When they give all those ethnicities in Africa, is their defition of "ethnicity" the same as perhaps the American view of "German", "Irish", "Jewish", "Italian" etc.? Or would they count the German ethnicity as "Kieler", "Prussian", "Nordrheiner", "Tyroler", "Liechtensteiner" etc.?
It's the former.
African languages and ethnicities are very, very, very diverse. Pretty much impossible to have good sized nation-states in most of those areas.
As for the balkanized Asia, China needs to be balkanized more. Here's a link to a map of the chinese languages:
