AG5 - Honorable Space Race

The honorable rule says that a captain of a ship won't risk the lives of his crew and therefore always should land in save waters. The rules are not about adjusting your your play to that of the AI. It is about keeping promises and ... well just being honorable.

AG5 - 70BC – 1ST the turn count looks awry so I will play until it looks right.
I rush both the Seoul and Pyong markets for around 550g. Lets get those cities up to speed. America nad China are still at war, so good. We can build! We are weak to everyone and a scientific nation, IMO, can not be strong and protect our secrets if we do not have a military. I switch Wonsan to horse. Chonju making 4g from lib to horse. Hyangsan, our FP, has workers building a road. I’m chopping forest to build the market and then more buildings. Seoul is the only thing close to rioting so the rushed market will help matters. Suwan and Ulsan in the SW need chops too. Repub is here and we need our cities in the core in shape. 26 workers looks pretty good, nice work compared to before guys. My hat is off to you for this. On the international front it looks like Abe has the early lead so I look forward to taking Detroit and St. Louis. Taegu has a galley ready to meet the Mayan. I’m looking N of Greece and not seeing anything. I will turn the galley around though and have a second gander at this so-called sighting. Where is it?

IT – Abe offers us a ROP and alliance against China. I almost thought he was the human and I was the AI there for a sec. Good thing he didn’t keep coming back with multiple offers increasing the gold for it or I might have fallen for that one.
Seoul – Market> Harbor. Looked at maybe Brax and temple but the gold from a harbor is nice and workers won’t be back for awhile.
Taegu – Our Mayan meeting galley> Library. Cheap expansion and we are at 2 pop so a rush will be in order here. Take note.
P’yong- Market> Barracks for military. Check that, in the spirit of the SG I go library. Then we can go military. We are smart and will use others, for now, to do our fighting.
Cheju – Harbor> Horse. Library and barracks in place.

50BC – Go and meet Smoke-Jaguar, who is annoyed as expected, and lo and behold, he has mono. The Americans have it too. We need more wars because education is next. If this was a SP I would get world war one flying right now to get those guys on the invention/gunpowder path. I’m thinking war against the Mayas with Americas help. But, not this game. We are builders for now and sitting in 4th in pop, GNP and land area. Our surplus pop in Seoul is what is causing us to be 10% lux tax. My bad on the harbor call above. We swap to temple and get a scientist. Lux to 0% and we’re at 77gpt as compared to 44 when I started. Just had a quick look if I can deal mono next turn and no one has any real cash.

IT – We master the secrets of Mono. That’s the ancient ages for ya’. We can get a total of 28g for it. I won’t debase our scientists for that.

30BC – I uncover the NE border with our galley. I don’t know how you guys could have seen that from this save???? I wa going in and out from the sea on both personal experience and your hunch! And there it was.

IT – Kaesong who I had switched to worker> Lib

10BC – The American settler pair continues to trespass through our northern lands. Seoul goes to settler to get another city on the western landmass. P’yongpang rushes market for 104g saving 4 turns. 375g in the bank. Doing 79gpt. No new techs known. Still chump change on the aftermarket. There is a piece of sea 3 tiles away in the NE butif I can’t get across, I’ll save before attempt, I’ll have to reload. I’m 1-2 turns from the attempt. It is definitely sea the though

IT – China and America are still at it, as evidenced by a war in front of me. Tose heathens. Don’t they know science can solve these troubles they have.
P’yongpang-Lib> Brax
Paegam(most NW city next to china)-Brax>Temple for culture balance.

10AD – Haeju goes to lib from temple. Hangsan is ripe for a 20g market before rioting. Paegam is growing out of control with 2 FP and game. It has a scientist now. I work the workers and then save prior to moving the NE galley. Have to reload. It’s a NO-GO. I reload, zig and zag and get into Grecian waters.

IT – America wins a visual skirmish.
Seoul-Settler>Temple for the 3-1-3 pop resident there. Pusan-Horse>Horse. H’yangsan-Market> Temple. In’chon-Horse> Court in 20. Losing some cash here. Chonju builds a reg horse. My weed>Lib

30AD – Work the workers, save, and again I can’t get across in 2. Will look further north after reload.

IT – Apologize to Mao for trespassing.

50AD – Moving workers for chops to build libs. Accidentally left a galley in the sea N of the southern hemishere town of Liverpool. It is not a suicide galley. It is a stupid captain who will be reprimanded when he gets to port.

Primarily building, no new tech has reared it’s head. Nothing to really gain for selling. Ultimately boring. However, this is the life of the true gentleman. Boring yet extremely comfortable. Ther is a settler on partial GOTO to the western landmass. I don’t think next leader will see any movement but I can’t be sure. He’ll light up to continue. Chops are proceeding and I never got the workers in teams. Loks like we build until attacked. Barrack’library towns should bild swords/horses to be ready and transfer them to the front. They will soon be needed.

Good work barbslinger. Things may get more difficult when it turns out that we don't have all the resources needed. I don't know if it is Snoopy which made the other continent so visible. But now we can even see a border on the other side.

As I said: I would go full Printing Press when Theology is around. We have the money and it can ensure our tech lead. Also, the next buildings we want are iniversities and banks.

EDIT: Barbslinger, I don't understand your loading and saving with that curragh. We have a real galley fairly close that can cross it easily soon :hmm: In fact, I don't like to see us saving and loading. We just have to be more careful! One move in and if it doesn't look right->go back. Please look at the previous page of this report and you see where we can safely cross.

Sorry this is gonna be a quick paste and run..

Preturn - MM all cities to squeeze a little extra out of most of them.

IBT - That drunken captain that Barbslinger let wander into the sea, is attacked by sea serpents and is lost in treachorous waters.

Turn 01 ( 70AD) - Cheju Horseman -> market. Tokch'on warrior -> worker. Workers slash and burn their way accross our continent.

IBT - Maya are building Leonardos. Now both Greece and Maya have invention.

Turn 02 ( 90AD) - P'yongyang barracks -> Pike. More workering.

IBT - We get Invention from the TGL. Greeks are building Sistine.

Turn 03 ( 110AD) - So I start our research on Gunpowder. If the Greeks have Theology they will sell it soon enough. Fortify a horse in Pusan. I dont like empty cities [mad]

IBT - Hittites complete the Statue of Zeus, wow, that was a little late, Knight be around soon.

Turn 04 ( 130AD) - Seoul temple -> harbour. Hyansan temple -> barracks. I dont understand why we are running at 1 scientist research, up to 50%, -7gpt. We have 663 gold.

Turn 05 ( 150AD) - P'yongyang pike -> trebuchet. Taejon Library -> Courthouse. Haeju library -> barracks.

Turn 06 ( 170AD) - Wonsan marketplace -> Library! Pusan horseman -> horseman. Sariwon library -> courthouse. Ch'ongfu founded starts pike.

Turn 07 ( 190AD) - Hyangsan barracks -> Trebuchet.

IBT - We get Theology from the TGL.

Turn 08 ( 210AD) - Seoul Harbor -> Cathedral. Pyongyang trebuchet -> trebuchet. Namp'o pikeman -> market. Galley heads accross the water, we meet the Americans! :p

Turn 09 ( 230AD) - Hyangsan trebuchet -> trebuchet.

Turn 10 ( 250AD) - Kaesong Library -> pike. Suwon market -> library!

We get gunpowder from TGL next turn, while we also research it. Wo'd have thought? Anyway. I do like self research, but would rather have tried PP, which is ignored often by AI.

IHT: Things look nice. I'm in for 10 builder turns, and thats always good. I switch to Printing Press (10) since Gunpowder will come in next thanks to TGLb.
T1: Gunpowder, but no salt. Hyangsan: T'Bucket->Cathedral. P'yongyang: T'bucket->Cathedral. We meet the Hitties.
T2: We learn chivalry. Chinje: Library->Temple
T3: I have to knock lux up to 10. It gives us -43gpt, though. I put sci down to 40, making it only -14gpt, but, this makes printing press due in 10. I disband a curragh to save 2gpt. Ulsan: Market -> Temple
T4: Chenju: Market -> Aqueduct. Paegam: Temple -> Courthouse Lux deals expire, Mao and Liz. I trade them both Chivalry to renew.
T5: Wonsan: Library -> Aqueduct.
T6: China and America come to peace
T7: We learn Education. TGLb goes dead. Pusan: Knight -> Temple. Suwon: Library -> University. Haeju: Rax -> Courthouse.
T8: Kaesong: Pike -> Market.
T9: Taegu: Library->Courthouse. Inch'on: Courthouse -> Library.
T10: Printing Press. Astronomy in 16. Contact w/ English and 50g for contact with the Germans. Germans are backwards. That wraps things up here.

IHT: Good to see that we have Printing Press at first. Even better is that Greece has 1500 gold to spare :) We have no saltpeter, from the map that is revealed I see that England has two. But it is not for sale.
Greece gives us 1280 gold for Printing Press and contact with the Germans. The Maya give 154 gold and 26 gpt for PP and contact with America.
I build an embassyin Hattusas (Hittites) for 120 gold. The city has 6 entertainers and it's starving :hmm: An embassy with the Maya reveals that they have Sistine in 19. An embassy in Berlin is 43 gold.

I switch Seoul from Cathedral to Sistine, as a prebuild for Smith, Magellan.... Research to Banking at 90% (in 7).

