All Quiet on the Civ Front

What do you mean by "actual modding support?" I am an author or contributor to over 90 Civ 6 mods and I am fine with the modding tools. It'd be nice to be able to use more assets, and it would have been nice to have more documentation or communication when the modding community was grappling with certain difficulties, but the Civ 6 modding scene is vibrant and the SDK is good.

I also don't really share any of the other complaints, except it'd be nice to see how many resource copies you have on the deal screen. But calling this game a "trainwreck" is reckless hyperbole. Civ 6 is a wonderful game.

Since you like Civ 6, it's quite likely that the type of modding you're doing doesn't change the core mechanics or AI behaviour as much as those who are disappointed with Civ 6 would like to change them.

Lol. They changed the name to DepotTest. I guess someone frowned on their shenanigans.

At least the first name wasn't "Boomgoestheracingraptor". See, no personal antagonism over your investigative journalism. :)

Hey Eagle, was it ever ascertained what "GH" was supposed to stand for?

I don't believe so. I'm kind of surprised this depot isn't called Civ IJ. That may still happen.

At the risk of being pedantic, that still makes what we have "actual" modding support. In my experience (as a games modder, too), it's hard to find a game that offers everything its content creators desire! Short of having the whole game's source code and buildable assets, there's always something more that people could expect.

I don't feel this is unreasonable hyperbole either - 3D assets are always a point of contention (understandably, despite the increasing problems in externalising AA / AAA workflows in a way that modders can work on it without significant cost), but more than that this community has an expectation of releasing game DLL(s). That's a lot of what (mechanically) makes the core game.

I dunno. It's never any harm to ask for more, but I always maintain that diminishing what we have (in the arguable case we have something useable, which we do) doesn't do us credit, and doesn't incentivise further investment.

Firaxis was just checking if Eagle was awake. Good joke on their part.

(Come say hallo Sarah)

It's actually kind of a fluke. I had reduced my rate of F5ing SteamDB to about once every few hours due to the dry spell. But I managed to catch the new DLC app and the test depot within minutes of their happening.

Perhaps too close to the truth. Dynamite = railroads. Discuss. :)

Awww. They just killed the falconchase build. Now I has a sad.

But they are testing "Boom" on 2kqa_a

Can we read anything from the testing? Or is this just normal behaviour

My excitement might be getting the better of me

It's far to early to tell anything. Although, one might expect a DLC depot to be called DLC07, so maybe it means it's an expansion. But who knows?

If it's a DLC, we can eventually deduce a release date, unless they get all wonky on us like in the spring patch.

But if it is an expansion, there's no point in following it closely because they will begin the marketing push long before we could deduce a release date based on qa updates.

They've also updated the compat (compatibility?) Build.

Yes, I took Xur's original post to mean the release of the DLL. Which has happened in the past.

Whether that will happen this time around, who knows? There were comments prior to the release of Civ 6 that it would be the most moddable Civ yet, but that could have been referring to moddable in terms of creating and adding new assets, as opposed to making the deeper changes possible with modifications to the DLL.

I presume Firaxis will make that decision based on what they consider best for their business i.e. whether the release of the DLL will result in mods that drive additional sales of Civ 6 to people who wouldn't otherwise buy it and/or whether not releasing it will positively or negatively hurt sales of Civ 7+.

GH ... Golden H ... golden age -> (the dark, golden & heroic age mechanic as placeholder for all)

Boomgoesthedynamite ... DepotTest -> railroads

The age of steam ... Industrialization(!) ...

tooot - toooot --- toooo ... can I hear them already? ... They are coming! OmG ...

edit: (as already mentioned by Disgustipated & SammyKhalifa: railroad & locomotive breath)

I thought Boomgoesthedynamite might refer to Terra-forming ala Civ 2 - knocking Mountains down to Hills and Hills down to Plains.

Although, as an avid Jethro Tull fan, I am quite fond of Locomotive Breath

This depot name is clearly a reference to a tunnel / canal mechanic.
