An Appeal to Fear

Sultanate of Hong Kong

Territory: Mainland Japan, Bangladesh, Somalia/Djibouti, and maybe Vietnam are cores, everything else is a colony.

Society: Like the Moors but in China. Jizya tax wooo.

History: In the middle of the warlord period, which began in 1896 due to a series of assassinations, a singular man with a vision stood out among the countless barbarian conquerors and native dissidents: Emir Al-El-Amein of Djibouti. Where others saw land and wealth, he saw a mission from Allah. He landed his army of Jihadists (many out of Bengal) in Hong Kong, quickly seizing the port from the skeleton British garrison (as their troops were depleted due to Germany). The surrounding areas were subdued while a message to Yunnan was, calling the various warlords to arms. The large Muslim population in the area (which had been significantly less persecuted by the Manchu because they decided to not be dicks) either joined the Jihad immediately or was "convinced" into doing so. The lands in between were forced to capitulate, faced with two fronts. Tibet's Muslims, primarily those in Xinjiang, rose up and marched to Gansu, securing the north for Al-El-Amein, and central China felt the same wrath as Guangxi.

Fearing a unification of his rivals, Al-El-Amein began to slow his rate of conquest down, playing on the rivalries of the various warlords in the east, while in the meantime, conquering Vietnam and the Philippines. By 1900, most of China was under the banner of Hong Kong, and the man that had once been an Emir was now a mighty Sultan. He united with Bengal, grateful for the aid it had supplied, and began expanding in Africa and South America out of greedy European hands. In 1907, Al-El-Amein once again shocked the world by invading the island nation of Japan, which outlasted any other foe the Sultan had ever encountered - three years.

The ruleset is currently going through some tweaking. Economics and diplomacy have been slightly revamped, and warfare is in the middle of being gutted.

The two most important things are industrial efficiency and special projects, both of which can be viewed in the new OP.

Stats are almost done, sans NPCs and warfare related ones like troops. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...FKWkZHVE5xTkw3NndPNWV4Rnc&usp=drive_web#gid=1

What year does this game start again?

Yeah, but what year will the IOT start?

noting that I'm almost done the application

Friendly reminder to get in your application form if you haven't.

OP has been updated with rule changes. Check out war and order format sections.

Everyone can start with 3 divisions - choose whether you want infantry, armor, ships, or a combination, and choose 3 generic modules for each one including names. Secondaries get 1 extra division, great powers get 3 extra divisions. You can make this list public or PM it.

The game starts on Monday regardless of whether you have finished a signup or not.

Start date changed to 1920 because it makes more sense considering some of the things featured.

Government: Constitutional Monarchy. Ruling from Damascus, the Caliph of the Caliphate of Damascus rules over large swathes of the Middle East, but true power rests in the hands of the Parliament.

Society: Liberalization and modernization have gone hand-in-hand in turning the Caliphate of Damascus into a respectable mercantile country. Despite modernization efforts often clashing with the desires and whims of both political and religious hardliners, popular support among the people due to the prosperity the region has seen in the last few decades have pushed hardliners out of the mainstream for the time being.

Despite this, the subjects of the Caliphate relish in their unique cultural identities.

However, the birth pains of an industrial economy has left its mark on the Caliphate. The moderates in parliament often took cues from political and religious radicals to placate the overwhelming majority of people seeking the light in the darkness of industrialization. While wages have increased for many people, a disproportionate amount of the wealth has ended up in the hands of a capitalist class who, in times of social instability, are forced to part with profits and wealth to support local charities to earn the goodwill of local religious leaders.

For their part, religious leaders are as divided as the poor and rich. Some religious leaders have mixed a variety of western political thought into their sermons and teachings, including socialism and equality. Other religious leaders view these men as leading fellow Muslims astray, while most religious leaders fall in-between except when the economy is in a downturn.

Khedivate of Egypt
640px-Flag_of_Muhammad_Ali.svg.png

Name: Khedivate of Egypt (Egypt)

System of Government: Monarchy

Ruler: Khediv Fuad I

Territory: Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and others. I forget exactly what's a colony and what's a core.

Society: The Khediv rules the country and holds a strong grasp over the state apparatus. Recently Fuad I moved against the national legislature, forcing it into an advisory role rather than a legislative one. This has fueled unrest against the regime, along with the frequent dissolution of parliament. In addition, Egypt is hurt by debt. The previous Khediv, Isma'il Pasha, spent much money in attempts to modernize the country, which have (by and large) succeeded.