IT: P'yongyang, Hyangsan: university->knight.

Turn 1 (370 AD) Banking now in 5.

IT: Ulsan: temple->university. The Chinese start the Knights Templar. The Greeks start Copenicus.

Turn 2 (380 AD) Only the Greeks know Astronomy atm.

IT: Cheju: aquaduct->university.

Turn 3 (390 AD) The Maya have knowledge of Astronomy as well.

IT: Chonju: pike->courthouse.

Turn 4 (400 AD) Science to 80%, banking still in 2.

IT: Tokch'on: library->worker. Maya start Cops.

Turn 5 (410 AD) No other knows Banking at the moment

IT: Banking comes in. Research to Economy at 90%. Smith will give us a Golden Age. Wonsan: aquaduct->university. Pusan: temple->library. Inch'on: library->marketplace. Chong'fu: pike->library. Germany starts Leo.

Turn 6 (420 AD) knights are switched to banks. Imho our order of buildings are now Library, university, market, bank, units.
Greece found the secret of Music Theory. I sell Banking for Astronomy and 1080 gold. The Maya can only give Music Theory and 20 gpt. Not enough in my eyes.

IT: England demands Gems and I say no. They back down. Greece and Maya start Bach.

Turn 7 (430 AD) The Maya have Banking. I should have taken the 20 gpt :(

IT: The Germans want us out of their lands. They also start the Knights Templar.

Turn 8 (440 AD) Irrigation towards the SW part of our empire is started. I give Greece 155 goold for Gems.

IT: Taejon: courthouse->aquaduct. Paegam: courthouse->university.

Turn 9 (450 AD) Greece knows Chemistry now.

IT: Pusan: library->market.

Turn 10 (460 AD) Science to 70%. Economy still in 2.

The Hittites have Chemistry but lack Banking and Astronomy :) I seel Banking and Astronomy to the Hittites for Chemistry and 12 gpt.

I suggest to keep Economics secret to all until we have Smith and our Golden Age. We can check every turn if one of the AI is coming close to discovering it themselves. Their price for the tech will then be lower than usual. We should try to find cities with harbors on the other continent, which will allow us to trade with them.

This may be going smoothly at the moment, but what happens when we appear to be lacking vital resources? This could still turn into a difficult game.

Example: we can't get a Hwach'a because we lack Saltpeter.

