"American" steriotypes

One common one I've heard: every American owns a gun.

I don't. I did for a bit, to practice with civie weapons. I know that if the poop hits the fan, the first person an honest freeman will give a wepoan to is me (barring a ranger living nearby). As long as people can have weapons, mine (to resist tyranny) is at hand.

Stereotyping does not go well with accurate information, for instance the difference between popular vote and electoral college. Most of the French people I know not familiar with the US political system don't exactly care, they see Bush in office and that's it. Those who do know will point out that Bush WAS reelected...

But yeah, the Texan cowboy is a stereotype that's hard to kill in the French mind.

The Texan cowboy is just one part of the United States. Most of these sterio types seem to be "white" American sterio types.

You guys keep saying stuff like listening to country music drinking a lot of beer etc.

Don't you guys know that not everyone in America is white?

Do you have any sterio types for Americans that could apply to more than one race?

I do! Indians (from India) - taxi drivers ;) (Dammit, that's only 1 race).

We hate non-whites?

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. America is MUCH more diverse than Europe but the sterio type is "we hate non-whites"?!?

Europe is ultra lilly white compared to America but we get the "we hate non-whites" sterio type.

Obviously this sterio type would only apply to white Americans, and further more its a big lie.

are you black?

the stereotype goes around that a lot of them are uneducated thanks to the malicious system in the USA and the high crime.

once again:
Stereotype
kthx. :)

Ignore this.

Very cheerful, very angry, very fat, very friendly, very religious, very naive, very optimistic, very unable to handle their drink. I've met very few Americans who it was easy to dislike
I've met few Americans it wasn't extremely easy to dislike. Maybe all the good ones head to Ireland, and we get the morons.

Double Post. Stupid computer.

No. And not neccerily black. And what I meant was a stereotype that could apply to both whites and blacks in America. A stereotype that goes across racial lines. An "American" stereotype. Not just for white Americans or Black Americans or Hispanic Americans Oriental Americans or whatever but for AMERICANS.

I told you already: uneducated and ignorant.

and also, necessarily.:)

Most Americans I have met have been OK, if a little obnoxious and loud (but then again, so am I). Boy, they have some tubbies there though ;)

How'd you come to this conclusion?

By taking at the annual census and comparing the diversity of America to Europe's.

Eastern Europe is exremly homogeneous. Central europe less than eastern but still pretty much.

Western Europe has SOME diversity but its nothing compared to America.

so, yeah, being white just doesn't makes you diverse right? Talking 40 languages on one small continent isn't diverse, or having thousands of years of history with so many ethnicies.

Nope, according to oldschooler88, it all boils down to skin colour.

America's nothing compared to us. (pertaining to multiculturalism)

Well he believes in Nazi racial theory, so I guess so.

O RLY?

The nation's population will look dramatically different by mid-century, becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and a good deal older as it increases from about 302 million to 439 million by 2050, according to projections released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The findings are in line with recent analyses published by independent demographers, but they are the first such official Census Bureau projections in years.

Minorities, about one-third of the U.S. population, are expected to become a majority by 2042 and be 54 percent of U.S. residents by 2050.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/13/AR2008081303524.html

OTTAWA: Canadian census data released Wednesday show that the number of minorities in the country has surpassed the 5 million mark for the first time in history. They now represent 16.2 percent of the Canadian population.

The total minority population skyrocketed by 27 percent between 2001 and 2006, due in large part to the influx of South Asian and Chinese immigrants, according to the census.

The nation's minority population topped 100 million last year, about one-third of the total, and California had roughly 20 million minority residents, more than half of its total, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

So now Canada is the melting pot? I don't think so. Get your own gig. As long as you are at 1/2 of our minority population per capita, I don't wanna hear your "we're the melting pot now" lies. You're French AND British, we get it; we are very impressed; let another 15 million Asians in and we'll talk.

Besides, what little non-inter-white multiculturalism Canada has exists only in the biggest urban centers; geographically, it's a joke.

Don't give me that bullcrap. The majority of my friends are not white.

America is a diverse melting pot country with influences from all over the planet.:) Europe, Africa, native America, and various parts of Asia all make up what is the United States today.

Yes there are a lot of different languages and different "ethnicities" but racially speaking, does it really compare to our country? And i'm such a neo nazi then why would I be bragging about our diversity? Yes, I suppose "French" and "German" would technically be a different ethnicity but in America we're so diverse that they would just both be "white".

So now Canada is the melting pot? I don't think so. Get your own gig.

We are not the melting pot. in fact, we pride ourselves on NOT being a melting pot.

Melting Pot: n.
1. A container in which a substance is melted.
2. A place where immigrants of different cultures or races form an integrated society: “Canadians . . . liked to think of their country as a mosaic rather than a melting pot” (Kenneth McNaught).

We want immigrants to add to our community, we want different cultures to show up and benefit us in more ways than just food. we don't want them all to become homogenized Canadians.

finally, dont forget that non-latino whites are not all part of the majority.

admittedly, my view may be slightly biased, i live in ONE OF the most multicultural cities in the world.

in 2006 46.9% of people are visible minorities, and in 2001 44% of torontonians were foreign-born. bear in mind that MANY visible minorities were canadian born, so that includes a multitude of non-canadian white immigrants as well, who bring their cultures to canada in addition to the visible minorities' cultures.
