300

Pontius Pilate did you really even see the film? The remarks you have about it say you don't.

I saw it on Friday night cuz I was really looking forward to it :\

Ziggy: !!!! That review is better than the movie was...

I think if you go into every single movie expecting them to be historically accurate, you're going to get let down... a lot. Loosen up and enjoy the movie for what it is instead of ranting about all of the things it isn't.

It really is a pet peeve of mine though to see people typically ranging from 12-19 years old going to see movies like 300 and then walking out thinking they are an expert historian on ancient Greek life. I personally would like them to make it historically accurate considering there is plenty more interesting historical occurrences than whatever could be made into a fantasy cartoon piece of crap. However...I realize it is not going to happen and I would individually go to view the movie with an open mind (as much as I possibly could), but it really ruins it when other people, i.e. almost every Middle Schooler, High Schooler, and College aged student walks out of the theater a proclaimed Greek military historian or some newfound passionate Greek history guru.

Well if you think you know Greek history from watching a movie (any movie) then you are dumb :) I just don't know why some of you all were expecting a historically accurate film when it was clear from the first trailer it was fantasy based. It is based on a comic book not after greek historians.

You mean Sparta isnt america and those corrupt temple guys aren't the UN who didnt bless a war that becomes unlawful and Leonidas going at it alone with 300 spartans is not a reference to Bush going at it alone in Iraq and the accusations of Leonidas being a warmonger isnt reference to what the liberals call Bush and when they talk about freedom its not THE AMERICAN VALUE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT?!? speechless!

You mean Iraq isn't the small nation fighting back against an unstoppable military machine, who's goal is to enforce a foreign rule and value system upon them?

I fully agree. However, people that play the civ games fall victim to the same mindset.

But on the bright side movies like 300 and games like Civ also create interest in history by people that would otherwise not really care.

Awesome movie.

I actually expected it to be less accurate, and was happily suprised it was a little more realistic

Here's a comic from CAD about 300:

Reviews like this make me unlikely to go see 300.

If you want historical accuracy, read a book or watch the Discovery Channel (well, maybe). If you want to be entertained, see any movie based on a comic book/graphic novel.

I haven't encountered this myself. It seems to me that the people who see it for mindless entertainment are going to leave the theatre entertained and happier. Those who see it and are suddenly interested in Greek culture because of it are most likely going to realize that 300 ISN'T the definative truth of Greek culture, and do some research anyway. I mean, just look at the number of people visiting the page for the Battle of Thermopylae since the movie was released.

Either way, even if there's some annoying prick who sees the movie and somehow believes it to be pure fact and labels himself an "expert" on Greek history? Annoying people have existed ever since men first started talking, and it's not as if 300 is going to change it. Just smile and ignore them, and then sneek into their house later than night and murder them.

If you think about it,that battle is somewhat less important by comparison on what was going on in the sea at that pivotal time.Of course people do not like grand theme of naval battle but just muscle clad warriors grunting and hacking limbs and other misc. body parts.

But it's not about historical accuracy. I've watched, and enjoyed, plenty of movies that were full of inaccuracies. Rather, it's about the values communicated by the movie. If I excoriate Triumph of the Will, for example, it's not because I think it's a poorly executed propaganda film, nor because I think it's not entirely accurate about what happened at the Nuremburg Rallies. It's because the film is a loving paean to an evil man and the absurd ideal of the Superman.

As Pontiuth said, 300 (from what I see and hear) is an updated, fictional version of Triumph. I criticise it not because I feel offended on behalf of the slighted dead Athenians, nor out of any historian's interest (other than a general distaste for the abuse of history), but because the movie presents a raft of false premises and seductive images that add up to a harmful message. 300 is anti-democratic to its core. It shouldn't be censored, of course, but I do think it is harmful to the polity and should thus be countered with forthright criticism.

Sounds like you should be criticizing the content of the graphic novel/comic and not the movie!

After all, the movie was based on the comic.. whereas the comic was loosely based on the battle in question.

Biggest history nerds ever? I must say, I really do not know ONE person in real life to like movies where history is much altered, and my group of friends is anything but nerdy. ;)

Edit: Crosspost, again....

Right, well, they go together. And the movie will probably reach many more people than the comic did, not to mention that film is by far a more impressive medium.

I acknowledge that my critical position is weakened by the fact that I haven't actually seen the movie, but I'd just as soon not waste the $10.

I saw it with a gaggle of my buddies tonight...just got back.

AWESOME! Man, after that movie I totally felt like skewering a thing or two. Preferably a Persian.

So I finally got around watching it. It was released this Wednesday over here in theatre.

Okay, The visuals were great. The story was hm well i knew what i was going to watch so it didn't matter. I knew it was based on the grahpic novel from Miller so, not really a historical movie. Far from it.

I laughed out loud a couple times, it was a good movie. Nothing spectacular though. Will most likely rent it on DVD to watch it once more in a few months.

In the same kind of movie, altered history, i preferred Kingdom of Heaven. It had more meaning to it.

Now I have to watch The 300 Spartans (1962?).
