ALC Game 20: Vikings/Ragnar

Ahh now we all know how Sis's perception of time works, if he says "Sunday" that could mean anytime between now and next weekend....

Sisiutil lives in American Northwest, which is still in the early afternoon at the moment. There is a significant time difference between you and him.

I think it may be time for sis to start moving the initial scout before posting the screenshot. I think his improved ability means he needs less instruction on initial scouting strategies. Just a thought

i'm not denying his ability has improved bunches or saying he "needs" instruction. but for this screenshot he posted:
Since I think this start will entail less debate than usual (though of course I could be wrong),
and that statement (not about gameplay, about debate) was definitely wrong . so my vote is no. sidenote: to help people who don't particularly want to read such debates, your suggestion of clicking the links on the first page was great. helpful, non-flamey, non-antagonistic, that was very classy so thank you. :)

But seriously, people, 10 pages and he hasn't even played the first round? I'll probably get flamed, but in my opinion, get a life, and maybe be a little more patient and only post when you have something really meaningful to say? Many of us just don't want to read through 200 posts just to get through the first turn of a game.

Edit: This is why I don't follow the ALC games closely ... way too many posts.

think about that what you just said. why are there "way too many posts" in the first place? they get here somehow, people want to post. "many of us" clearly do "want to read through 200 posts just to get through to the first turn of the game". or at least they've found ways around the things that annoy them (martin026's idea of going directly to links seems a good one) that they don't add more posts trying to change the entire flavor of the series. admittedly, once someone complains there are 10 pages, there will be some posts from folks trying to make it more than 10 pages, you can always count on that. but anyway...

isn't the very thing that annoys you about ALCs evidence that a lot of people people do like them the way they are? ALCs are about discussion and they have a big following.

there are many types of series out there now of a variety of flavors, which is a VeryGoodThing. mileages vary, and different people prefer different sorts of threads. it's great that there are other options for people who prefer the more serious, less chatty type too. for example, you're running a series that i'm enjoying reading. i've posted in yours, but i kept those meaningful posts i think. technical questions about patches to be sure folks could download your saves, thoughts when you asked for 'em, that sort of thing. i do know that the tone is different, and i try to post differently. you can smack me if i get out of line. i'd prefer a PM to a public smacking directed personally at me if you remember that at the time, please.

i am not on a campaign to turn all the follow-along series into ramble-fests, i promise :). and i don't think you'll have much success trying to change the tone so drastically here. quite frankly i hope that you don't, which i'm sure is no surprise ;).

Completely agree with KMad.

All in all, for those who like the ALCs but not the intervening discussion between rounds, Sisiutil always links each of his rounds in the first post of his thread. That way you can quickly follow his game without having to sift through everyone else's posts, and therefore saving you the effort of writing posts griping about having to sift through everyone else's posts.

I'm also with KMad. The discussion about every little decision is what has made the serie so popular. You get different thought and views from people with varying playstyles. It's a great learning experience and I've picked up dozens of little hints and ideas on strategies from here.

Poor Sisutil that actually has to make a call that will disappoint half the crowd.

I do like the ALC games, and have no proplems with it ... and as i predicted, I got flamed. The fact that I got flamed hardest by KMad cracks me up.

I don't have a problem with the great popularity and great # of responses to the ALC games. In fact I think it a good thing. My only point was ... hey 200 responses before the game starts is a bit silly. But maybe that's only a factor of the delay of the start of the game. I imagine that if Sis' posted the initial screen of a game, and waited about 10 days to play round 1 there would be 1000 posts before he started ...

And I also want to say ... I was not trying to take anything away from Sis ... just suggesting that maybe some people go a little overboard with unproductive posts sometimes.

11 pages of text and still no settling ... even worse than the Mongol ALC

I wonder what would happen if S man came around and said : "My friends , I decided to wander around with the settler for a few turns to try to find a perfect spot " ;) :rotfl:

More seriously, settle on place

I often just read sitsuils documentary then comment directly on that as reading all the commentary takes alot of time.. Oh and settle on the stone.

that wasn't even close to a flame. if i wanted to flame you, you'd know it, okay? i save them, and they hardly ever get used. i wasn't mad at you for posting what you did, and i didn't make my post in anger. i did want you to laugh, so cracking up is fine, but i guess i didn't get the tone right. not the first time.

I gotta admit, I'm with xanadux on this one. Except now by posting this, I've become a hypocrite. Oh well. Anyway, there really isn't anything to talk about. I mean, we could discuss the whole "settle in place" vs "settle on the stone" thing ad nauseum. But everything that needs to be said about it has been said. At this point we are getting way too many posts that are effectively just spam. If there's nothing to discuss, instead of posting "nothing", or veering off topic (like I'm doing now), why not just wait for Sisiutil to post? At that point there'll be something to talk about again.

I agree with Bhuric to a point. That being said, I have seen plenty of people who are pretty passionate about their approaches to the game and that tends to lead to the multiple number of posts as people debate the best course of action to take.

But that's what happens when you get a series that is popular... everybody wants to read it, many want to give suggestions and some will argue their positions passionately.

I just stopped in to say that I've been gone a year and that I am very surprised that this is still going on.

Infer from that whatever you will.

Carry on.

Without me.

I just wanted to post again as I am, as KMad pointed, amused by people complaining about posts that mean nothing.

Also, being in Australia I can never remember how far behind Sis is on the timescale. So when he says Sunday I think, well its Midday Monday here. Has Sunday finished for Sis yet?

Like the idea of running the settler around for a few turns. That would be funny.

Sunday is already gone in Hungary :)

If this game will be anything near as good as how it started, it might just be a bestseller. I just hope Sisiutil can handle the pressure.

Best post to-date.

Now does my post count as a reply supporting your post?

Nope, S man sunday will last some more hours ( he's in west Canada ) ;)

I think they use a strange metric calender there. But then again it's 4000BC in this game so he probably hasn't researched calender yet. That being the case I don't think he has the full grasp of the word "Sunday".....his unsettled settelers may believe "sunday" to be some sort of edible roots.

My vote is for a regen, just to piss everyone off :crazyeye:
