Afghan rap: Sign of the impending Apocolypse?

Isn't that the whole goal of invading Afghanistan and Iraq ? "Teach" them "western" values? Now if we begin to get picky about which of these values they adopt...
"democracy is okay but not rap"...

Rap isn't *my* western value, and I doubt it can really be considered a western value, and the goal of invading Afghanistan was not to teach them western values.

Why? Have you never heard music you dislike?

I've heard music that I dislike - but I don't label entire genres as "horsehockey" - I give each artist a chance to prove him/herself to me, no matter what the genre may be.

I generally hate most of the country music out there, yet I'm not going to dismiss the entire genre - by giving individual artists a chance I've actually found a couple country songs that I like.

That's why I think it's shortsighted to dismiss an entire genre - You're just assuming that any sort of music labelled as rap or hip-hop is going to suck due to your preconceptions about the genre.

It's a lot cheaper and easier these days to expand and maintain the infrastructure needed for mobile coverage than old-fashioned landlines, so a lot of "third world" areas have been going straight to mobiles -- including many places that have never had landlines.
I'm aware of that, but I was just surprised in general that there were a million phones to begin with period. After all, Afghainstan is one of the poorest countries on earth.

This is a silly statement. The people in this thread who stated they dislike rap simply dislike rap.

Note the quotes in my posts. The closest thing there is to actually writing: sarcasm.

But obviously not good enough :(

This is just crazy. When I hear a rap "song" on the radio, or tv, or movie, it sounds like crap. If that's your notion of dismissing an entire genre, then whatevers. There really should be a shrugging emoticon. I'll just use these: :shake::hammer2:

My mistake.

And mobile phones have text messaging which is very sparing
on bandwidth so that even poorer people can afford it.

So why say "There is no good hip-hop out there" when all you've heard is mainstream "c"rap ?

If all I heard of rock music was The Goo Goo Dolls, Simple Plan, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Nickelback, then I might be tempted to say that "all rock sucks"... but I wouldn't - since there might be rock out there that I would like. and there is!

Maybe that's just me - but I don't dismiss entire genres based on a couple select songs - mostly mainstream - which usually suck anyway.

It's also tempting to say that "All chick flicks suck", but there have been a couple decent ones.

Funny story: I was walking in Nashville, TN; once and a "homeless" guy asked me for a dollar. He was carrying a cell phone.

Well duh, he can't have a landline if he's homeless.

Who the hell is dumb enough to listen to the radio anyway?

Get off your duff and go to a record store. I did, changed my mind about hip-hop forever.

Ahhh more misery and suffering

If you thought a civil war and ocuupation by the soviet union was bad then this is without hyperbole worse

reggea in Hebrew... have you been watching too much MTV? (They had this Jewish reggea artist, and were playing his music not because they thaught it was good, but because he was Jewish).

Let them listen to more music styles and then let them chose what they prefer to hear. And whatevere the choice; respect it.

I wish Indian cultural influence in the region would increase . It would help the country regain its liberal character , and also help it economically . India has helped the Afghan government in a number of ways , mostly by undertaking joint infrastructure projects . Two Indian engineers have even been killed by the remainint Taliban while working in Afghanistan . India has always been a friend of Afghanistan - then the Taliban came in and ruined everything .

God bless the development of earplug technology during this era of rap/hip-hop dominance.

I retire, to my 80s music...
