The Russians didn't play like a team.
On the Canadian team the 4 best players all played for the San Jose sharks in the NHL. The teamwork of the 4 players was the most strongest asset.
Teamwork is the strongest asset to victory.
Not like the Russian team, which just choose the strongest Russian players from all different areas, and expect them to work together.
THe russians were skating really slow because they were confused, they needed more time to play together. Like the Canadians started playing like a team ONLY after their game against Germany.

The Russians have just shown that having the best players all under one team does not create the perfect team.

The Russian and Finnish coaches need to learn about pulling the goalie - looking for signs that a goalie is not on his game or that the rest of the team needs a wake-up call. These guys get pulled all the time in the NHL and while it will sting to get yanked in an Olympic game, it's usually better for the rest of the team.

Yep. This time it was after 4-0 that Kiprusoff himself skated to the bench, not sure if our coach would've pulled him otherwise even then. In a situation where we have two absolutely world-class goalies (Kiprusoff and Bäckström) the goalie could've been pulled already after the second goal. The numbers were beatable by then, but the team was clearly in a shock, so such a wake-up call would've been good. I really don't like our current coach, Jukka Jalonen. Though he has done good job in the Finnish league, he is IMO all too soft-spoken and hasn't done well switching the momentum during the tough periods of play (I can't recall any match where Finland with him would've won a match after being down by even one goal).

Sweden takes the women's curling gold. Drat! Was hoping that the cardiac kids could pull off another 10th or 11th end victory... :(

Surprised that they never got called for too many men on the ice when they put their spare player into an earlier game. Only the third pregnant woman to compete at the Olympics.

Whew that hockey game got a little closer than I'd have liked in the 3rd period. FANTASTIC last-second save from Luongo to preserve the win. He made the big save(s) when he needed to.

Looking forward to the gold medal match against the US! Should be a pretty awesome game, especially if the team Canada that showed up for the first period against Russia and the team USA that showed up in the first period against Finland both show up.

A couple of gold and a bronze in short track speedskating, a silver in curling, and an advance to the gold medal game in hockey. Another prett good day here. As expected, Canada's picking up many of their medals in the latter half of the games.

I had a hard time picking up the puck, but everyone on the TSN panel is convinced it was Luongo. I'm going to head back to the PVR in a bit to take another look, but first I'm going to watch the short track medal presentations.

It looked like his glove got a peice of it and then it hit the post, but in my opinion if his glove wasn't here it still would of hit the post

Missed the game because I had one of my own. Both teams had radios on the bench to follow the Canada-Slovakia tilt on our off-shifts. It was awesome.

I enjoy beating Russia almost as much as I hate losing to the States.

Here's to a great game.

So I watched the play again (Canada-Slovakia). From the angles they initially showed in the post game, cross-bar and post were eliminated, leaving only the glove. On the later post-game (9:49 PST according to my PVR), they showed a direct overhead angle which clearly shows it was a glove save. It didn't appear to hit the post afterward either. The first save on that play was hard enough (point shot was redirected), and then the final save was HUGE. :worship:

Another great day!! Men's short track comes through with some medals.

Canada is now ahead in the medal standings measured the European way - but I am not sure that is fair either. I think a better way is how Canada used to rank them: 3 points for Gold, 2 for Silver & one for Bronze.

My nominee for closing games flagbearer: Joannie Rochette. I don't care that she was not a gold medal winner. Under the circumstances it was a gold medal performance, especially in the short program.

Hmm, can somebody top these fourth places? It just looks to me that this is a pretty high amount of bad luck ;-) Well, there's more important things, like we can still get two more medals (Curling Men Bronze and David Cologna in 50km Cross-Country). The latter most probably being the flag bearer for Switzerland as he is the only Swiss Gold medallist still in town ;-)

Swiss 4th Places

Ski Men Combinedi: 4. Carlo Janka
Ski Women Giant Slalom: 4. Fabienne Suter
Snowboard Men Halfpipe: 4. Iouri Podladtchikov
Twoman Bobsleigh Men: 4. Schweiz I Rüegg/Grand
Curling Women: 4. Schweiz
Figure Skating Men: 4. Stephane Lambiel

Podladtchikov and Lambiel just needing something like 0.5 points more...

IIRC the austrians are leading in that regard, though that might have changed by now :)

A couple of gold and a bronze in short track speedskating...
Apolo Ohno claims that 1 of those medals was due to the loyalties of the Canadian judge. And after looking at the finish numerous times, I'd have to agree with him. Ohno didn't seem to cause Tremblay to fall, while Hamelin apparently did cause Sung Si-Bak to go down.

But such is the way of short-track speed skating. It will always be controversial because so much relies on the judge's interpretation of what actually transpired when someone falls.

I have to say I really like watching curling. Such a great strategy sport...

Anyhow, good luck to the Canadians tomorrow. Coming back from the 6th seed looked really tough and they did it with flair. Let's hope the American team (or Ryan Miller) can hold off the onslaught!

Also, let's hope everyone comes out healthy especially my 4 Blackhawks. :D
