2013 NCAA Football Thread

I just meant they weren't in the last post where I linked to a playoff story. I knew Pat Haden and I thought I'd heard Tom Osborne. I definitely hadn't heard Ty Willingham because I would have remembered. I probably wouldn't have remembered Wieberg if I'd heard his name mentioned or not . . .

Saturday's 11:21 SEC network game features the only two teams who still control their own destiny in the East. For those of you unfamiliar with SEC scheduling, this is amusing because the 11:21 game is the redheaded stepchild of the SEC slate every weekend, always gets last pick and is universally loathed by the various teams' fanbases . . .

It also features two teams that have lost their starting QBs . . .

I'm a little surprised FSU is listed as the favorite, but I think they're probably a more complete team than Clemson, and who I think I'd bet would win the game.

Yeah, FSU for me too. They play better defense and I don't think Winston will be affected by the road crowd . . .

I've got FSU as well, the question will be whether or not they can win by a very large amount. If Clemson plays like they did against Boston College, they sure aren't going to beat South Carolina or FSU, and will have a tough time against Georgia Tech.

:dunno: If FSU plays like they did against Boston College, they're not beating Clemson or Florida. Clemson's performance vs. BC is easy to excuse, to me. A road game over an outmatched opponent the week before the game that could define their season. No surprise they came out flat . . .

Nice win by ULL tonight. What's happened to Petrino's Hilltoppers? 1-2 in the Sunbelt . . .

Those were leaked. I wrote about them last week. http://www.landgrantholyland.com/20...-playoff-selection-committee-condoleezza-rice

I'm going to love watching Barry Alvarez work with Long from Arkansas. #BERT-GATE

Good job with the article. Just one thing I thing you should consider revising in it. At one point, you mention that "Rice would also have the advantage of not being associated with the regular payroll of any team or conference, making it harder for others to cry that she's biased." While this is technically true, she is not associated with the payroll of "any team or conference." She is on the payroll of Stanford University, as a Professor of Political Economy in the Graduate School of Business. Therefore, the chain of inferences necessary for a bias claim is not far different from any of the other members of the board.

I thought about that, but I don't think the argument is quite as sound. The others have had direct ties to athletic departments or conference departments, where an argument for a direct benefit is probably more clear. I'm not sure how Condi would theoretically derive benefit from preferential treatment of Stanford. She was on the ND board of directors for a long time, and has strong ties to Alabama as well, so I'm not sure it would be totally fair to make the same argument that we could for say, Hayden at USC.

Thurs night 'Blackout' at UNC for matchup vs Miami... UNC has been terrible :( .

Her profile (linked below) makes clear that she has direct ties to the athletic department. It states that the Stanford athletic department directly reported to her as Provost from 1993-1999, and that she also "oversaw budget, recruiting, coaching personnel and bowl appearances." Not to mention she "[h]ired Tyrone Willingham as
head coach in 1994." http://www.collegefootballplayoff.com/story?id=9830677. I do not know how much more direct you can get.

Based on the information provided above, it would be totally fair to make the same argument we would for Hayden at USC.

Well, it wasn't good football, but at least it was exciting. And as ugly as the rest of the game was, I do have to give Miami credit for executing the four-minute offense pretty much to perfection. They're still not a good team though . . .

What you saw tonight was two, not very good teams playing an ugly game. I still think that Miami wins the Coastal Division.

Which reflects poorly on the Coastal division.

I've got VaTech. The division should come down to the head-to-head matchup between those two teams since they are both undefeated in conference play and neither should be expected to lose two of the other conference games that remain on their schedules. Miami will lose to FSU but that wouldn't matter if they had the head-to-head tiebreaker.

VaTech's defense is among the best in FBS while their offense is inept. In other words, it will be a replay of Miami/Florida -- hopefully without all the turnovers this time -- which should result in a VaTech win . . .
