2011 MLB Thread

Fear not, for of course my brave new world of robo-calls will never come to pass (maybe once blernsball is a reality...). That idea is clearly so far ahead of it's time that i won't waste my time trying to drum up support for it. But for everything else? There's no excuse not to. Review every play upstairs; speed up the pace of the game by eliminating umpire confabs, on-field replays, and many managerial arguments. Everybody wins.

As a side note, I HATE the human error. Can someone please explain to me exactly what it does to improve the game? Because all i see are negatives. Immense negatives with absolutely no redeeming factor. These are sporting events, they are supposed to be decided by the skill and execution of the players. The Umps are supposed to makes sure the rules are followed, not affect the outcome.

edit -- oh ya, great point about the young umps El J, The older guys would usually let a skipper say what he had to say to stick up for his guys, often showing a little grin as the manager went back to the dugout; these new guys are high strung, and too confrontational. The ump should always be the calmest person on the field (now that Garrett Anderson has retired at least).

ugh. The Blue Jays bullpen is awful this year. No lead is safe.

Anyone see what led to the Ortiz/Gregg fight in the Orioles @ Red Sox game? Was an Oriole hit by a pitch earlier in the game or something? Was Big Papi crowding the plate and Gregg took exception?

I remember how I used to think Derek Jeter was really overrated, but I was wrong. He's a hall of famer now.

More than that. He's probably going to go down as the greatest Yankee shortstop ever.

Just wondering, but why don't postseason numbers count for career totals? Seems to me like Jeters 180-something postseason hits are just as important (probably even more important actually) than his 3000 regular season hits...

I like to think that my personal disdain is enough to invalidate any achievement done in pinstripes. Add another zero to that hit total and maybe I'll tip my cap to you Derek (maybe), until then, you're a bum.

Jeter's always been an amazing hitter, I think he has also always been an overrated defender. That was usually where my groans came from whenever some Yankee fan went on and on about how he was the best shortstop in the game bla bla bla.

But as far as hitting goes, yes, Jeter is a genuinely one of the best offensive SS I've ever seen. Congrats to him.

oh and uhh YANKEES SUCK *cough* ahem, sorry, that was just a reflex

He certainly is, but if you go back and look at some of the other yankee shortstops it's not as impressive as you would think.

Where would you put Jeter in a list of greatest Yankees of all time???

That all-time team is really impressive. I would say behind Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Berra, Mantle, and maybe Dickey. Sixth maybe seventh.

Are we looking at just hitters then?

A month back or so Dave Winfield compiled a list of his all-star Yankee team. It was amazing.

No, i considered pitchers too, but i think Jeter was probably a better shortstop than they were pitchers. I mean Pennock, Ford, i think Gomez are HOF'ers, but imo Jeter is a little above. Rivera has a case i'm surprised i forgot him. Not sure if he is higher though. Has less impact on games even though he was arguably greater.

I saw that list it was very cool.
