American heroes?

Die honorably in battle and you will go to Valhalla!

No, really, a hero IMHO is basically someone who risks his safety or comfort to help others. A soldier who fights for his country in a "just" war is risking his safety to help his family and countrymen. A firefighter risks his safety to aid people in danger. A political activist may in some cases risk his comfort (or even safety) in an effort to help people be aware of a danger or threat to them, or to help someone unjustly treated. A teacher foregoes his comfort when he deals with a "difficult" or abusive student, in an effort to reach out to him with a good example.

Such people are all "heroes".

And let us not forget the great Black Sabbath song:
"Zero the Hero!"

PS
I agree with allan's description.

A hero is the kind of man that will throw himself on a grenade to save his friends. During ww1 there was a british sergeant wich name i do not remember who singelhandedly stopped the german army in it tracks for long enough for the british to retreat. That to is a hero. Same goes for many firefighters and paramedics

I've heard that story. It was in belgium and he was the first british casualty of the war.

It doesn't have to be war-related. I would nominate Martin Luther King Jr. as an American hero simply because he had the courage to face the odds and put his just cause before his own safety.

Heroes must have their story told...without that they are nothing.
