IIRC the austrians are leading in that regard, though that might have changed by now :)
No, they should at least have two 4th places more than you.

Funny though how the Canadians switch to the gold medal count now that they're not owning the podium in the other count.

Also, I find six 4th places in more than 70 competitions to date not really that much. It's the usual media bs.

Alright mitsho, 4th & 5th place finishes for Canada (I included 5th because a lot of Canadians lament the 5th place finishes as much as the 4th place). I think that's all of them, but it's possible I missed one or two.

4th place:
men's short track 1500m, Olivier Jean
men's moguls, Vincent Marquis*
ladies' short track 500m, Jessica Gregg*
ladies' 1000m, Kristina Groves*
men's short track 1000m, Charles Hamelin
men's ski cross, Crhis Delbosco
men's team sprint free, Canada (x-country ski)

5th place:
ladies' moguls, Chloe Dufour-Lapointe*
ladies' 3000m, Clara Hughes*
men's moguls, Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau*
men's downhill, Erik Guay
men's snowboard cross, Robert Fagan*
men's figure skating, Patrick Chan
men's super-G, Erik Guay
ladies' skeleton, Melissa Hollingsworth
men's 30km pursuit, Ivan Babikov (x-country ski)
men's short track 1000m, Francois Hamelin
2 man bobsleigh, Pierre Lueders & Jesse Lumbsden
ladies' ski cross, Kelsey Serwa*
men's aerials, Kyle Nissan
ladies' short track 1000m, Kalyna Roberge

*there was also a Canadian on the podium for this event.

Formaldehyde - I'm still undecided on the foul in the short track race. In some angles it does look like Ohno pushed Tremblay, in others it didn't. There were questions of Hamelin knocking the Korean down, but there's also a clear shot of the Korean grabbing at Hamelin's skate as he fell. It was a tough call, and there's always some subjectivity in judged/officiated events. Ohno's had enough calls go his way that he shouldn't complain too loudly about the one that didn't. Maybe he's just upset they didn't have the ref that likes him? (the one who had to stay away from the rink due to death threats following the DQ of the Korean relay team)

I have to say I really like watching curling. Such a great strategy sport...

Curling is just great to watch.. we could have had that gold! ah well, it was a glorious day for Canada yesterday anyway

Can't wait for the hockey final tomorrow :P Hopefully it doesn't turn into a game of goalies

Poland got gold today, in the 30km women's cross country race :P

2 more golds in the last 5-10 minutes for Canada!

One in the men's pursuit (long track speedskating) and one in the PGS - Jasey Jay Anderson finally got his Olympic medal in his 4th games.

Canada #1!

Also, I'm going to predict a gold for Kevin Martin in curling, predict a gold in men's hockey, and at least one medal in men's bobsleigh, giving Canada a total of at least 26 medals, beating the number from Torino. (And my prediction would mean at least 14 golds :yeah: )

Curling starts soon. That's going to be a good final to watch vs norway!

Poland just beat the U.S. to get the women's team persuit speed skating bronze. USA #4

I'm happy with both medal counts for Poland and Canada so far. Six medals for Poland TRIPLES our previous best winter olympic medal haul (2 in Torino). Yep, we kinda suck as a winter sport country  Three medals for Justyna - I'm very happy for her! She got the second ever winter olympic gold for Poland this morning in the 30km xcountry race

As for Canada, we're having a brilliant olympics. We've only ever had 38 gold medals at the winter olympics BEFORE Vancouver's 12 (so far). The people responsible for making Canadians feel that we aren't "owning the podium" can all go to hell. (and that includes the organizers who made the highest medal count a target - very unrealistic)

Bronze for Lyndon Rush in men's four man bobsleigh!

Nah, it was reasonable.

Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight has been compiling projections of medal counts from a bunch of sources.

Before the games started, the US was projected to win 29.6 medals, Germany 32.0 and Canada 32.7. At this point the US is +6 from the projection, the highest positive variance and Canada is -6.2, the highest negative variance.

Gold medals are currently +0.1 for Canada, so pretty much right on target.

FWIW, Poland is -1.4 in the gold medal count, +0.7 in the total medal count.

You can't really predict gold medals though.. I mean, yes, you can estimate statistically how many we're gonna get. but look at what happened - a LOT of Canadians ended up finishing in 4th and 5th. They JUST missed out on a medal. I remember looking at the stats a couple days ago. We had almost as many in the top 6 as the Americans, but while 75% out of all Americans in the top 6 finished in the top 3, for Canada it was only 35% (or some number in the 30s)

We're doing really well these Olympics, but a lot of athletes are missing the podium by milliseconds. The total medal projections make it look like we're way off the mark here, but in reality we are kicking ass.

Gold for Kevin Martin in curling!

Those canadian curling chaps are a crafty lot. I hoped Norway would steal the gold from them like they did in the 2002 olympic, but they played one of their worst games of the tournament. And thus a well deserved victory for Kevin Martin's shiny head.

You win the Gold for Pants. Fair?

The pants are all sorts of awesome. I desperately want a pair.

I wasn't a fan of the color they had on today. If I heard correctly before the game, team Norway had different color pants depending on what color rock they were throwing. True?

I'm not sure. But they did have two types with two differnt colour patterns. IIRC, one was red, white and blue, while the other was red, white and grey. I think I prefer the latter, and I think that's what they wore today.

Finland 5 - Slovakia 3 :) That match was just awesome: First period 1-0, second 0-3, third 4-0.

South Korea - 13 medals only from speed skating. Its strange that you should get that many medals practically from one sport.

Congrats to the Canadians. You may not have "owned the podium" but you did have a "controlling interest" in gold medals. The U.S. broke the record for most medals ever but your country put on a great show and impressive showing.

Regarding hockey, it looked like Babcock assigned Toews to Ovechkin against the Russians. I wonder if he'll do the same today against Parise. Should be fun to watch but it looks like the Canadian team is finally running on all cylinders. Ryan Miller will have to play out of his skull today.

Well thanks, I think I have to concede ;-) but for the record I have to say that we (Swiss) are mostly good in the Ski/Snowboard sports, we do not have a good speedskating or cross-country/Biathlone. And these two "options" seem to be able t generate an awful amount of medals&fourth places.

Canadian teamwork like this will allow them to win this game...
