies means I am unsure;)

JUDAS!

Serioously though, are you not a fan of Canadian music at all? i think Arcade Fire is great, but certainly not my favourite by far. I think Buck 65 might take that award...

who the hecks cornershop?

Yes, and that makes it worthless. :p

Although, I do appreciate the subtle implication that we are better than Planet Earth:
Below are the 10 best bands on planet Earth.

Want a job in the Canadian music industry? Simple: watch MTV, look for what's been done to death by the Americans already, find a band in Canada doing the same thing (procedure: throw a stone, enter the first club it hits), stick a Maple Leaf on it, register with SOCAN so that Canadian media can use them to fulfill their CanCon requirements without having to think. Repeat.

We did produce some semi-useful bands in the 70s and 80s, but otherwise this country has been as musically useless as it has been in all other cultural areas.

That said, Rush rocks!
