AG9 - OCC Conquest (Monarch)

Ag9-700AD, Short term plans, Get an army, Medium term plans Wipe the greeks.
With Ansars due in three I switch the Medieval build over to Horseman.

710 I let the cats play with the greeks while waiting for troops to get into position.

730 We have Chivalry, and I start a min science on Invention. I would rather use our money upgrading any surviving horses.

Two medievals make the battle for Rhodes short and sweet.
Two horsemen makes the battle for Ephesus short and sweet as well.
We lose a medieval in the battle for Herakleia, and we now own four cities,
and Uthman makes an army, soon to be filled with our glorious Ansars. :band: :hammer:

My thanks for the great setup, and rest assured I will sacrifice a beer to the RNG.

Hmm, our economy is not the best, as when we go 10% science and no lux, we have zero income.

740AD We kill a greek longbow who came to menace us.

IBT: Germany makes a city on right next to our gems, and we lose that lux.
We complete our first self built Ansar, and this together with the two horsemen I upgraded will be the army.
Greeks got Chivalry as well, they start Knights Templar. This is a wonder I actually want us to have, but I
could have a couple of Ansars instead. I will have to think about it.

750 We can get Knights Templar in 12 turns. This is four Ansars. I think the extra units will pay for themselves in the next war.
For now, I reason that the army will be enough to snatch the greeks, and we will have the Ansar production back on line when the Greek campaign is over.

I am at -5 gpt now that I reconfigured for shields.

IBT: Greeks tie up a city building Sistines.

760 I watch in glee as our army pillage a clean and pristine path through the greek lands, heading for a coastal sweep. ( While our Medievals with pike support go for the two big cities in the middle. )
The army ends with a flawless victory against a Hoplite, and we are in our GA. Income jumps from -10 to +7, Knights templar goes from 12 to 8 turns.
I try to get Invention from Germany in exchange for Monotheism, but they wont deal at any price I can offer.

IBT: I see the germans escort a leader home by the Greek capitol.

770 I build an Ivory colony, and we can lower lux to zero again, and we make 16 gpt.
I spend the last of our gold, upgrading our remaining horses to Ansars.
The army does its job, and Thessalonika is razed. Army is wounded though, and will heal a bit.
I spot barbcamps, and I realize a well placed Ansar could generate quite a bit of money busting camps.

IBT: Germany is insulted by Chivalry against Invention. :(

790 Hmm, what happened to 780 ??. Seige of Thessalonika reveals there are three Hoplites defending.
I am having some problems with the last Hoplite who retreats the elite horseman, kills our Elite swordsman, and heavily wounded our veteran Medieval.
I realize min science will take too long, and I save that money instead. We will have to use the :hammer: to get our techs.
Army is almost healed, but considering the difficulty in getting it, I will let it fight only when HPs are almost full.

810, Army is healed, and starts another pillaging move towards the next city. Our SoD is approaching the Greek capitol.
Siege will start in three turns.

820 Our army meets a particularly stubborn Hoplite, and redlines. Delphi is razed though, and hopefully the Trebuchet we captured will keep counterattackers away while we heal.
The Indians continue to be pathetic, and cannot recapture the city Germany took from them, and they make no progress at all against Greece.

IBT: Some barbarians appears from out of the fog, and kill a couple of workers heading home from the Greek front.

830 MOvement

IBT: An actual counter. A longbow emerges from Athens, and impale itself on our pikeman.
We complete Knights Templar, and I start building Ansars. Hmm, We can build Statue of Zeus in 6 turns. It is tempting, but I build Ansars anyway.

850 The siege of Athens starts, but all Catapults are ineffectual. Get two barbarian camps to get some more money.

IBT: One of our Medievals dies to a counter out of Athens, and it is do or die this turn I suspect, unless I want our forces to melt away. Withdrawal is not an option

860 Our army raze Sparta, and Greeks are a 4CC. Cats reveal there are at least four Hoplites in Athens, and my plans for razing it will rest a while. I will raze the rest of Greece instead, and pillage around Athens.

880 It is with great sadness I realize I have to disband a captured Trebuchet.

900 The SoD has reached Knossos, and bombardment reveals three regular Hoplites defending. This is better odds, and I risk our Medievals on a charge.
We lose one Medieval, but Knossos is razed. Our SoD needs healing now though. It is a good thing our Ansars have started reaching the fron in numbers now though.

I have left movement on the Army for the next player to decide on.
You can get peace with Greece this turn, and reduce him to a 1CC as well as get both his techs in the deal. I recommend we take this deal if possible.
( I have not checked how many turns we have left on the deal with India for MA. )

Germany have somehow grown to a monster, in spite of figting Indias Elephants. We might want to turn on India, and liberate that entire wing, instead of dealing with Germany. Germany might get devilishly hard to deal with while we do that though.
I do not have the memory for screen captures on this computer, and I would appreciate someone upploading a screenshot of the minimap at least so we can discuss strategy.

Here is the save

My apologies for hogging the GA
Ps, do not build Zeus, as access to Ivory is needed to get units from it.
Do note I am using an Ansar to guard the Ivory colony while waiting for the swordsman.
We could use a cathedral, in order to avoid lux tax even if we lose a luxury.
Consider it, should we score another leader, and after we get Heroic Epic, which should be the first to be rushed.

Perfect execution Grimjack just like the last time!

Now the game starts to look promising!

By the way what's our economy look like? We may want to disband all the inferior units and replace with AW.

Agree on NOT building Zeus - the time of AC has passed, we now have Ansar Warriors!

We are weak compared to the Germans.

Well, we have a MA with the Indians vs the Greeks. but we can cancel it and earn 20 gpt in the process. I would also make peace with Greece for the techs, the money and the cities (everything they have). I assume that India kills them proper.

