age of Civ IV players

heh, 19. Played Civ1 A LONG time ago, it was on a demo my grandpa got in his mac magazines, wasn't too interested, I liked more fast pace action RTS games then the Civ types. Recently a friend in WoW gave CivIII as his excuse for not being on recently. Did a little research and downloaded FreeCiv, then got my hands on a copy of civIV. WoW subscription ran out, no plan on bringing it back up, Civ is so addicting and fun, and no need for internet :)

My only problem is my gf, I am moving in with her on monday, been spending most of the weeks with ehr already anyways, my first time moved out and computer games have always been my escape, but what do I do now when she guilt trips me out of playing. only time I get to play is if she is at work or school. If she takes a nap, I have to cuddle with her, which is fine, but after 2 hours of not being able to fall asleep and just laying there, shouldn't I be able to get out of bed and go play, I mean hell, its on my laptop so I could even sit in bed with her, but she just won't have it. I don't know what to do, computer was my bf/gf before her lol my computer doesn't start drama or get mad at me, it just sits there, quietly humming, awaiting me :) SUGGESTIONS!?

Jinxx,

I face the exact same problem as you do (things are the same with gf / wife whether you are 19 or 43).

My two bit about women - they want you to focus on THEM and not anything or anybody else. They feel upset when u do something that sort of DETACHES you from them. Irrespective of whether that activity is harmless / fun / your hobby etc. etc.

The best approach I think would be - do something regularly that she likes and you don't particularly do. In my case it is physical exercise. You will find she is more lenient with your gaming after that. Also, you will need to put a cap on the number of hours you play every day. Negotiate that with her and stick to it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Honestly. The ONLY time I play is if she is working or at school. I din't touch my computer while we're together, and I do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING she wants. lol

Guess I'll go with option B) Whining :p

It's always fun to hear old guys yelling at you through the mike on CS.

I feel sorry for you man, most people in my country who still play Video Games at the age of forty are unmarried and basically have no life outside "CounterStrike1.6!!". Trust me, you're in heaven.

I'm still 19, long way to go.

I'm 43, been playing Civ since II. I've been playing computer games since MS Flight Simulator's earliest versions. I've had almost every version since then and fly for a virtual airline. (People complain that Civ IV is a resource hog; try MS Flight Simulator X!!)

My wife doesn't mind my playing Civ (or flight sim), as long as I don't obsess over it. I do spend time with her and my two children. Some things are more important than Civ (heretical statement on this board, I know! ).

Completely agree.! Civ 2 was the best. Esp. the scenarios. (BTW, i'm 61)

I actually agree with your wife, I think people who are in their 30s or older (like me) playing PC games is definitely weird...

Eh, among those of us who grew up in or after the 8-bit home computer era (like myself, I'm 35 and have been messing around with computers since I was 10) it's the rule more than the exception. Our generation will still be playing games in the retirement home, four or five decades from now. Might need bigger monitors to see what's going on, but them's the breaks.

I'm also 60. I've been playing computer games ever since I bought a Commodore 64 back in 1984. I've been playing Civilization since CIV II. If I was stuck on a desert island with only one game to play the rest of my life, it would be CIV II. I've played lots of others but for most of them, like Oblivion or Dungeon Seige (to name a few), once you've played the game once or twice, you've essentially mastered it - the challange is gone. I'm not saying those games aren't good - I really liked some of them. But when I've conquored Morrowind or Diablo - It's time for me to return to Civilization.
Civilization is different every game - with different situations and challanges. And there's enough mods and scenarios to keep one busy for years.
I refuse to join the millions of older people who vegitate in front of a TV every evening. Let the mindless watch the mindless.
Someday, I'll die in some nursing home somewhere - with my hand wrapped around my mouse!

Actually - I meant Civ IV -- I do like Civ IV more than Civ II - But I like Civ II more than Civ III

Even I was surprised while reading through ur first post.

Civ IV truly is the fine cognac of PC gaming.

Glad to see sooo many people older than me.

Wish I could play with someone online though. Tried online randomly and it seems u just take over an AI when you go into the server. I want to play one on one with someone with maybe 5 or 6 AI civs.

On a different subject - is there any thread "2nd best game after Civ" in these forums ?

42 this dec, have every Civ game and expansion, yes i still have the wild west expansion. I have well over 1000 games. I started collectiing games back in 1988. I have old dos games that make me laugh to see where we are today in games.

I will play games, until i go to the great beyond.
