AK06 Eclectic

ok, unless Grahamiam wants to take it, I will play it in a few hours. good progress, maybe we can beat those turks soon

ok, since those were pretty uneventful turns in the beginning, i will just state the highlights

1. found Verulamium by the iron to snatch it from greek (now they got neither horses nor iron)

Found Gergovia at the SW tip, then I built up horses and cats for the war

9. 1400BC
Finally attack Edrine with 2 cats, 1 archer and 4 horses
cats go 1/2 and without any loss (1 horse retreated) we defeat 2 spears, 1 king and net 3g + 5 slaves :)

10. 1375BC
found Augustodurum at a place that we claim the iron straight up
trading possibilty is there for 2 fer, but I left it to the next player since we would be broke after stiking a deal. Maybe wait a little
I recommend going after Uskudar next, it has gems. Maybe we could even keep it and only raze core towns
we should continue war until we can extort techs from them
btw do we want to go monarchy or republic? i still prefer monarchy for wars. we should try to get it fast so that we can revolt, build UU and get GA

Well done. I love it when a plan plays out. This game is starting to look like fun. :)

I think keeping the pressure on Ottomans will net us good lands and Monarchy. I prefer raze and replace. We have zero culture so the flip risk is extreme

Roster:
AK- g-man is out 'til Monday so can you play Sunday?
grahamiam - out until Monday, swap with AK?
Bede
TheRat - swapped with g-man

viper - out til 2 Jan

ak061125.jpg

IT: Entremont settler > horse. Maybe we should build the FP. Camulodum rax > horse. Verulamium worker > worker.

1350: drop lux to zero. switch research to lit. Change Augustdorum to rax. Change Lugdunum to rax. settler from Entermont heads south.

IT: Joan declares on Cathy.

1325: Ozzy has more unconnected iron near Bursa.

1300: Start the cats towards Uskador.

1275: Barb horse approaching Verulanium. Eight tiny reindeer sighted in sky heading north.

IT: Entremont: horse>horse. gergovia warrior > rax. Richboro worker > cat.

1250: up lux to 10%.

IT: Alesia horse > horse

1225: cats go 2/3 at Uskador. At least 3 spears there. All potential deals suck. we're way behind.

1200: cats go 3/3 at Uskador. At least 4 spears there. Change Verulanium to warrior.

IT: 4/4 horse loses to 3/3 archer. 4/4 horse def. 3/3 archer. Thracian horse sack Verul. lose 45g. Entremont horse > horse.

1175: Deals still suck. Start pulling back from Uskador. Suspect there are kings and escorts in addition to usual defenders.

IT: Greece and France sign up on Persia. Barbs continue to sack Verul. Lose additional 77g. Lugdunum horse > horse. Joan finishes Pyramids.

1125: Buy CoL from Toka for 19 gpt. Sell CoL to Joan 7g + Phil. Ozzy will give peace, monarchy for peace, CoL, 38g. Will let next player decide.

Lots of moves left. Only thing stopping Alex from hitting us is his lack of iron and horses. Do a through preflight. Lux needs adjusted or Entremont needs a taxman or it will riot.

didn't have a look at the save, but maybe we should go for peace and net monarchy. then revolt and start to built UU to get back to our dear friends (Ottoman) 20 turns later with a nice stack of units? does that sound like a good plan?

That's pretty much what i was thinking, but wanted some group input since it was turn ten. The NW barbs are sapping our gold all too regularly. Would RoP with Alex keep him off our back or would we see legions of troops parading south for an attack on Ozzy?

@AK
I wouldn't give them RoP ever. I think we would want to strike Ottoman again until we can extort more techs, then turn round and attack Greece, or maybe not?
If we sign peace with Ottoman now, we can send our horses north to deal with them. I think barb camps are almost gone (no more land left) except maybe 1 or 2 spaces. Station a horse there and they are gone.