Regarding Germany and India: I'm tempted to go after Germany. We have a terrific Ansar army that can do a lot of damage. I assume that the best course of actions is to always attack the strongest civ. Germany in this case.

I agree that we don't need Zeus.

Germany is a monster and is on route to a domination win.

The powergraph, to show you that we just killed anothr monster  Ehm, sorry...Grimjack killed them :)

Ankka, I think you have to continue the war mode that we are in! Keep those ansars coming and spend leaders on the Heroic Epic and cathedral (like Grimjack suggests).

I'm not afraid of War Elephants. We have ansars :hammer:

Ok, I'll try to play today after school. :)

Should I attack Germany with India or India myself? I'm not so good at war tactics...:undecide:

I would certainly fight a war WITH the remaining other big boy (after making peace for everything they have with Greece -but no gpt payment to them). My personal choice is a war vs the Germans with India. Remember that you probably won't get India in a MA when you are at peace. You first have to declare on Germany. I also would wait with the war delcaration until the troops are reasonably in position. But that shouldn't take more than 5 turns at the most.

Be sure to use the army a lot, but don't let it get killed. It's difficult for uis to get another one.

Grimjack suggested to kill India with the help of Germany. The bottom line is that the AI should keep on fighting, because otherwise they would be focussing on growth too much.

PS. Remember to cancel the MA with India before making peace with Greece!

Ok... one more question: is the only way to cancel a MA to just wait that it ends?

I'll play soon.

Ankka, after you made contact with india you have to go to the active deals screen adn click on the MA deal. You then return to the negotiation screen, where you just cancel the deal...

Is this necessary? Don't think so. As long as there is no remaining turns associated with MA you should be fine. But I'm not 100% sure. I never do that and never have rep hit.

Isn't it useful to play with the option "always renegociate deals" (in the preferences menu), so that u don't have to check every turn how much time is left on the deals ?
I use to do this now, this way I never forget to raise my prices :p and I can more easily avoid rep hits...

900AD [Preturn: I decide to just kill the Greek longbow nearby with the Army. Check out to see where we have forces.

Cancel the gpt payment and MA with India.

Make peace with Greece for a worker, Argos & Corinth, Theology, Invention, 4 gold an 1 gpt (all they have). These are deals I like. :D

Abandon the cities.
Greece is a OCC now.

Press enter and hope I didn't forget something...

IBT: Alex of Greece comes and tells us we need to leave his terriory. I agree.

Germany is moving a lot of troops to fight against India.

910AD [1]: Start moving troops towards Germany.
Kill of a barb & a barb camp.

IBT: Greeks pump out Hoplites like mad, like 10 or so of them moving towards India... What are they trying?

Bizzy brings a lot of forces towards India, they're near Mecca now. I won't declare before they've moved a bit further.

Mecca Ansar > ansar.

Berlin builds Sun Tzu's.

920AD [2]: Troops continue the journey to Germania.

930AD [3]: Troops continue the travel to soon ex- German lands.

IBT: Some Indian >< Greek battles.

German troops run around, some turn back to their homelands. What does Biz now have in mind? :hmm:

Mecca ansar > ansar. Also a crusader is produced.

940AD [4]: More troops towards Germania. Soon there's a big enough SoD I think I can start the assault. :hammer: Luckily they don't get knights yet.

950AD [5]: We now have a decent amount of troops at the Wines colony, I think two turns is the time until the attack. Maybe three.

IBT: The Germans aren't making our task easier: They planted a city right beside the Wines colony... No big deal, though.

960AD [6]: Here we go... declare war on Germany.

Sign MA with India against them.

Siege of New Berlin:

Vet ansar retreats from reg spear, who is down to 2 hp though.
Vet ansar finishes off the spear & razes the town.

Other battles:
Vet crusader kills vet longbow.
Vet MedInf kills vet spear, promotes to elite.
Elite* sword kills vet longbow.
Grim Vengeance kills vet longbow x2.

I hope I didn't do any :smoke: moves...

IBT: Seems like I did.. the Germans had several longbows in the fog near our gems colony and managed to kill the guards and illage the colony + the have some 3 longbows in our area south of Mecca.

And Mecca riots. :cringe:

970AD [7]: Vet ansar kills the guard of the longbows, but the longbows are still there.

Vet ansar kills a vet logbow near the German borders.
Vet crusader kills vet longbow.
Vet ansar retreats from vet longbow.
Vet ansar defeats vet longbow.
Vet ansar kills vet longbow.

IBT: Germans kill 3 units & capture 4 catapults + 2 slaves. :smoke:

And Mecca still riots. :smoke:

980AD [8]: Higher luxtax to 10% to keep the People happy.

Army kills 3 longbows.
We capture the catapults back, and the Germans took them 1 turn nearer to their own borders.

Vet ansar kills elite spear & promotes to elite.

Vet ansar loses to reg spear in Cologne.

IBT: We lose a sword to a longbow.

990AD [9]: No battles. Only troops heal & gather again after the almost disaster I got us into..

1000AD [10]: MedInf kills barb. Another one comes to protect the colony.

The troops at the German border are healing but have move points left, next better player can decide what to do with them.

I won't be able to paly on the weekend because of the forum upgrade (;))

And the save. Next better player gets to :hammer: Bizzy. Good luck, and have a better RNG than I usually do.

Actually, as long as you keep our army active, there are very few moves that are wrong.

Rioting when unexpectedly losing a lux is par for the course. ( The second riot might have been avoided though. :)

Do not bother overmuch to safeguard the colonies. The guards we had were mostly to avoid barbs razing them. Now that we are fighting Germany, we should focus on rtazing as much of his infrastructure as possible, while razing the lightly defended cities.
If we can pillage all of his roads, he will drown under maintenance costs :)
