And so it came to pass, that we became SEVEN BILLION strong!

See the pesticides/synthetic fertilizers example. They surely increased agricultural productivity, but in some areas their overuse practically ruined the land (this is a major issue in India, for example).

This is the classic example, along with deforestation. Short-term improvement, long-term loss.

Ironically the key to solving the food crisis may be in some rather ancient technology. Sub-Saharan Africa, having mostly not previously been exposed to the Green Revolution and having paid the price because of it, may in the long run be the big winners from new agricultural practices. Assuming, of course, we actually learn from our mistakes.

Well, on a quasi-serious, but hopefuly informative in an encyclopedic way note, a late saint of the orthodox church (Elder Paisios) had made the prophecy that a great war would start when Turkey would move to secure the water resources in the northern middle east (iirc). Supposedly it would turn global soon, with horrible effects for all.
Interestingly the monk claimed that Greece would not take part in the war, but in its end it will be granted eastern Thrace, along with Constantinople. So yeah, a reason to look into Paisios i guess for anyone interested in such stuff :)
Btw, not really important for atheists, but Paisios is a respected figure in global orthodoxy. Not sure if his prophecies mean anything, but he is not some orthodox equivalent of an american televangelist ;)

Which one of his writings is this found in? I'd be interested in giving it a read if there's an English translation availible. Of course, it should be noted that Elder Paisios has yet to be formally glorified, and even for those recognized Saints who have made prophecy (like St. Seraphim of Sarov), there's no obligation for Orthodox Christians to regard all their words as infallible.

Turkey already controls the water resources of the northern Middle East; it has exclusive control of the upper Euphrates and Tigris. Turkey is by far the most well-off country in water terms in the entire region - if anything the invasion would be the other way around; the Arab states, Armenia, Iran and the Greeks attacking Turkey for its water supplies.

I think it is in the anecdotes and stories narrated by various people who met him, and i am pretty sure there are english translations of those. :) Is he not a formal saint yet? I have seen icons of him inside large local churches, so suspected he already was. He is being referred to as a saint all the time anyway.

Isn't water one of the things that Turkey have an abundance?

Imagine then what will happen with a free Kurdistan ;)

You see that happen a lot, especially with great aesthetics. Fr. Seraphim of Platina has a comparable following in America, in spite of some rather controversial teachings.

Winner's thread has a different tone to this one however.

That's like creationists would leave a thread about evolution and create their own one where they could whine have a different tone....That happened many times here, didn't it? Nevermind, carry on.

Less religious nonsense, more ranting against humans who breed like rabbits, screwing our home planet in the process, please.

We are not breeding like rabbits. The average growth rate is abut 1.5. You are just being alarmist.

No I am not. As the article points out, the rate of growth of human populations in the last century and a half is totally unprecedented. I can't imagine how someone can consider it "normal".

Classical hero didn't use the word normal.
