Altered Maps 4: Partitioning Eastern Europe Like In The Good Old Days

The number of countries recognising same sex marriage rises from 8 to 28, mostly in the EU. Nepal becomes the first Asia nation to recognise same sex marriages in about 2010. Cambodia, with Royal support also allows same sex marriage become the 2nd Asian nation to do so. Japan will shortly expand it recognition of same sex marriage from foreign marriages to all its citizens. Israel also introduces civil same-sex marriages despite heavy religious opposition from the Jews, Muslims and Christian heads. Uruguay leads South America, being the first from the continent to legalise SSM. Argentina, Colombia and Brazil follow shortly. In Oceania, Australia and New Zealand follow suit.

The USA might have done it by this point, too. At least, there would be more US states recognizing same sex marriage than there are now.

Also, did the thread get jacked by you silly Slavs again? :p

Denmark is still wrong, Mowque.

That may work better as an alt-hist in the NESing forum.

It's an alternate history on alternatehistory.com's forums. Besides, Mowque doesn't like NESers or the NESing althist thread.

They stoled mai thunder with their Slavish ways.

Well that is why it is still "Partially recognise SSM" I can't imagine Alabama, home of the dixie saints, legalising it.

Byzantine resurgence. This is c. AD1700.

So, assuming that the Byzantine Empire managed to halt Arab expansion and then later Turkish Expansion, how does that prevent/allow:
1) Russia to not seize the Crimea
2) Japan to acquire the Philippines, Taiwan and that Kamachan? Peninsula
3) Netherlands to sieze Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico
4) The Byzantine Empire, whose navy is made of Mediterranean Galleys, to take Northern Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Guyana etc.
5) As well as holding on to North Africa?

German and English are very similar. Its easy to guess a lot of German or Dutch words to an English speaker.

So, assuming that the Byzantine Empire managed to halt Arab expansion and then later Turkish Expansion,

No, the Arab conquests happened on schedule. (that's Islamic Egypt in green there) The Turks were weaker than OTL though, and this assumes a competent (and quite militant) Byzantine ruler arose in the late Middle Ages.

1) Russia to not seize the Crimea

This map is for 1700. Russia won't get Crimea until later in the century.

2) Japan to acquire the Philippines, Taiwan and that Kamachan? Peninsula

Secondary PoD, result of Byzantine involvement in the Far East.

3) Netherlands to sieze Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico

My map! I say so! :p

4) The Byzantine Empire, whose navy is made of Mediterranean Galleys, to take Northern Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Guyana etc.

Expansion of the navy. The OTL Ottomans campaigned in the Indian Ocean for a while.

5) As well as holding on to North Africa?

Reconquest of North Africa, actually. Holding on to it is quite difficult at first, but more achievable once massed forced conversions are underway.

Why would the Byzantines colonize the Indian ocean if they didn't have a port in the Red Sea or the Persian Gulf? It seems to be out of reach.

I mean the Byzantines repulsed the intial Arab invasion into Anatolia

This map is for 1700. Russia won't get Crimea until later in the century.

Well, would Crimea not be Turkish anyway? The Mongols would still come, Golden Horde, yadee yada

Secondary PoD, result of Byzantine involvement in the Far East.
Okay....

My map! I say so! :p

Okay....

Expansion of the navy. The OTL Ottomans campaigned in the Indian Ocean for a while.

And lost quite badly due to their usage of galleys against Portuguese Carracks

Reconquest of North Africa, actually. Holding on to it is quite difficult at first, but more achievable once massed forced conversions are underway.

Wouldn't the distance make it almost impossible?

Chernobyl, eh? See that one red dot in south-western Poland? The one that doesn't quite border Czech or Slovakia? That's pretty much where I was when this @%! went down - and the government didn't tell us for over a week! Or was it weeks? I don't remember.

I do remember having at some point to drink a bunch of iodine solution in class - and a ban on mushroom picking for a couple years. (Going on a mushroom picking expedition is a rite of passage for a lot of Poles)

More Timeline. A ..?better? Mid East. (my co-author did quite nice job, although the map is a little busy, imo)
