A case for forum members easing up on 2K a bit

I couldnt find a picture of your wife on your/her blog..you should put up wedding pictures or something..anyhoo..whats her race/nationality/family history so we can make fun of it. Since ..you know, you think making jokes about people nationality is funny and gives "charecter"...

Moderator Action: If you can not be civil, do not post, this is unacceptable on the forums

You really can't tell the difference between an off-color joke and a personal attack/insult? You really have gone over the edge if you're going to insult the guy's wife.

well honestly.. by "edge" you are saying I've exceeded the comfort level..and since I feel the "comfort level" of civ fantatics appears to be somewhere bordering on coma level apathy, giving the brown eye to that "edge" as I zip past it is prob good thing.

Comfort level? This has nothing to do with that. It's about basic social rules that even children know. Appropriate responses and all that.

WOW the owner of one of Steams competitors Doesnt like Steam?
In related news The Head of Pepsi says he doesn't like the taste of Coke!

I USED to have a great deal of Respect for Frogboy until recently. Complaining that CiV will come bundled with steamworks (which in NO way prevents Impulse, D2D, other Online sellers or bricks & mortar stores from selling it btw) and then keeping Elemental Impulse exclusive is taking the piss. Add to that they are doing a Pre-order to Beta thing, Unfortunately as a European if I want to help them make a better game and get a hard copy of the manual I Have to pay over twice as much as a US customer. I have asked if there is/will be a Euro distributor a couple of times on the forum but no reply.

Huge difference.

Civ is not a Valve game.

Elemental's a Stardock Game

BTW you sure on the Euro costing more? Stardock has said in the past it doesn't believe in that forrm of price discrimination. Go on their forums about it, seriously- you'll probably get a response (and maybe a fix or reason).

I have no issue with Valve using Steam for its own games.

One last thing: please don't judge those who oppose Steam by the actions of a couple of inappropiate posters- I wish they'd stop making us look bad.

Seconded.

Also please don't automatically assume that everyone who has problems with steam is necessarily overall against it. I for example have many concerns about what steam will mean for civ5, but I'm not going so far as to boycott the game or throw hissy fits.

Of course, the same respect must be shown for Steam advocates. Most of them are not just blind fanboys.

Steam is pretty awesome.

I mean, are people mad that they won't be able to pirate the game?

Or how about the awesome store-a-go-go where you go to every damn store in town looking for that one new kickass game and everyones out (And considering WalMart has a better selection of PC games these days than any major game shop, that tells you the state of brick-and-mortar PC sales).

Boxes and manuals are nice, but digital delivery is the way to go.

Steam is pretty awesome.
No, it's crap.
I mean, are people mad that they won't be able to pirate the game?
You realize that Steam games ARE being pirated ?
And that pushing Steam down the throat of people who don't want it will INCREASE piracy, not REDUCES it ?

Funny how clueless fanboys always are.

Being able to buy a game online doesn't require Steam.

Not for everyone, no - not that I object to digital delivery, though.

Akka, if your assumptions hold true then moving from securom to Steam is a scaling down of DRM, therefore we should see the reverse of an increase in piracy due to increase of anti-piracy measures.

You completely fails.

First, it's not because severing your hand is better than severing your arm that severing your hand is "good".

Second, SecuROM, as bad as it is, doesn't make you dependant from online server to be able to play, doesn't autopatch your game and is about the same when it install third-party software on your computer. I'm not sure it's data-mining it though, so it may even be "less bad" in this case too.

Third, SecuROM is not integral to the software, and can be patched out. Steam can't.

So Steam is still far worse. Pretty obvious, already pointed out SEVERAL times, but some people just do not want to see.

I must say I agree that it was a big plus that the DRM for BtS was eventually patched out (around about 18 months or so, wasn't it?).
There's no hope of that with civ5 since steamworks is apparently integral to the core game.

Moderator Action: The trolling stops here - I don't care whether you love or hate Steam or are indifferent or anything inbetween - no further attacks on other users will occur in this thread, if you cannot post without attacking other users then do not post.

As the topic of the thread is easing up on 2k ..I'll add that 2kGreg is one of these trendy people who has their whole life blogged out there on the internet. While I understand the need to be civil, 2kgreg has openly hung himself out there as a quasi-public figure, both as a private person and as an advertiser/salesman for 2k games. Its not "uncivil" to question his choices because he actively invites us to do so with his openness. No one forced him to share his life with a billion strangers but he has and so he must accept the benefits and consequences. Equally, if you are going to be a figurehead for a company selling a product, you are responsible for the work you do and must weather both the love nuggets and daggers. He getting paid to be part mouthpiece part painted targeted. If he cant take the criticism he is welcome to let some else do the job better.

There is a time and place for civil conversation. Like while crafting mods in between expansions or during tournaments. Not 100 days from release of what could be a huge steaming turd. I sure wish I was back in the position to act 100 days before moo3 release...but you cant go back.

Two things: You obviously don't understand the difference between criticism and insults. Attacking someone personally isn't criticism.
Also: You aren't doing anything to tell 2K your reasonable concerns. You're threatening protests, insulting their team members, and generally making yourself look like an unreasonable zealot. Being uncivil doesn't help you get your point across any faster, and there is no excuse for it, especially when Greg is being very civil and reasonable.

Asking Steamworks to be patched out is like asking for any other APIs to be patched out. You're essentially asking for Direct3D/DirectX to be patched out.

It's coming across that very few of the people, who are complaing about Steamworks, actually know what it is. In the same way that an application may use DirectX or the like, or perhaps something like the Unreal Engine, a lot of games now are using Steamworks.

Steamworks isn't just some DRM attached at the end when development is finished.

1. There's an offline mode. You only need to be online the first time you start the game up.

2. Saying that Steam is worst because you can't patch it out is like saying DirectX is bad because it can't be patched out.

Pirating steam games are much harder than pirating other games. Garry's Mod is the most notorious example as the amount of work one has to put into just getting it updated has made the piracy of the game so low that stand-alone versions are outdated days after they're released.

I feel bad for Europeans though. If I recall, the conversion rate between the US dollar and Euro is....1 to 1.

Which is hilarious when you think about it. It would be like if the conversion rate was 1:1 between the US dollar and Euro on Steam.

Dude we have like 3 months to make a difference..Hippie love circle arnt going to save civ 5 from the garbageware bin. I'm sure the mouthpeice of BP is being very civil and reasonable too..being civil and reasonable is what salesmen/PR people do. I'd love to live in Care-o-Lot where we bounced on clouds and hugged eachother but the reality of the situation is we really dont know anything about this game, what we do know has divided the community, and 2k isnt in communication with the devs at any useful level. If you boycoot them and send home maybe someone will say "hey maybe we should listen to these people".

2. Saying oranges are worse because they have seeds is like saying apples are bad because they have seeds.

Pirating is none of my concern. Or, shouldn't be. What is my concern is spending my money on something I want. CIV V is something I want. Steam I have no interest in. Not just no interest, I don't want it on my computer.
