That's an interesting idea. So do you think I should try using Republic? Does the lesser war wearniess make up for the faster workers of democracy? Is it better than communism if you have a hybrid strategy of buildinging up then fighting? I normally go monarcy, democracy, communism. This sounds like it might be a good idea.

What strategies do you use to cut back on the unhappiness (besides luxuries)?

And which is better: minimal or communal corruption? My strategy is sort of like a Commerical/Militarisic strategy. (different from the Scientic/Militarstic strategy. Not that I play as the Romans much though, and Religious is the most useful)

You definately do not want to switch to republic while at war, although, the war weariness in republic is nowhere near as bad as in democracy. As far as worker rates go, if you have been fighting that long I am guessing you have captured an abudnance of workers, so you probably do not need the bonus.

I usually fight my wars in monarchy if I have a choice, particularly now since the last patch increased the harmful effects of pop-rushing.

If you had started the war in republic you would probably still be in good shape provided you have enough luxuries (4+) and marketplaces in most large cities.

As far as happiness in republic, temples, cathedrals and colloseums quell malcontents, while marketplaces and banks can quickly start a WLTK day. The most useful wonders for republics are the Sistine Chapel and Universal Suffrage. I begin making plans to build universal suffrage about halfway through the middle ages, because it allows a republic to fight even very long wars as long as you are not the aggressor. Getting used to running a republic takes some time, and planning from the outset, but the rewards are well worth it. I rarely use any other form of government.

I have plenty of surplus captured workers usually. The main problem is getting those wonders. Sounds like republic might work well. I will try it next game. If the Universal Suffrage is like that thing in Civ 2 it would pretty much solve war wearniness for a republic, and a lot for a democracy.

One way to insure you get those wonders is to get leaders. Always maintain a large military, just as I am sure you normally do, and just wait for a neighbor to threaten you, which they will. Then fight until you get a leader. You should have plenty of time since you are not the aggressor. Universal Suffrage is pretty easy to get, at least for me. I generally take a slight tech lead at the beginning of the industrial age, and I use it to get to industrialization first. The AI does not take this path at first. I make sure one of my highest production cities has been entirely railroaded, so that its production is extremely high. I can normally finish it in about 25 turns, and with a 10 turn head start, the AI will not beat you to it.

I always save the FP (and a GL if I have one) for an overseas colony. As I play on a map size where there is more room than possible cities - because of the 512 limit placed by Firaxis - there will always be room for an overseas empire and unless you start on the largest continent without too many AI civs, you will need an overseas empire to win. Besides which, I like to create and build multi-continent empires. Admittedly, I have modded the game to give 4 buildings anti-corruption effects and increased the optimum city number so generally I can manage corruption/ waste on the home continent. If I have the capital in one corner of a large, one continent empire, I will build the FP on that continent to maximize productivity there. I will normally pick a shield potential rich area as the site for the FP, as waste bugs me more than corruption and one can never have too many unit factories. I never move the capital just because it doesn't seem right - even though it has happened in all four countries in which I have lived. We all have our blind spots.

Now I have a question as well. Playing 1.17 for the second time and both times luxury resources appear on only a single continent each and never on continents which were empty at the start. Is this because the mod I play (a variation on the LWC/5 mod) has non-zero values for the appearance/disappearance of luxury resources; the 1.17 patch or just co-incidence? Strategic resources seem to be evenly distributed. However, access to extra luxury resources (and sometimes strategic resources) is a good reason, and historically realistic, reason for such colonies.
