Argentina has a very large debt. They really need frech money, so they could sell Patagonia to the USA.

In a dream I had, terrorists strike washington DC and LA in 2009, the american government collapses by 2012 and state-spanning riots break out and cities are burning by the dozens in 2014, and I take this as an opportunity to plop my Plutonian Empire onto the world map for real and get minnesota and colorado out of it. Elsewhere around the world, there are nuclear attacks, either by rogue nations, terrorists, or aliens, and Paris, London, Shanghai, and dozens of other cities in Europe and Asia are nuked. By 2020, I sneak in a trojan horse nuke and detonate it as the New Years' ball is dropped in NYC and blow up the city, to "punish" the USA (or what's left of it) for something, and the USA is invaded from the north (either me or canada or aliens do it), and the USA ceases to exist by 2030.

1) I'm not sure about all the other nationalities here, but in the US we call breaking off large sections of territory to be independent or under the control of a foreign government "treason". And we don't like it.
2) Even if they did just that, Canada really has no military to speak off, and it would only take the time required to bring the US military back from wherever they are in the world to recounquer the lost territory. And burn Ottawa to the ground out of spite, most likely. And maybe annex Alberta.

Nope, it's been tried before. And the US government was surprisingly lenient to the separatist rebels.
I don't think the map will change a whole lot in 20 years. We're in a period of relative stability, and I don't think that will change too much.