Push Otto into the sea, let's not wait twenty turns. He has great lands. If we could push on until he is down to one town in the tundra, then make peace, great. If we sign a peace treaty now he will have horses and swordsmen and walls in place when it it is time to hit him again. RIght now we area facing spears and archers with horses and cats. Looks like we may have had some losses since the opening of hostilities but not many, so I would press on until Otto cries "Uncle"

@Bede
I am not so sure whether that would succeed. They might have plenty of units sitting in their towns by now, when I attacked the first town, it was defended only by 2 spears, easy feat, but next town had already at least 4 spears according to AK.
I still think we should sign peace to extort monarchy revolt and build as many Gallic swords (they are like swords on horses) and get back to him. Fighting Greece with those might be a bit difficult, since their UU has a defense of 3.

mountains are a problem if we're going to push Ozzy. How do we get the cats in position quickly enough to be useful? Also note Ozzy's spear heading towards our iron. There's a horse in position to cover. If we're going to press Ozzy, we may wish to change the nexus of the attack to Aydin. IIRC, each king gets a spear to cover. Thus any city will have the usual defenders plus kings and their escorts. That's why I backed off. We only have 3-4 towns that are capable of pumping enough shields to churn GS. Would 6-8 GS make a difference in our assault capabilities?

We need towns at 8 spt to build Gallics in a reasonable time frame.

concur that switching the axis of attack to the Ottoman center or right (our left) flank might be better, though having those gems at Uskudar is certainly a tasty prospect. The only problem there is it doesn't turn their flank. No easy access to the grasslands in the Otto center.

We need one road across the iron mountain to have a straight shot to the Turkish plain. We got any spears lying around that can cover a worker horde for a couple of turns? Once that pass is built it will be Turkish Delight for Brennus and the boys.

BTW, shift the citizens at Entremont around a little and you can afford an increase in lux tax, hire a scientist in one of the jungle towns until the ground is cleared to turn science off of 10%, and finally, why are we researching Lit (a cheap tech) at minimum? Better to pick the most expensive of the available ones for that gambit.

taking notes. i agree with bede. pressing on now is better than waiting and I will find a way to get those cats in there for the next player. greece can wait till we have MDI for support, and we can build GS's till we trigger our GA, so no hurry. playing tonight, in about 30 minutes.

i will take a look at the research, as i agree that min research on lit is a waste of time.

No spears, but plenty of horses to cover any archer incursions. Once the road is over the iron mountain, the cats are ready to go.

We're researching Lit. cause I'm an idiot and wanted to move up from comic books to graphic novels

Preflight check: Hire Scientist in entremont; MM Entremont off mined hill and onto river forest to free up the hill for Lugdunum’s growth on the IBT.
MM Richborough off banana and onto roaded river grass.
MM Camul off plain and onto roaded plain. Switch to a spear.
Switch Lug to an archer from a horse (barb warrior too close and not enough spt for a horseman build imho)
Horse covers iron near Entremont. King Rat (from Lug) covers BG near Entremont.
Switch August to a temple and whip it. Workers nearby mine the roaded grassland.
Near August: cat redlines archer, horseman kills it and promotes(5/5).
Drop science to 0% and set research for Republic
Trade: Persia: Construction for CoL and 211g

3 horseman and 2 cats begin rotating around gems mountain towards Uskudar.

IBT: Otto spear moves to the open grass; Entremont horse -> horse; Camul archer -> spear; Verulamium warrior -> temple; August temple -> cat
Massive barb uprising near Richborough.

T1: 1100BC Near Uskudar: cats go 2 for 2, dinging a warrior and an archer
Near Camul: archer kills barb warrior (3/4)
Near Entremont: horseman kills spear and promotes to elite (4/5)

IBT: Alesia horse -> spear; Greeks have completed ToA in Athens; Japan finishes HG in Kyoto; 9 barb horseman are located S of Richmond.

T2: 1075BC Move stack next to Uskudar.

IBT: 2 horses defend against archers, 1 horse dies defending against a warrior; Japan and Greece sign MA vs Persia.
Lug: spear -> horse
Persians complete Great Wall, Greece completes MoM.

T3: 1050BC Everyone is now up Monarchy and Currency
Near Uskudar: cats go 2 for 2 vs warrior on nearby hill; elite horseman kills it (4/5)
Near Camul: archer kills barb horseman (3/4)

IBT: Near Uskadar: horseman on mountain defends against archer flawlessly; Archer near Camul dies to barb horse.
Entremont horse -> horse

T4: 1025BC Cat’s go 3 for 3 vs spears in Uskadar, revealing a 4th spear. Load up on horseman and wait 1 more turn. Kill a nearby 1/5 warrior with elite horseman (5/5)
Spear + workers arrive in August for road operation.
King Bede abandons Camul to let the barbs have their way.
Warrior in Gergovia kills a barb horseman and promotes (4/4). Only 3 more next to town :)
Try to sign on Greece vs Ottomans for all our gold but they will have none of it (even with an MA vs Persia)

IBT: Near August: elite horse defends against 2 archers (3/5) In Camul, lose 1 citizen and 51 gold to barb horseman.

