We are not alone! The big fear that had previously consumed us (that we were alone on an island and needed MapMaking ASAP to make contact with everyone) has been disproved!

We now have an enemy in our midst and they're already encroaching on territory that should rightfully be ours! As such, I think it prudent that our only course of action be to change our strategy.

Option 1 (currently in effect): Continue researching Alphabet as quickly as possible and then switch to a different tech.

Pros: We will get Alphabet in 19 turns (or sooner as our cities grow and yield more beakers towards research) without trading for it.

Cons: We don't earn any money and our treasury is dangerously low. GameCatcher already has Alphabet and might be willing to trade it to us. It delays discovery of some more critical techs with military applications (Iron Working, Horseback Riding, etc...).

Option 2: Horsemen

Pros: Horsemen can more quickly reach the front lines in a war against GameCatcher. Their retreat advantage can be quite powerful in an Ancient era war. Obsolete Horsemen can be upgraded to our Unique Unit.

Cons: Discovering Horseback Riding is currently two techs away, and at the current level of research, we are still 20 turns away from discovering The Wheel. So we can start building chariots in 20 turns, but they need to be upgraded eventually and we're still 40 turns away from horses then.

Option 3: Swordsmen

Pros: the tech is only 22 turns away at the current level of research (up to 40 turns if we reduce our funding to start accumulating wealth). Swords are arguably the most powerful unit in the Ancient Era.

Cons: Slow movers - it could take a while to reach the front. While they can be upgraded to Medieval Infantry, it's just not the same as our most-feared Riders.

Please cast your vote as to which path we should take from this point. Remember, the next turn will likely be sometime later tonight, so do not delay... cast your vote today!

Yeah, horsemen because of the riders!

I think we should trade for the alphabet too. Offer warrior code?

Do our newfound rivals have masonry? Maybe masonry for aphabet AND ceremonial burial?

One important thing to remember is that walls work with cites as well as towns. You must build it in the town but it carries over to the cities.

This was found by Tacit_Exit testing the effects on the greatwall, somewhere in strategy and tips or strategy articles.

I voted Iron Working. Achieving this knowledge will help us in determining new city placement. Of course, so will Horseback Riding, so it's a tough decision. Iron first, then onto Riders....

I agree. Let us move to swords immediately, then while we connect Iron and upgrade warriors, let us be working towards the Horsemen for future upgrades to Riders.

Keep in mind that Gamecatcher is playing as India (which builds War Elephants that don't require either Horses or Iron). We must consider eliminating them before we get to the age of Chivalry.

or cripple them to point that they can hang around on a tundra island selling there one source of oil later on in the gmae =P

Lets build lots of horseman, and rush them! They wont suspect it! Swordsmen would be to slow and they might be defended better by the time they get up their!

Horses for various reasons:

1 - They're in our UU path.
2 - Gamecatcher will be coming from 1 point, and our horsemen can charge into that confined area
3 - Horsemen can retreat (I once lost 30 swords to a horde of horsemen)
We can put in some swords and speard for defense, but horses should be our priority. We should get The Wheel just to see if we even HAVE horses.

Foreign Affairs supports Iron Working!

Chieftess sums it up perfectly.

Please note I'm generally in favor of swordsmen, but horsemen seem the way to go in this case.

I think we should trade for alphabet while we are still researching it, and once we have it by trade, research Iron working, then the wheel so we can obtain resources.
