19Delta's ship yard

You can use the same typing procedure for a lot of other operations such as rotate, extrude, grab, etc.

I wanted to post an update. I'm really close to being done with the Bismarck. I've added Tomahawk cruise missile launchers, the gun directors and range finders from the Iowas modernization, and the air search radar is in the process of being added. Instead of M2 .50 machine guns, I'm going to be placing Mk 38 Mod 2 25 mm guns and the Talos missile launchers will be replaced be the RIM rolling airframe missiles. The two large helipads on the previous pics have been removed. The area at the rear of the ship should be big enough to hold a Seahawk with no difficulties. I will post new pictures as soon as I complete the model.

The only problem that I have is that there is no back story for this ship. I've already taken the liberty of commissioning it into the US Navy. I think this would be a good opportunity to see the writing skills of the community. Let's see who can come up with the best backstory as to how the Bismarck would've survived the war and ended up serving in the US Navy into the modern day.

How about Tirpitz getting damaged and captured in a raid, and later given to the US by the Brits?

Surely we can make it about how it was refloated after a devastating war with teh evul Soviets and refitted with modern equipment-weaponry-radars-etc. a la Space Battleship Yamato?

How about Tirpitz getting damaged and captured in a raid, and later given to the US by the Brits?

I thought about that, but I'm also planning to make a model of the Tirpitz that was captured by the Soviet Union.

I was thinking of three possible scenarios:

1. The Bismarck was able to make it back to the port in Brest, was repaired and remained there until the end of the war where it was captured by advancing American forces.

2. The scuttling charges failed to detonate. The Bismarck had taken heavy damage, but remained afloat and was later captured by the British. After repairs were completed, she was given to the US Navy to help cover the loss of US battleships at Pearl Harbor.

3. Captain Lindeman, instead of carrying out his orders to raid Atlantic convoys, takes his ship and his crew and defects to the United States. The Bismarck spends the next months with the crew being questioned and the ship being studied. The United States enters the war after the attack at Pearl Harbor. The United States is in desperate need of capital ships after the attack, and so decides to enlist the Bismarck into the US Navy. The US Navy decides to keep Captain Lindeman in command and allows him to bring his crew with new enlistees and officers replacing the men that decided to stay out of the fight. The Bismarck is refitted and sent to the Pacific theater because the Pacific Fleet is in desperate need of battleships, and because the US Navy doesn't want to pit the crew of the Bismarck against their own countrymen.

This last one was pretty far fetched, but I thought it was worth mentioning. The second one was my personal favorite. I've read a lot about the Bismarck, and the most recent expedition to the wreck found that none of the British shells or torpedoes penetrated the secondary armor belt on the ship. Several sources cite that the Bismarck could've remained afloat for at least a day after the battle, and could've been captured by the British if the crew hadn't of scuttled the ship.

Or...what about this;

The Tirpitz wreck was broken up by a joint Norwegian and German salvage operation after the war and secretly put back together by the Germans in Germany

The Bismarck was sunck too, but it was in undeep waters and easy to recover.
It was secretly recoverd and brought back to France. From their the refit started.....

Why not keep Bismarck, and even Tirpitz if so, as German modern BBs.
In a mod or scenario Germany could really keep going with or without Adolf.

Playing Germany should then of course have the oppertunity to upgrade the WW2 versions to modern BBs. OK perhaps not a swastika, but at least something that make it German.

All nations that, in game playing, created BBs around WW2 should have a shot of upgrading with better missiles defense and attack like the Iowa modern versions.

I planned on doing three different versions. I'm this close (pinches fingers) to being done with the US Navy version, I wanted to do a Soviet version, and finally a German version. The Soviet Navy version will be easy, all I have to do is replace American upgrades with Soviet upgrades and put the 15 inch guns back on. The German version on the other hand, will be a little more difficult. Most of the equipment that the modern German Navy uses is from Nato, which in turn is also mostly derived from the US Navy. I said most of it, but not all of it. A few things are easy to find pictures of. Obviously, a Goal Keeper CIWS will replace the Phalanx, but some of the other stuff is a bit more obscure and a little more difficult to find online. A great deal of time was spent researching modern US Navy weapons and equipment to put on this ship. I want the weapons and equipment to be as accurate as possible for this ship. I'm putting a lot into this one. I've gone as far as to make sure the railings, staircases, doors and port holes are to the proper scale, or they are as close as I can get them. There have been a few minor changes here and there, but the general layout of the Bismarck is still intact. Those of you who are familiar with the Bismarck will recognize it straight away, but when you inspect it closer, you will start to notice the modern equipment installed. I've impressed myself with this one, and I hope that you will all feel the same way.

Let me finish the current version first so I can decide what I will need. Once I get this posted, it will be easier to figure out what needs to be replaced, and what should stay.

Almost done, just wanted to post another pic to show my progress. Only minor stuff left now, should be complete in another day or so.

I'm going to go ahead and say that this one is done.

More to follow

To answer Redback's question, by some miracle of fate, the Bismarck survived its encounter with the Royal Navy's Home Fleet. She ended up serving in the US Navy fighting against the Japanese in the Pacific Theater. She continued to serve after the war alongside the Iowas lending her new 15" .50 guns to shore bombardment duty against the North Koreans and again in Vietnam. After Vietnam, she was placed in mothballs. She was to be called up again to be a part of Ronald Reagan's 600 ship navy. Along with the four Iowas, she was refitted and brought up to date with modern technology. After sea trials to test her new equipment, she became the center piece of one of the Navy's new Battleship Battle Groups. She served in the gulf war and various other conflicts throughout the globe. She continues to serve today alongside the Iowas fulfilling the role of heavy gun support as mandated by congress. She is currently serving off the coast of Somalia interdicting pirates and stopping and inspecting suspected arms smuggling vessels from Iran.

And given that Ronald Reagan wanted his Star Wars programme and all, this gives rise to the concept of a Space Battleship Bismarck…
