Width. Being pidgin holed sucks.

I'd rather excel at a few things.

Depth. Being far in depth is better than being superficial at many things. There are no jack-of-all-trades anymore; the law of specialization requires that everybody, well, specialize. Rather, people will naturally specialize.

I'd take the second option, as I think I'm average at a lot of things. I used to hate not being particularly good at any one thing (save quizbowl), but then I've come to appreciate it

SCREW ABILITY
Ability sucks, I'd prefer to be completely useless so that others feed me, clothe me, and clean up my feces.

and let you drown in your own urine? ;)

I read the title and thought that this was about sex.

 That took a re-read...

For me there are pro's and cons of both but depth seems preferable. With a very good skill one can do all sorts of things. It gives all sorts of pleasure to work hard and have results that will stand out ahead of the crowd IMO.

Don't you mean something to the order of "choke to death in your own spit" or something?

I'd wager the drowning would occur first :)

This question comes up on the forums of every MMORPG, but it's usually phrased in the form of, "Do you prefer to solo or to group?"

I just want to be a prophet of common sense

The economy is designed to support people with depth, being an expert is a marketable skill.

OTOH, getting acceptable levels of breadth is really less time-intensive than getting marketable levels of depth. It's really easy to go from zero to 60 in most topics, but is really hard to add to that.

In order to make innovations, usually what's needed is excellent depth and breadth. Become an expert and have outside interests which can give you insight into your favourite topic.

The obligatory counterquote:

Robert Heinlen said:
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

The obligatory counterquote:

Specialization is for those that want to earn the big bucks!

Or that want to follow something they love/are good at, and not be distracted by diaper changing crap.