T5: 1000BC At Uskudar: cats go 2 for 3 against spears; vet horseman kills spear (4/4); vet horseman kills spear (3/4); elite horseman dies without scratching spear; dies to spear (2/4); 4/5 horseman kills spear (2/5); 4/5 horseman kills spear (2/5); ¾ horseman kills archer and theres a king on top.
Spearman, archer, and 4 workers move to the iron near August.
Alesia can work mined hill with border expansion so switch to horseman.

Trades: Japan: Ally vs Persia for 60g. Damn, Greece had wanted an alliance as well but only for 4g. We were close to buying currency and I thought the extra gold would do it.

IBT:

T6: 975BC Whip temple in Richborough.
Cat’s go 2 for 2, redlining a spear; vet horseman redlines but kills it; cat injures king; ¾ horseman dies (2/3); ¾ kills it and we take the town + 17g (2/4) and raze it. Get 1 worker from the raze. Move settler and a bunch of horseman to the same spot. Worker heads towards the core.
Now all our gold won’t buy an alliance from Greece vs Persia.

IBT: Otto archers move for August
Entremont horse -> horse; Alesia horse -> horse; Richborough temple -> worker

T7: 950BC Horses cover August; Found Agedincum -> spear; Worker near Richborough runs from barb warrior

IBT: @ August: lose 1 horse, kill 2 archers (remaining horse is redlined)
Lug horse -> horse

T8: 925BC We need to hold August and there are 4 archers in position to attack next turn with only 3 horses (1 redlined) and a king defending. Decide to halt the road project and pull the spear and archer + workers back into August.
Sign Greeks in against Persia for 73g :( I do this as I feel I don’t have a choice. If Ottomans (with 275g in the bank) decide to ally with Greece, they could. This should hold that off.

IBT: lose spear but kill 2 archers at August. Ottomans drop off an archer on the iron.

T9: 900BC No units available to pick off the archer on the iron.

IBT: Ottoman archer doesn’t pillage the iron (?); @ August: Ottoman archer kills ¾ horseman.

T10: 875BC @ August: Horseman kills redlined archer.

Well, I didn’t get the road thru but we do have a gems town.
Verulamium can whip a temple next turn. A greek archer is headed that way but I’m not sure if that’s really an attack party or a barb hunter.
Camul also finishes an archer next turn to swap those pesky barbs. Send it over to get the Barb hut SW of Richborough so we can collect some more cash.
Workers near Camul have not moved as I want to allow the next player to decide where they go.
August is fairly well secure. Lug’s spear is for the road thru the mountains (I MM'd between Lug and Alesia after the pic[/b]

note: we have 2 MA’s vs the Persians. 1 with Japan and 1 with Greece. That should cover our behinds while we go after the Ottomans.

I like it, I really really like it. Nice to see there was a king there which confirms the hypothesis that they don't all congregate in the capital. Watch the iron near Entremont. IIRC:

Bede - up
therat - on deck
AK - in the hole
grahamiam - just played
Viper - Christmas Vacation (mental image - chevy chase) until 1/2

Got it. Playing now.

Pushing forward and killing Turks.

Early - set up the mountain pass road crew and killed some Turks and barbarians.

Middle - Crossed the mountains, bombarded Aydin but was one horse short for the finish. A barb horse came alng and killed the crippled spear and exposed a king. Hit the town again, killed a rushed spear and the king and burned it. Started a settler out of Lugdunum just prior to the assault.

Osman dragged Joan into the war against us.

Late - healed up the hurt horses, killed some more Turks then marched on Istanbul. Rushed the temple in Verlamium. Bought Currency from Toku for 20gpt and we enter the Middle Ages and everybody is up the first tier.

There was a brief opportunity to trade Republic to the Greeks but Osman wouldn't let the knowledge go.

The Turk will talk and we can get techs and/or money for peace, but he is truly on the ropes and burning Istanbul will be a real coup for us, then west to Iznik and north to Antalya. That leaves him with his iron and horse town, however. He still has more than one king left IIRC, so unless they are all at Istanbul he will survive the onslaught.
