Too late...it already is a holiday. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Day

I cant believe you folks didnt know this already.

I refuse to accept an imposter holiday, we already have Patriots' Day in New England.

And frankly any new reference to patriots is one too many. That aside, and the wiki page notes this too, how was 9/11 or the victims thereof related to patriotism?

If everytime we get attacked it becomes a holiday then soon we won't even hafta' work anymore!

I'm happy to just remember all of it on the 4th.

Big difference between that and a notional holiday.

Notional holiday? I am unsure by how you word your phrase whether you agree or disagree with Patriot Day being a National Holiday. It is a National Holiday...just not one of the ones we get an official day off for.:)

...don't make assumptions.

Are people so shallow that they need a holiday to remember this? No. Even though most Americans can't find Iraq on a globe, they still know what Dec. 7 represents.

We have too many "holidays" as it is.

Hehe i seriously doubt that with all the hubbub about iraq right now. Anyway no we dont need a holiday.

Thats true. They switched sides:p
It was the Italians who switched sides in WWI, not the French. In fact the French were fairly hardnosed about prosecuting the war against Germany, what with the whole Saarland business.

Yeah, Patriot Day is on my calendar. Its a ridiculous name for the holiday. I hope they come up with something better when its made official.

Sigh. It doesnt get more official than being signed into law. It is official, congress wrote it up and the President signed it years ago.

Do we seriously have a holiday called patriot day? Cause i never heard of it. Sounds outright jingoistic and silly....

I mean a 'real' Federal holiday. You know, banks, post offices and schools, many businesses closed. Like MLK day.

We don't have a "Pearl Harbor Day" which actually thrust us into a World War. Of course, very few remember when it happened today. I think we will remember long enough, and remember it for what it was.

Yes, we do have a "Pearl Harbor Day", with the same official status as the "Patriot Day".

Unless, of course, Bush issued a signing statement. Sometimes, according to his legal advisers, Bush's signing statements trump the law.

Yes. More school days off, please. :p

Instead of veering the course of the thread off into off topic land, try to keep it focused. Read the wiki. You might learn something.

So..bottom line 9/11 is a national holiday, not just a major get-a-day-off kind of holiday. There are more than just a few national holidays that you dont get a day off for.

I read the wiki. It basically said atthe same time that we were passing bs laws with misleading titles like the "Patriot Act", we also designated a day as "Patriot Day". So, it's technically a holiday. And why not? Bush took the day off in 2001.
