ALC Game 20: Vikings/Ragnar

1NE-1NE with the scout will reveal more tiles I believe. I still think the capitol should be settled eastward (NE looks like good cottage land), with the stone city and amazing GP farm. There could be some overlap because the stone city would be using mostly the clams. It's just that a 7 specialist GP farm just from working 4 tiles is too much to give up in my mind, but doesn't make a very effective capitol. I would move the settler 1 NE and end the turn. Next turn move the scout and then either decide to settle in the original spot or, preferably, to the NE.

I would settle on the stone. I always choose commerce +food over prod in the capital (and it has good production).
Those who tout the awesome production of settling in place need to consider:
1)if you work all those great production tiles there is not enough food to cottage and grow let alone whip.
2) you can eventually work a couple of plains cottages if you have enough food with the W site--that picks up some production.
3) the obvious--early on you can whip and most of what you build early is with food anyway.
4) you can always found other cities and give up one or more of the clams to them.
5) don't discount the value of 2 extra hammers from the start. That is really big and a rarity.
6) not needing to hook up stone is a plus if you want to go for SH--that could be the difference in getting it or not.

Either way the game will be a cakewalk unless Sistuil gets jokered by a bad event--Ragnar is strong, this is a great start, and the AI is weak at archi.

actually Maoi's cool that way. it's prophet points, not artists. i like settled prophets when i'm out of shrines to build. not everybody does tho.

I like settled prophets as well. But late game they are pretty much only good for starting a golden age...if you have the other spare GP's. Nothing is worse than having a 2% chance of a great prophet and 98% for a GM or GE for sids or mining Inc....and getting the prophet :(

Looking back at the screenshot of the new land revealed by the scout, it looks like this island is about 3-5 tiles across, and settling in place would result in a lot of city overlap when trying to work tiles just outside of the reach of the capital. Maybe moving onto the stone wouldn't be so tragic. Either way, I just want to see what happens!

PS. A small, sadistic part of me hopes that a massive barbarian uprising occurs, and that after all this discussion, Sisiutil has to start again. A new thread will be needed, 15 pages long and just discussing the map type and the merits of "no barbarians"; and then another 10 pages discussing where to settle or how to move the scout.

I think it may be time for sis to start moving the initial scout before posting the screenshot. I think his improved ability means he needs less instruction on initial scouting strategies. Just a thought

EDIT: I meant scout, not settler

Kudos to Sis on the great job he has done with his ALC series. But seriously, people, 10 pages and he hasn't even played the first round? I'll probably get flamed, but in my opinion, get a life, and maybe be a little more patient and only post when you have something really meaningful to say? Many of us just don't want to read through 200 posts just to get through the first turn of a game.

Edit: This is why I don't follow the ALC games closely ... way too many posts.

scout's already moved once

i still think settler should move to stone, then, as mentioned above, on the second turn sis can move the scout first (1NE+1N or 1SE+S) to see what turns up and then either settler on stone or return to initial place and build

I think he already moved his scout...it's (the screenshot) somewhere between pages 3 and 8

Thanks, missed it. Still might be a good idea for future games. Post the start and the first scout/warrior move.

That is why I usually just click on the updated links to the turns on the first page. It is not so bad.

As Sis has mentioned time and time again. Discussion is the point of the ALC games.

So which one of us was it that forced you to open the thread? We won't let him get away!

So that's what I would do... move the Settler onto the Stone with the idea of settling there, but on the next turn, before doing anything with the Settler move the Scout again to reveal more territory.

Now who wants to start the debate on which square the Scout should move to? :D

I wonder what the ALC record is for pages of discussion on the capital's location. With this we'll have another ten easily. :crazyeye:

I haven't followed the ALC series that closely for a while, it is kind of off-putting to know that there's 10 pages of posts to wade through before the first city has even been built. I did prophesize that there'd be 10 pages to read through when I had internet access againwhich there was, so if that's not a good reason to move the settler to the stone and build Moai I don't know what is. ;)

But seriously, If you learn something from 10 pages of posts then the thread has been successful right? Or you can at least get into an argument/debate about something :p .

:SIGH:10 pages, this really is getting out of hand. Has anyone else ever loaded a game and spent 4 days working out where to settle their 1st city? just curious.

You dont have to read through 200 posts, just wait till Sis updates the 1st post with "Round 1" then click there. I'm guessing you dont see the funny side of 10 pages + of posts about where to settle the 1st city, personally I do find it quite amusing.

No, but seeing as how Sis already told us he wouldn't be playing until Sunday, I don't think he does either.

Ahh now we all know how Sis's perception of time works, if he says "Sunday" that could mean anytime between now and next weekend....
