Remember Syndicate?

We all do, it was kinda awesome.

As most readers probably know, pure evil owns the IP, so reboot time!.

On the bright side, EA has already committed to 1, maybe 2 patches, tops. And since it'll be on consoles, a god awful movie might just be on the works!.

So congratulations EA, for making yet another indiscernible squad shooter, where do you guys get your ideas??. Wish you also the best shooter for when you realize you also own the rights for Dungeon Keeper.

EDIT: too late, already are doing something with the Dungeon Keeper IP.

Never heard of Syndicate?

It was a really popular squad based strategy game back in the day.

I know of it, never played it though despite the fact it came out when i was very much into computer gaming.

From that still it looks similar to Cannon Fodder, another squad-controlling game.

A couple of months ago I read a preview on the new Syndicate on Gamespy, and the first post in the comment section was "Looks like a good shooter, but they should have called it 'Dungeon Keeper'.

Haven't played Syndicate myself, I only moved from console to PC in 1998, but I still have to ask myself WHAT WERE THEY THINKING !? Why use a license if you're making a completely different game ?

But what does the license accomplish? This game's target audience has never heard of Syndicate and fans of the series will just be pissed off.

I suspect (don't know) that it will be marketed as a revamp of an old classic. Still a better line to create expectation than to present an utterly new title (which is of course what this is).

It reminds me of another questionable decision, this time by 2k.

From that article:

"...Hartmann added XCOM's FPS make-over is a matter of renewing the franchise, not overwriting it, saying, “The team behind it is asking themselves every day: ‘Is it true to the values of the franchise?’ It’s not a case of cashing in on the name. We just need to renew it because times are changing."

Yeah, its not a case of cashing in on the name, times are changing and all play fps now.

Just what we need. Another generic FPS for kids. Because we all know - FPS is where all the money is.

It's a shame what they're doing to it, persuadertron armies were always fun (except when I persuaded a guy i was supposed to kill)

i remember that, due to...

don't know the game myself, but i think i have it somewhere on an old cd from a friend :hmm:. Whatever, is probably today not anymore playable, i guess.

I'm with GoodSarmatian on the topic. Doesn't accomplish anything in this way.
I'd understand if they tried to build a whole universe around a brand (like e.g. Warcraft), but that would need a strategy remake first and then possible other things later, and not this way around. It's essentially wasting the name, because it will only piss some people (probably a negligible amount) off and doesn't help to promote the game in other areas.
Besides the talking about wasting a brand, somehow also advertisement, isn't it?

I suppose it sort of is advertising the game a bit, can't come up with the buzzword they probably use for this type of thing... synergistic... alternate... stream... parallel... viral?

Although I'm pretty sure that "make it more like... (insert successful shooter here)" was something they heard a lot during development.

I haven't played the original, but I did play Syndicate Wars (I think it was called). I never finished, I found the game too difficult. The game really excelled at providing a cool futuristic atmosphere and setting. I don't know if this new game does this.

Looks Matrix slick, but basically lots of gratuitous violence with little purpose.
