African Javelineer (9 May 2006)

Great unit, Plotinus. Second unit and you're already making really great stuff.:)

Thanks again for the comments, everyone. I'm glad it passes muster even with the more critical members of our community!

Quite nice. :) I trust we won't be seeing any more Maya atlatlmen running around in Central Africa?

Damn right! This unit should at least fit in a little better.

As for javelin supplies, I don't really know, but I suspect mrtn is right. I certainly can't imagine anyone lugging more of them around than this unit. In fact, I suspect that in real life a warrior such as this would probably have only one javelin, and once he's thrown it use a knife or something, but I'm not animating all that!

Legionaries of the Late Republic and Early Empire often carried two pila, with one sometimes being lighter than the other. Standard tactics called for a Roman soldier to throw his pilum (both if there was time) at the enemy just before charging to engage with his gladius.
So if the Romans had two, I suspect other javelineers didn't have many more.

Except, I suppose, that the Roman Legionary wasn't a skirmisher per se. I imagine the earlier velites would have carried more than two javelins. If I were to imagine myself as a javelineer, I think once I ran out of javelins I would bugger off pretty quick, only using my knife in the direst of self-defence situations! But then again, my commanding officer might tell me different...

Whatever, I don't care, I just love the unit. If a theologian can do this, what's to keep a philosopher from trying too? Now I want to make units... (don't nobody hold der breath, tho!)
