My friend is being posted to a company in Lehi/Utah for half a year and would like to know a little more about that area (Salt Lake City etc.).

I would like people who know about the area to give some advice.

What to do during free time? Any things to consider before going there? How easy would it be to get to San Francisco from there? Good places to visit? Shopping? Food?

Thanks for the help :D

Isn't it a big Morman community (god help you -- no pun intended).

At least it's probably safe.

The night life is non-existent. Take advantage of the world-class skiing in the surrounding areas. Outdoorsy stuff is your best bet.

As far as Lehi itself, there are such things as Porter's Place (eat a giant burger if you can), provided the place is still there. Ponds, olympic size pool, the rodeo g

Outside of Lehi itself, there's plenty of sightseeing to do in the area, aside from the skiing you can go up to Mt. Timpanogos and tour the caves there. Thanksgiving Point is a great attraction as well. There is a hunting/fishing pond right off I-15 somewhere that has a huge trout pond behind it. 7 Peaks resort is an impressive water park. You can hike Y mountain in Provo, swim/jet ski/etc on Utah lake. There are some nice golf courses in the area, Provo comes to mind. Temple Square in SLC is absolutely beautiful, especially around Christmastime. Tible (sp?) Fork Reservoir is a great place for a picnic. There are horseback riding areas as well, Cascade Springs is another good hiking spot...

There are such interesting places like dollar theaters and Deseret Industries as well.

Hang gliding, flying lessons, helicopter tours of Utah Valley, etc.

Oh, and the night life isn't half bad in SLC, or so I have heard.

There's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

And now, from someone who actually knows the area . . . .
(EDIT: cross-posted with Nylan, who appears to have some actual experience.)

So, I'm assuming your friend is working for Micron? They have a plant that they've finally taken out of mothballs right at the north edge of Lehi/Utah County (near an area called "Point of the Mountain, which is the dividing line between Utah and Salt Lake Counties.

As already noted, Utah County, in general, is largely LDS, so if your friend fancies the typical non-LDS lifestyle, he or she will probably enjoy Salt Lake City, more, and want to live north of Point of the Mountain. Actually, because of the likely work location, your friend will be in easy reach of Salt Lake City from Lehi - maybe a 20-minute drive.

From what I hear, SLC has a reasonable night life. It's not San Francisco, but it's not the Vatican, either.

Places to see and things to do: hiking and skiing are right there: less than an hours drive. In SLC, itself, Temple Square and the adjacent blocks holding the LDS Church office buildings and conference center are must-see sites even for non-LDS (and completely free). The Gateway center, about three blocks west, is a relatively new shopping area, pretty much right next to the arena where the Utah Jazz play (if your friend is into sports).

The Sundance Film Festival is each January, in Park City and SLC. Locals get the opportunity to buy early tickets. However, those who don't care for the movie crowd should stay well away from Park City during that time: it's a gridlocked madhouse.

Down in Utah county, Lehi is where Thanksgiving Point is located, with some shops, gardens, and movie theaters. There is Utah Lake, which is good for some boating and water skiing. Up the (Provo) canyon is another ski resort: Robert Redford's Sundance, and further up are two more reservoirs for boating and fishing. (The Provo River is also a popular site for fly fishing.) And more mountains, mountains, everywhere: Timpanogos Cave, Alpine Springs, the Alpine Loop (a driving path around Mt. Timpanogos). There is a walking/bike path up the Provo Canyon that goes I-don't-know how far up: at least to bridal veil falls and a couple of miles beyond; maybe all the way to Deer Creek Reservoir, at the top of the canyon.

Southern Utah (4-6 hours away) has a number of fantastic national parks, including Zions, Bryce, Canyon Lands, etc., worth some great weekend get aways. Currently, a huge downtown renovation is occurring in SLC (financed by the LDS Church, which owns most of the property), so it's a bit of a mess, but generally speaking, SLC is very clean for a city of its size.

San Francisco is a 10-hour drive away, and a straight shot on the I-80. (I drove that many times, while in college.) Salt Lake International airport also has flights to most places and is at most 40 minutes away.

That's enough to get you started, without writing several pages. If you have more questions, just ask, or PM me. We are a friendly people, and Utah is a beautiful place.

:goodjob: great info here...thanks, will keep the pm offer in mind (after all it isn't me who is traveling there)

The only thing I knew about SLC was the winter Olympics, so it should have plenty of snow and skiing opportunities (my friend hasn't ever seen snow before  )

I understand the Lehi area is booming right now, as far as rapid development is concerned.

I'm on the record several times as not being a very big fan of Utah. However, I will give SLC its props. The city has changed a little bit since the 2002 games I think, (both demographically, and as an actual city), and there is a lot more going on. In addition to the killer outdoors activities (awesome skiing!!), there are some pretty good resteraunts and historical sites. The University of Utah is right in SLC, and they often have cool speakers come in that the community is invited to, as well as good musical events.

If you're looking for a good bar scene though, I dont think Utah is the place. I think a lot of those cities are fairly musically dead.

I'm not a big fan of the Provo/Odgen area. The towns kinda remind me of big strip malls, and (sorry Stegyre!), I think a lot of the people who live there are a *little* nuts. If you end up living in Utah county (sorry, I can't remember which county Lehi is actually in), at least you're close to SLC :)

A lot of the national parks in Southern Utah are flat out breathtaking, 'specially Zion. Driving to Las Vegas, or San Fran is also not impossible for a long weekend.

One thing that might be a little worrisome is the cost of living in Utah, which appears to have gone up an awful lot. I don't know if thats because of the water, or all the rapid development thats happening everywhere or what, but its something to think about.

Meh, there's plenty to do in Utah Valley. The only thing is they're mostly family friendly, idk if that's what your friend is looking for.

As far as big names in music, they come through SLC every now and then. Not much on a local level though.

So yeah, there is more than plenty to do around Lehi, it's just different than most places, except for SLC to a degree. I've been there I don't know how many times and I still haven't done everything.
