9-11 a holiday?

US "Holidays" or "Celebrations" that are not Federal Holidays (nor created solely for Hallmark's benefit) but are recognized by the U.S. government:

Inauguration Day (Every four years on January 20th)
Armed Forces Day (third Saturday in May)
Flag Day (6/14)
Patriots Day (9/11)
Election Day (First Tuesday after November 2nd)
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (12/7)

It's insulting to Revolutionary War heroes who we honor on Patriot's Day to have a Patriot Day for murder victims.

September 11th should obviously not be a holiday. I don't want a day of sadness turned into something positive. By the way, there is no Holocaust holiday that I know of.

Yom Hashoah.

9/11 falls into the catergory for those things celebrated on Memorial Day. We don't have a holiday for December 7th, 1941.

Holiday

1) a day fixed by law or custom on which ordinary business is suspended in commemoration of some event or in honor of some person.

commemoration doesnt need to mean joyus celebration.

But I dont think 9/11 should be a holiday and as mentioned be taken up under the banner of memorial day.

Too late...it already is a holiday. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Day

I cant believe you folks didnt know this already.

Do we seriously have a holiday called patriot day? Cause i never heard of it. Sounds outright jingoistic and silly....

Ah, now Jingoism Day, that would be sweet!

thousands of people die every day. They can't all have a holiday.
Right.

I also voted no.

Why should we let terrorists decide when our holidays are?

if it is a holiday, it should be one like VJ day, not christmas

I consider it as a holiday (not in a federal-holidayish sense) that we should stop to think and remember thoes who died and/or lost a loved one in thoes attacks.

Eff that.

Holidays need not be Orwellian. This president is so utterly dedicated to giving partiotic troglodytes tumescent members that it makes you wonder if we are all neanderthals again.

I'd say no because I don't think we honor most holidays as a rememberance. We should never forget, and turning it into a day off would make us forget.

Uh yeah...I'm not going to consider that holiday really serious, I will still have a moment of silence for the victims but thats it. I bet in the next 30-50 years from now hardly anyone will do the moment of silence. We don't do one for Pearl Harbor nor the Holocaust.

I would say no for the very same reason the OP said we should. So we never forget it. If 9/11 becomes a holiday it would be the worst thing possible for the memory of that day. Children would look forward to September 11th, people would have September 11th sales. It would be a disaster.

Man, I'm almost tempted to start my own country, just to make Jingoism Day.
If I started my own country every day would be Jingoism day :goodjob:
