Aelf's thread reloaded

Parthenon isn't as useful for a philo civ though. It only provides a cumulative 50% bonus to the base 100% bonus so it goes from 100 --> 150. 10 GPP goes to 25 instead of 20. I don't think that's worth burning a GE. I would settle him and take the hammer + beaker bonus at this point. It'll give you a better shot at the marble wonders anyways. The AI generally doesn't prioritize the Parthenon so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Agree. I think I'm pretty good favorite to get both the parth and Glib.

I don't usually do this but I'm thinking I'll put the HE in the capital along with the later Oxford. I've already got a settled GG, I'm leaning to settling the eng, and and it's pretty good production.
Maybe put the NE in Persepolis.
If I go that way I guess it's better to put the Glib in Persepolis and the Parth in Cahokia, instead of the other way around. Have to look at that in more detail--better for GP generation that way but better academy wise to have Glib in capital.

The parthenon will produce GA pollution so if it's the only wonder in a city, you're pretty much locked in to getting at least 2-3 GA over the course of the game. In vanilla/warlords, this was terrible but with the revamped golden age, having spare GA may not be so bad. 2 GA + one other random GP will give you two golden ages.

If you put the parthenon in a production city and it is the only source of gpp in that city then as long as you have a strong gpfarm at most you should get 1 ga, which can be integrated into a golden age as you mention.

OK here we go:

I decide to go for the part in a non-gp generator.
Settle the engineer.
Build the Glib in Persepolis--that will be my GP farm.

Freddie settles a couple of cities:

Civ4ScreenShot0089.jpg

and

Civ4ScreenShot0090.jpg

We research math to time with our chops.

Freddie sends a force after the barb city to the N--we'll use them to help us take it.

Civ4ScreenShot0091.jpg

I decide to try for the tao lightbulb.

50 BC--we build the Glib in Persepolis.

Civ4ScreenShot0092.jpg

We also get a scientist.
I decide to save him for the tao lightbulb.

25 BC we get the Parth.

Civ4ScreenShot0093.jpg

25 AD We raze the barb city of Ainu. While it's not a bad spot, we really can't afford it now and I want to get the Moai city up and running.

I decide to put the HE in Susa. Unfortunately I erred earlier in settling the GG in the capital.

25 AD we lose Tao so the scientist builds academy.

125 IW in. We have iron.

Question is do we now head out to optics?
I decide yes.

Freddie will now trade with us--we pick up alpha.

Civ4ScreenShot0098.jpg

He also has currency so we may be able to sell him stuff.

200 AD we get another GS for an academy in Persopolis.

We pick up some gold for the nearly completed Statue of Zeus--I deliberately didn't finish it.

We make another trade with Freddie:

Civ4ScreenShot0100.jpg

I decide against finishing Chicken and figure I can use the $ more.

We pop gold at Persepolis!

Civ4ScreenShot0102.jpg

We we've certainly had the breaks in our favor this game.

We also get tin:

Civ4ScreenShot0103.jpg

Optics in 600--CS next.
Another GS born--we start to cottage spam the capital.
Another GS.

The AP goes Christian.

Freddie get Chicken Pizza--well maybe I should have finished it.

Freddie steals drama--good to see the AI doing something with its espionage.

We meet the other continent and make a trade:

Civ4ScreenShot0108.jpg

I get a GP from Susa--unfortunately it's an artist.

We meet another AI and trade:

Civ4ScreenShot0110.jpg

Freddie steals compass.

We meet another AI and trade:

Civ4ScreenShot0111.jpg

At 1000 AD we have met the other continent and nobody is too advanced.
Relations are good all around:

Civ4ScreenShot0112.jpg

Must be another civ on an island somewhere.

I traded with all the overseas AI immediately--this risks the - for trading with enemies but gets an immediate +4. I think it's somewhat exploitive but I do it.

Should be little difficulty here: lib-astro then take Freddie out with rifles with possibly a detour to pick up the Statue of Liberty.

Great game so far.

could you post a state of the world next. show the trade menu and stuff. easyer to see what you shold do from this point on.

At a point where everyone has alphabet, it would only be useful for drama.
Monarchy I might trade for if I could use it to broker feudalism. You must be pretty desperate for gold.

OK-the state of the world:

Civ4ScreenShot0113.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0114.jpg

Things are well in hand.

We'll be at lib before 1100--not quick but considering we got writing around 700BC and did little tech trading (had to self research IW, Math, the optics line) not too shabby.
Shows the power of the 'mids and settled GP.

To be honest I think the rest of the game is trivial, and many paths lead to success.

One path: lib-astro (trade)-dem (Statue of liberty)-rifling (draft-goodbye Freddie).

Another is hurry to rifling and dispose of Freddie.

??????
At the point when I traded for monarchy and alpha Freddie was my only contact. While neither was urgent, both are necessary for later techs and we got to trade with the backwards AI w/o getting WFYABTA with the more advanced other continent.

I think the tech trades are good. Should be a simple wrap-up with this game. Astro first will boost your economy. If you can get economics before Freddie gets too advanced, I would divert for free market before going nationalism/rifling to take out Fred. I would skip democracy until after the war though. You won't hit emancipation unhappiness that soon in the game so I'd concentrate on the short term goal of taking Fred out. Then fix your economy. The overseas trade routes will compensate the economy for the time being.

OK- I play another set and unfortunately my writeup gets deleted before I can post it but from memory:

The plan:
Things are looking good. We have more or less tech parity with the other continent, and we rate to pull ahead once we get lib, do some trading, then get the economy boost from astro.
Relations are good and we should be able to easily beat Freddie to rifles and draft/rifle rush him.
I think I can afford a detour to Democracy to pick up the Statue of Liberty.

So: first we pick up circumnavigation

Civ4ScreenShot0126.jpg

Then we meet the last AI--isolated Monte and make a trade:

Civ4ScreenShot0128.jpg

When we're close to lib I trade Education:

Civ4ScreenShot0132.jpg

and

Civ4ScreenShot0133.jpg

Liberalism comes in:

Civ4ScreenShot0135.jpg

Astronomy really gives us a good boost to trade as well as allows a bunch of resource trades.

I see that nobody has banking so I decide to beeline economics for the merchant. I delay the civic change to save a turn but it costs me a -1 with Saladin as I finally get a religion and he asks me to convert.

I've also built a few jumbos as Freddie has knights, but my scouts don't reveal any concentration on his part.

I don't MM too carefully so I'm sure a close examination will reveal plenty of weakness there.

We made a civic change:

Civ4ScreenShot0138.jpg

At 1180 the world is a peaceful place, and we have a tech lead.

An empire overview:

the capital:

do you have oxford in the capital? 300+ beakers is nice at that point in the game. looks very winnable. good job

You're doing a lot of building. When are you going to kill Frederick? Are you going for cavalry, because he has chichen itza, and that might be a little painful.

You're doing a lot of building. When are you going to kill Frederick? Are you going for cavalry, because he has chichen itza, and that might be a little painful.
It's going to be a globe/draft rifle thing. I'm not expecting him to tech too well so likely build trebs then go chem-steel after rifling then a mass upgrade.
He won't offer much resistance.

OK-to continue.
I've just gotten economics and the merchant.

The Plan: a mixed game where we head out to democracy and pick up the SOL then rifling-steel. We'll take out Freddie with a mixed army of drafted rifles and cannon. We'll build mostly trebs and then spend a few turns upgrading them before the assault. There's a good argument against the democracy detour--it does delay rifling and adds risk to the war but we're competing against the other continent and I think we're far enough ahead here to be able to get away with it.

In the mean time we won't build many units--we'll build infra and grow our cities. The units we can build now with the exception of trebs are pretty expensive to upgrade and we'll do just fine with the rifles.

Monte comes asking for tribute. While he's unlikely to be able to do much to me I do want to keep trading with him so he can have it.

Civ4ScreenShot0142.jpg

I research Printing press-nat-con-democracy.

We get some cash from a trade mission and settle another scientist.

We found a new city on an island. That'll actually be a pretty good investment as it'll open up a domestic overseas trade route with all of our cities despite its additional cost.

Civ4ScreenShot0144.jpg

rifling comes in 1410.

The tech screen:

Civ4ScreenShot0145.jpg

We keep pulling farther ahead.

So now we start the military buildup:
we pop our artist for a GA. It's always a good time to trigger a GA when you have mid or late game civic changes coming up.

We make a civic change:

Civ4ScreenShot0146.jpg

and start drafting.
We finally get some use out of the protective trait as our riflemen get CG1 and drill 1. They can also take the all important pinch as a promo.

Astro is not a monopoly so I leave a few units to defend my coast in the unlikely event of an overseas attack. The new city I don't plan to defend.

A GS is born and settled in the capital.

On the last turn of our GA we make another civic change to PS in preparation for war. I decide to take emancipation as well. While it would be nice to stay in slavery to whip buildings with the german pop, by the time we get the war started, cities out of revolt we'll be getting some unhappy that we really don't want from emancipation. Better to just take it now and save a turn.

Civ4ScreenShot0147.jpg

At 1500 steel is in and a look at the tech screen reveals the Justinian is basically the competion. He's a tad behind us in tech, the rest are further behind.

Civ4ScreenShot0148.jpg

We get an interesting resolution:

Civ4ScreenShot0149.jpg

and Justinian defies it.

At 1525 we have the SOL and we are ready to go with 2 attack forces.

Bismark doesn't have gunpowder, so this shouldn't be much of a challenge.

The southern force in Persepolis:

Civ4ScreenShot0150.jpg

And a smaller northern force will start with Bremen.
