ALC Game #10: India/Asoka

also, if you are going to try to vassaliz him, dont forget his northern island cities, he can keep those while you take all his southern continental cities

Yeah, I like the idea of taking the Viking west coast via amphibious invasions, but it will take a while to build up forces to do so. Frankly, I expect to declare war very quickly in order to sabotage Ragnar's oil well and deny him upgrades, then sit back and absorb his attacks while I build up the units required to deal with him. I'm kind of hoping he'll lose a lot of units in attempts to attack me, so by the time I invade I'll find less opposition than is there now.

I think I'd want to capture all the Viking cities, flamingzaroc121, to try to earn the points needed for a domination win. I may vassalize someone on the other continent if I'm close.

Might be too late now, but have you considered a Conquest Victory by vassalizing all remaining rivals?

You can win conquest that way? Interesting.

Churchill would be the toughest nut to crack there. I'd probably win domination before that by vassalizing Isabella and Alexander.

It's actually one of the more enjoyable ways to win by conquest, because you can eliminate a lot of the tedium of finishing off those last cities. You do still need to be careful about the domination limit though. Unless you raze a large portion of Ragnar's cities, I suspect that you'd hit domination long before you conquer all 3 leaders on the other continent. If I correctly remember my calculations from last night, Ragnar alone should get you somewhere around 55%, so you'd be cutting it really close as you add each vassal.

Damn nice game again. It is very much looking like my game on monarch right now. I just obliterated Toku and am facing 2 tech leaders also who have more units. Still there is a weaker prey available :)

About your game, what about leaving Ragnar alone and just plan an overseas invasion with Ragnar as your allie? Could be a nice twist to the game. Ragnar as attack dog on Churchill while you take over Alex and Lizzie who are a bit backwards. On the other hand with bombers in it is just a matter of time before Ragnar goes down. The AI still can't handle mass bombers well yet.

about the oil well, build planes and send them on ragnar's well(s).
It's the fastest way to get rid of upgrading possibilities :)
My own experience doesn't bear this out. The AI loves to park SAM Infantry on its resource tiles, for one thing. And even when attacking unprotected tiles, planes seem to get a chance to destroy an improvement, while ground units will always succeed.

I can't afford to take chances, unless I want Ragnar to upgrade all his Cavalry to Gunships. Tanks will take out the oil well.

Yes, capitulation really helped with the more tedious aspects of warmongering. Not sure if it will help much in this game, though-- Alex and Izzy are not, IIRC, two of the easier civs to knock down. (Churchill, oddly given his famous speeches, is just in the middle of the pack on that score.) Vassalizing is also a nice short cut to a Diplomatic victory, unless you think that's a cheap way to win. Not likely in this game, but worth keeping in mind if you have a couple rollover leaders in the game, like Huayna, Mansa and Gandhi.

That's interesting, that different leaders are more resistant to capitulation than others. Yet another kudo to whoever programmed the AI personalities and made each one so distinctive.

about planes taking out an improvement, it's the fastest way IF THE IMPROVEMENT ISN'T ON THE BORDER.
Not seeing the well on the map (should look again, I know) I assumed it was the case.
with 10 fighters, you're almost sure to destroy the damn thing.

Ah, I see your point. Yes, I've loaded up a few carriers and laid waste to my opponent's economy before.

In this case, the oil well is only 1 tile outside of my borders. In fact, I played the first few turns of the next round last night and I managed to get Patak's borders to claim a tile adjacent to it, so it was easy to pillage with a Tank.

The oil tile south of Cuman did flip, as I feared, but not before I'd pillaged it myself. Hah! Here for ages I've been wondering why the option to pillage your own improvements even exists, and I finally found a use for it. Scorched earth, baby... :D

Well done about pillaging your "own" resource. :D

Do you still get gold for that? I've only ever pillaged my own tile when I accidently built one a tile outside the city and blocked off a better placement. I don't remember if I got gold, though...

Getting gold for your own tiles would be imba. Imagine pillaging your own town for 40 gold and with universal suffering getting them back in 20 turns. Can you see the exploit building up here? Getting quick cash to upgrade your troops while your villages mature.

You get pillage gold only for improvements outside your own culture, including neutral areas with no culture.

And Killroyan means emancipation rather than US for the quick town regrowth ;)

Sorry the update is taking so long. Modern wars require a lot of micro-management. I hope to have the next round posted by tomorrow night at the latest.
