2013 NCAA Football Thread

Dylan Thompson is a rising senior at SCAR. He played a fair bit last year and a good bit more the year before, but I'm not sure how good he is really. He's certainly serviceable. I wouldn't say South Carolina is hurting. Likewise, there's nothing wrong with Jeff Driskel at Florida except that he has no offense around him. Miss State's got Dak Prescott coming back, and he fits into Mullen's system well, but again, I'm not sure he's anything special.

And I agree some of the newcomers could break out, but right now they're all just potential . . .

Hence the caveat I put in with my opening question. :)

I am also in agreement on the QBs. Matt Joeckel has experience, but it is quite likely that soph. Kenny Hill or true frosh. Kyle Allen are the frontrunners. Matt Joeckel is also done with schoolwork in May, so curious to see if he would transfer a la Russell Wilson/Jameil Showers to a starting role elsewhere or stays and gets into a graduate program at A&M.

Matt Elam to Kentucky. Better to be the big fish in the little pond . . .

Especially the hometown pond . . .

EDIT: According to Rivals, that bumps this year's UK class up to 13th nationally. And 8th in the SEC . . .

EDIT EDIT: For anyone who doesn't understand that football season is 365 days in Alabama, Auburn dominated Alabama start to finish in men's bball tonight, but the highlights were Malzahn being presented with the 'Iron Bowl trophy' at halftime and assuring fans that "it's going to be here a while". The game ended with the student section chanting "Just like football . . "

EDIT EDIT EDIT: And if you don't follow basketball, let's be clear: both these programs are pretty bad. Auburn is 2-22 in the SEC over the last 24 games, with both wins coming over Alabama. Meanwhile, Alabama hasn't won on the road in the SEC in almost two years . . .

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT: Traditionally, the SGA president that lost the Iron Bowl football game sings the opposing team's fight song at the subsequent bball game hosted by the winner. Alabama's SGA failed to attend this year, citing weather. Yet the team and media had no trouble making it down . . .

Kirby Smart and Gus Malzahn are both attending the same birthday party at Rashaan Evans' house on Saturday . . .

And the winner of the Super Bowl is . . .

The team with Alabama players on it! I mean, like, duh . . .

EDIT: Jesse Williams also the first native Australian, less interestingly. He was on IR all year anyway . . .

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, there are three times more Aggies on the active roster than 'Bama players. Not to mention one is the defense's team captain.

Statistics are are fun!

Actual numbers:
3 from Texas A&M, 1 from Alabama. Yes, I am not counting the one guy that has been on injured reserve since August.

Haha... there were like 4 NC State players out there ;) .

 I think y'all maybe take me too seriously. "I mean, like, duh" is pretty much the same as a :mischief:

I just don't watch the NFL at all so after CFB is over I pick NFL teams to follow based on the Alabama players on the rosters, and this year the only one without an Alabama player by the time they got to the divisional round was Denver. But Denver kept winning. So it made it exciting . . .

It's a pretty fun method, I've been doing it for years. I'd recommend it if you don't have a favorite NFL team yourselves. You'd be surprised how often you can find a guy from your team somewhere on at least one of the playoff rosters . . .

Well I am a Texans fan, formally an Oilers fan (those Tennessee Titans :cringe:) and play fantasy football, so unfortunately I cannot participate in your fun method. But I am always partial to teams who have Aggie head coaches, like the Raiders or who have Aggies on their rosters.

So you can imagine how my fanboy side felt when I saw Mel Kiper's 1.0 mock draft and Gil Brandt's comments about Manziel's comparison to Tarkinton:

Gil Brandt ‏@Gil_Brandt Jan 31

RT @McClain_on_NFL: Gil Brandt on Manziel: "He's like Tarkenton only better." Uh, Gil, Tarkenton is in HOF. "I know. And I mean what I say."

I'm a little skeptical of Manziel in the NFL, but what do I know :dunno:

I will say that as much as I really enjoyed watching him play for two years in the SEC, I'm very very happy that I will not be seeing him again ;)

That tree Mike Evans either, come to think of it . . .

EDIT: Ty Flournoy-Smith brings Alabama's class up to 26 of 27 possible. It seems like a strange choice to me. He's apparently a fine JUCO TE with a lot of offers, but TE isn't really a position of need in the short term, we're tight on space and he's a character issue. This after letting Pettway back in this year's class as well, and Tony Brown getting arrested last month. That's Saban's just losing control of the program, dammit :mischief:

Yeah, just nip in the bud and get rid of him now. The rest of us in the SEC will be okay with that. :p

Mack Brown in the news again as recruits are coming forward and saying Brown is telling them to not come to Texas. If this is this the case, it's another bad mark on Brown.

So much for his reputation of being all class in that case...

I just can't believe we got Rashaan Evans from Auburn. I don't even know what to say. 100% shocked . . .

EDIT:
Kevin Sumlin said:
We had a great year. The only problem is we were fourth in the country and third in our own division.

:D

EDIT EDIT: Florida three star signs with Ole Miss, Utah and a JUCO. I know Utah plays a lot of Thursday games, but I still think he's going to have some commuting issues . . .

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Wow, even our crappy basketball team is having a good night. Or Arkansas is having a bad night. Not counting their leading scorer, the rest of their team is 1-of-25 from the floor . . .

Even with all our recruiting success under Saban, this is the first year that we've won the mythical 'recruiting title' from all four services. LSU was also second in all four services. Meanwhile, the basketball team is down by two with five minutes to go . . .

It's usually Scout's fault. We haven't won a Scout title since '08 . . .

I don't know anything about basketball, but I know that when Alabama's playing you can count on the other guys going on a big run during the first and last five minutes of every game, you can count on us losing on the road, and you can count on us losing if the other guys score more than 65 . . .

You know what, after NSD, I would love to see a study of how many 5 star guys from a class actually go in the first round, a la Andrew Luck, and how many 3 star or lower are taken in the first round a la Ryan Tannehill.

By the way, speaking of star ratings, I a little confused on how it would work out that LSU who has one 5 star player, sixteen 4 star players and five 3 star players is ranked second while Texas A&M who has three 5 star players, thirteen 4 star players and six 3 star players is ranked fourth. I'm not complaining since star rankings are about as safe and reliable as children running with scissors (Blake Bortles being a 3 star guy and so far has a top 5 draft grade, barring mishaps in the predraft process).