AG5 – No preturn adjustments due to game being saved at 460AD.
[1] 460BC – With our ultimate goal being space race I was wondering why we were not making an attempt at Copernicus and/or Newton’s? No mention in prior logs but I’m thnking they would both be nice to have. Those would be wonderful in a high dollar city. So I swap Hyangsan over. It has 123 shields in it and with our GA coming up perhaps we can get over the top. It’s 20 turns out right now. If not it can swap to palace build and then go Newtons which will be the next target. Besides they are building Copes in 2nd-3rd rate towns. I get a deal with Abe on spices for 440g thinking I can lower lux slider to 0%. I can but then Seoul with it’s 12 pop is the only unhappy town. So we get extra happiness for score because I’m not swapping to a scientist and slow Seoul down on Smiths. We have 12 turns until it comes in. There is too much of a cascade that could happen so no trading of Smiths is advised. We lose our dyes in 3 and our incense in 4. I also drop some cash to rush some courts. That will pay itself back over time due to increased revenue.
IT – Nampo – Ct>Market, Chonju-Ct>Mkt, Haeju-Ct>Temple, no market. We can rush a temple for happy later.
[2] 470AD – Workers are roading hills to I presume mine after near Pusan. Even swapping for zero growth to use hills there are hills remaining not used. I’m sending these workers to chop/irrigate Chonju next door. It is sorely lacking growth and developed tiles. I saw the build order that we want to try and adhere to but we should have a worker factory somewhere and one town devoted to military. Slider drops to 50% in anticipation of economics. Abe has a worker for sale for 120g, I take the 5gpt and 25g deal.
IT – Econ > Physics heading for ToG. Swap to smiths in 10.
[3] 480AD – Rush the Pyong bank to get it started on prebuild for Newtons. I’m bringing some workers down to turn Kaesong into a worker factory. Rush another court in Taegu so it can get on some workers.
IT – Taegu – Ct>Worker, Pyongyang-Bank>Palace for Newtons, Sariwon-Non rushed court>Worker. Maya complete Knights Templar. They have been at war with Hittites since I started and the power graph shows them slowly losing. They may rebound now. We lose dyes but cities won’t riot so I hold off for a while, if I trade at all. I would rather have the gems for incense from China due to possible trade route break with England.
[4] 490AD – Nothing of note.
IT – Germany declares on the Maya. Greeks complete Sistenes. Suwon – Uni>Bank. Chinje-Worker>Worker.
[5] 500AD – Some chops complete. Saltpeter and Dyes for Gems and banking from England, Incense for education from Mao. He wouldn’t give any of his 14g cash. Upgrade a pike for 90g. Greeks have a wad o’ cash and will give Music and 1120g. Lets check back next turn to see if he is working on it.
IT- Ulsan – Uni>Bank, Sariwon-Worker>Market, Tokch’on (tundra city)- Worker>worker for a while.
[6] 510AD – Abe has Democracy. I can see Alexs cash disappearing already. He still offers 1120g for econ. He’s not working on it. Workers a working. Paegam is working a University but it is going to run into happy trouble soon and I think a market would be better because the 50% increase in cash gives the same effect as a uni’s 50% increase. It still has 9 turns and grows in 4 with its floodplains so next leader can decide. Hurry Kaesong market for 52g
IT – Taegu- Wkr>Wkr. I recant the Kaesong worker factory idea with Taegu’s 2 cows it can make workers for a while. Kaesong builds a market and goes to uni. Cheju university is opened and builds a bank.
[7] 520AD – Workers doing what they do best. Alex was 1 turn behind Abe for Democracy because he still has his cash. Everyone else is near broke.
IT – Wonson – Uni>Bank, Chinje- Worker> Worker. English complete Sun Tzu. Massive cascade ensues. The Maya move a caravel towards our western holdings, still in his waters.
[8] 530AD – Mursilis has freed some cash up because now he offers 39gpt and music for econ. No thanks until 1 turn left on Smiths. Alex still same offer.
IT – Taegu-Worker>Worker
[9] 540AD - Rush one more courthouse. Workers going at it. Offers for econ the same with Hittites adding 6g. Mayans are now annoyed and the caravel has moved towards our western tip of our western holdings. Is he thinking of declaring on our weak ass’s? He can only offer 7g for any trading and I’m not giving up anything for that pittance. He is already at war with Germany and Hittites. I hurry the market at In’chon for 36g so it can get on knight production. We are sorely lacking military and he looks to have turned the corner in the war because is power is up-ticking now. We’ll see. In the meantime I’m moving horses over there and will swap a market for brax to upgrade to knights if needed. Also he only has 2 turns left on a 26gpt deal with us. Need to renegotiate that when due.
IT – Whew! Alex wants econ. I take a chance and no declaration. It’s getting tight around here. Maya strool CCW around our island. Barracks can be rushed there if need be. Science to 40% for Physics next turn. Pusan – Mrkt>Uni, In’chon-Market>Uni, Chong’fu-Ct>Lib.
[10] 550AD – Move military and workers. Same deals on the table.

3 turns left on Smiths. I would hate to lose it to a cascade so I think we have to hold on. We have 149g and +89gpt. I thought about investigating but it is cost prohibitive with all the cities working wonders. Hopefully we last out 3 turns and then trade econ for big bucks.

Also, I wanted to play this and the AWE I have going but for some reason my DSL was acting up. It's fine this morning. I tried for 2.4 hours to download the save. the pic is after 2 hours. Those estimated times left were stuck there forever. It took 1 hour just to get the upload screen. Bummer.

EDIT: Our troops really are spread thin. I don't think we can afford a war at the moment. Not that we are allowed to be aggressive :)

Strange that we still haven't found a harbor on the other continent. Now we have to keep lux at 10%...

With physics comingin next turn we have a nice opportunity to bankrupt the AI. Then we can research full speed ahead to ToG and perhaps some other trading will present itself. The next 2 leaders should have a ball with the GA and getting to the next age where we should take the lead for good. As our big cities finish banks, unis we should go to military production of knights for cavs. China is looking really weak and ripe for a takeover and palace jump. If that happens then this game is in the bag except for not having salt. Be sure to renegotiate for that. Once we hit the next age we should be able to leave the AI in the dust. It's nice to see the dog pile on Maya but I would cave if he gets antsy.

Barbslinger: we can only take over China when THEY declare war. I don't see a reason to move our palace to that core, with the new functionality of the FP. Palace JUMP is not allowed. We have to build one brick by brick or with a leader. I don't think it's worth it.

I agree with the fact that we can really push ahead with the GA (and never look back).

Honorable as always. As to moving the palace it is a dream of continental superiority. If China gets around to declaring I see no reason not to move it if we take a few cities NW of us. It would straighten out the corruption to make more cash/science producing cities and what do we need an army for if we pop a leader? 20 cavs will hold our borders fine and once RP comes in we're home free. Just hold our borders.

It's worth a thought, but let's remember that we are building Cops and Newton close to the palace (or so we hope). When we move it to Beijing these wonders will be less valuable (corruption). Certainly Seoul is not the best place for a capital. Pusan would be better imho.
