2011 MLB Thread

Just your typical 6 singles to score 3 runs to win it in the bottom of the 9th kind of win. :crazyeye:

considering espn america's love affair with the red sox and yankees forces the tv schedule to be al east heavy.
As for my ESPN comment, it does follow the East Coast bias trend.

Maybe what ESPN is in love with is the increased advertising revenue that results from more people watching their shows?

The biggest average households numbers, according to the story (which is based on Nielsen Media Research numbers) watch the Yankees (325,000), Red Sox (233,000) and Mets (204,000). The highest average ratings, according to the story, are found in Boston (9.75), St. Louis (8.04) and Minnesota (6.92).

tl:dr - If you and your town would like to see more nationally televised games, as well as increased exposure on sportscenter; step one would be to build a national network of fans who sell out parks wherever they go. TV loves sold out games, they make for great crowd shots. Step two is to use that fanbase to pump up ratings for your away games.

If, after achieving that, ESPN still ignores you, THEN, maybe, the 'East Coast Bias (TM)' argument will have merit.

Edit -- Just noticed that Darkness is a Stl fan. You guys get plenty of national games (because of your massive, nationwide fanbase), I don't know what you're complaining about. And Owen, you'll have a lot this year at least.

Nope! You see, unlike the Phillies, the Dodgers do not tout their staff as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

*EDIT* Also, really Bochy? You put in Casilla? Bleh, maybe he hasn't learned anything since last season...
 the more you post, the more stupid you look :) keep at it, old boy.

addit: this one is for you, O :p

See, this is what I mean.

Matt Cain had one of the (only slightly less than Matthewson) greatest pitching performances in Postseason history. I mean, no earned runs through the whole playoffs and WS. Does anyone talk about that? NO! What kind of a bullspit is that?!?!

That's a bit of bad luck for the Cardinals, Matt Holliday had to get an appendectomy and is going to be out of the lineup for an unknown amount of time.

What's on TV in the US is not by definition also on TV in the Netherlands... ;)

But I'm not saying I don't understand broadcasting the Red Sox and the Yankees a lot. I understand just fine, I just would like to see more other teams instead of just either the Yankees or the Red Sox in 75% of the games broadcast in my country...

Still, I should probably not complain, it's already nice to have the NFL and MLB live on my TV. :)

Losing Holiday sucks... That's a bat you just can't replace, and the Cards are going to need a lot of offense with the current defense that they're playing... :(

A fair point. :) Your gripe may indeed be valid. That's a vicious cycle too. Without local games, more people grow up watching the Sox/Yanks and becoming fans, further decreasing the chance of seeing any variety.

I just get sick of the pity party every time i talk sports with someone residing west of the Appalachians. It is amazing out here how many times you hear the term 'east coast bias'. The sports reporters here in LA are constantly whining about how, for example, the Angels get no respect because they play on the west coast. No, they got no respect because all their division titles came in a division with no competition, and then would promptly and spectacularly lose once they reached the playoffs.

Basically, the 'east coast bias' argument (domestically, at least), is a relic of the days where the time difference made it difficult to see west coast teams play from back east. Nowadays, every game is recorded from every angle, every highlight is repeated ad nauseam on the 50 sports channels we have to choose from, and every team is picked apart by legions of analysts for hoards of fantasy owners. If your team's game isn't playing nationwide, it's because it can't draw ratings, not some super-secret plot where ESPN intentionally tanks it's ratings to promote the AL east teams over the others.

niese threw a respectable game tonight. watch out el j! but really im just hoping my mets cause some head aches for the rest of the nl east. Their line up could pose some problems but the rotation scares me as a mets fan.

cliff lee got a standing ovation for a sacrifice bunt tonight in his second AB. he is a Gem :) that place roared when he took the hill to start the game.

He notched me 11k's for my fantasy team. After lester's performance yesterday I needed something to help catch me up. Especially since my opponent has halladay and linecum. Now I just need my outfielders to stop dropping (Damn holliday and Luke Scott) and the rest of my team to hit for a higher average (seriously guys 7 homeruns and 16 RBI thus far, but you only manage a .187 BA?)

Shut-out for Garcia, confirming last year's promise. Always nice to get the first win of the season under the belt...

Great performance by Garcia! :)
I think the Gards really needed to at least get something positive out of the first series of the season, so Garcia's dominant performance was really well-timed (especially after that louzy spring)...

Halladay, Lee and Oswalt have combined for 23 strikeouts and 1 walk so far. A K/BB ratio of 23:1, not too shabby.

Pffft, they're overrated :)

In other news, while my favorite team is doomed to another year of failure and misery, we did get a triple play before any of you shmucks.
