I played through an entire game on version 2 on immortal small map with 1 city challenge 
and won, just barely though. AI does seem to be a bit better late game I agree. I'm still playing slowly in my Polynesia game, im about 1800 score, and the closest is 1400 I think. this is on deity normal map/speed. I was 1400 when people were 1000 so they are catching up I guess. This was version 2 though, I think ill continue the Polynesia game with version 4* and tell you how it goes.