History: Ruled by the descendants of Muhammed Ali, the Khedivate has fought fiercely to remain independent from colonial rule.

Government: Though in theory a constitutional parliamentary monarchy, the Khediv of Egypt has the authority to suspend parliament at will, and it has recently assumed an advisory role rather than a legislative one.

National Value: Independence.

The German Empire of Holy Rome

Territory: Germany proper, the lowlands, Denmark, Sweden, England, the Caribbean, and Central America.

Society: The society of Germany is built by a kind of unspoken caste system. The poor class usually stays poor, the middle stays in the middle, and the rich stay rich. There are exceptions; Germany holds a free market capitalist system after all. However it is very hard to advance in class despite the free market and rarely does anyone do so. There are several monopolies that basically enforce the caste system, owning or controlling most business outlets.

History[still a WIP]: Before the emergence of the German Empire, the Holy Roman empire reigned. It was during the 16th century where major imperial reforms began centralizing the German kingdoms. Backing this push was the Kingdom of Brandenburg and several north German allies. In the South, the Kingdom of Bavaria and it's comparatively larger sphere of influence within Holy Rome sought to keep the status quo. This lead to armed conflict as the two powers vied for the Imperial throne, triggering what came to be known as the War of the Throne in Germany, and the Ten Years' War in surrounding countries.

Battling began in 1598 and ended in 1608. Despite being outnumbered, in the whole conflict and in virtually every battle in the war, northern forces declared victory. The Treaty of Cologne saw that Bavaria capitulated to Brandenburg and Brandenburg lay permanent claim to the Imperial Throne. Afterwards, more reforms were made to centralize the Empire further. These reforms eventually lead to the Holy Roman Civil War in 1623, in which several states tried to eject from the Holy Roman Empire. States in the lowlands unified as the Confederation of Benelux to fight Empire on a united front. Italian states of the empire and Switzerland splintered independently, but were more or less ignored as the Empire decided it did not wish to fight a war on two fronts.

As such, the entire Imperial army came to bear on Benelux. However, an opportunistic Swedish Empire, having a border with Holy Rome in their vassal state Denmark, decided it would be the right time to invade as most of the imperial army was ravaging Benelux. The civil war itself ended almost as quickly as it began, even if there was a lot of blood spilled, but the war Empire had with Sweden would last several years. Although Sweden pushed as far as the gates of Brandenburg, the army reorganized and began striking back. The decisive battle at Oldenburg essentially ended the war, as the victory Holy Rome claimed there snowballed into several hundred more. The Swedish army was so thoroughly dominated the Kingdom couldn't refuse the Treaty of Oldenburg, that saw Denmark and Sweden divided into several duchies that were absorbed into Holy Rome. The war was over by 1626.

After this, Holy Rome stayed in relative peace for a time. This wouldn't last, as by 1767 the Empire again found itself at war in the War of English Succession. The root of the conflict came when England's monarch died without any heirs. The throne was legally to be passed down to the King of Brandenburg, but the English had other plans. English nobles decided that they would abolish the monarchy and establish a republic in its place, infuriating the Emperor of Holy Rome. In response, war was declared.

Although the English held the advantage at first with a large and powerful navy, the Emperor was quick to order the construction of a large fleet himself. The war, which was mostly fought at sea, lasted 13 years. The English were unable to keep control of most of its colonies abroad, and they quickly began rebelling. Many of these rebellions were being supplied by the Emperor, thus raising hell on the English. However, when the English were pushed back to the coasts of England, the Emperor sent an ultimatum to the colonies in the Caribbean saying that they will pledge fealty to him or face blockade and starve out. Either way would be netting the Empire a larger colonial presence.

At the end of the war, the Empire was successful in claiming England's throne; the nobles involved had their assets seized. The peasantry didn't complain all too much as union with the empire meant a better standard of living, being that the alternative was a bankrupt republic without any colonies.

With a strong European presence and a new colonial empire worth being called such, the states of Holy Rome enjoyed much prestige and riches. However, as the 19th century dawned, a sense of nationalism in Germany became mainstream. In 1804, a new Emperor that subscribed to the nationalist ideology that was spreading like fire began enacting even stronger centralization reforms than what caused the Civil War. German dominance in the Holy Roman Empire was already apparent, and by 1815 the Empire was regularly referred to as the German Empire.

By this time the industrial revolution was in full swing.

Government: Germany has a Federal Monarchy in place. The Emperor acts as the Head of State and appoints a Chancellor to be the Head of Government. The imperial diet, or Reichstag, coordinates with the imperial council, or Reichsrat, to act as legislation.
