Just wondering if anyone ever opened a game with the cheaper hunting/AH path instead of the costlier ag/AH path and later tried to pick off ag when its cheaper. The notion came to mind when I started a game as Asoka and the first turn suggests neither ag or hunting, but the BFC does have pigs and cows.

Ill normally go this way if i dont have ag, need AH and dont see any grain resources or floodplains that need farming.

But at the beginning you don't know if you're second city is going to need agry?

if i already have hunting, with sheep or pigs in my first city, i'll go for AH. revealing early horses could mean an early chariot rush.

likewise, even if i don't start with hunting, but i have sheep/pigs and no grain, i'll go for Hunting>AH, since I prioritize food resources.

if i don't have hunting or agriculture, have both sheep/pigs and a grain, i'll probably go for ag first, then mining>BW if there's lots of forests, otherwise hunting>AH>mining>BW.

@mfie

I mean the BFC and where the warrior can see, sometimes youll need to pick up agr fairly soon, but other times you can delay it until after BW.

I try to avoid early hunting if at all possible, if you have Spears you can no longer build Warriors :cry:
I agree with this but I'm not a fanatic about it. The most important thing is to ensure that your worker has stuff to do, starting with the pastures.

If I start with the wheel and mining I am much more likely to go the expensive route to AH over the cheaper one. If I need to research these techs too, then the cheaper one becomes more of a necessity.

In a situation where there are no farm or camp resources in the BFC of the capital but we have cow, pigs or sheep I would still take the longer route through aggriculture. Quite simply it's just a more important tech. There's nothiing worse than founded your second city with a nice irrigated corn tile and realising you still havn't teched aggriculture :blush:

If there's deer, fur or ellies around then maybe hunting > Animal husbandry could be a good opening.

ASAP food is useful...and if you want HA's or spears you need hunting anyway :p. Well it also gets you camps. I don't like having to use archers but if there's a TON of land there's that as well.

IF you are founding a second city before having the time to finish AH and Ag after that, if needed, then you are either teching really bad (don't know how its possible so early) or building your settler too damn fast...

with all due respect, there are many instances where you need to settle "blind" ... if you need to block the AI, grab floodplains, or prevent being blocked by the AI.

to the OP: I will often take hunting first -- especially if I am protective, need to build camps, or have a spearman UU. I also like to get the tech discounts, but you can make an argument that you're better off just trading for them later as backfill.

Yeh, sometimes the shortest distance between to points is a straight line. Sorry if that sounds non-committal but I don't remember if thats a purely Euclidean concept or not.

Getting your two food resources improved a few turns earlier?

@DaveMcW

Thanks. Never did need ag until IW/CS. West coast had 6 fish ... and stone.
