Seriously, Strategic View in Civ 6 is the hidden gem that I totally was not expecting.

In Civs 4 & 5, I found SV to be useful at times, but mostly unnecessary. But in Civ 6, I've spent more time playing the game in strategic view than in the default 3d view. I think this is because:
  • The 2d art is gorgeous
  • It's 100% functionally equivalent to the 3d game (save for a few UI glitches in citizen management)
  • The ability to zoom out further is much more useful for a game like Civ than the ability to zoom in
  • My work laptop, which barely crosses the minimum specs required, slows to a crawl in the 3d game, but can run the game in strategic mode smoothly. It basically makes Civ 6 accessible to millions more users.
  • Honestly, I think Firaxis could just remove the 3D game entirely and launch a Civ Revolutions 3/Civ 6 Mobile for iPad/Android and I would seriously consider buying it.
Is anyone else pleasantly surprised/absolutely in love with Strategic View? Those of you who played in Civ 5's strategic view, was it as good/better?

It's really great, although I wish something could be done about the monotone fog of war. It's still hard to essentially read two different color palettes at the same time.

I find the Strategic Map an invaluable tool for finding barb huts that spawn in the fog of war. They really stick out a lot better than in default-o vision.
I'm slightly colourblind (bad contrast vision) so the sepia map of the default view means I can't differentiate the barb huts from the monochrome blob.

Otherwise I do not use it much, apart from the times I want a more general overview to make grand strategy decisions.

I play almost exclusively in strategy view. I don't know why they put the camera so close in normal view. Also hills are so hard to see in normal view, I play a warmonger so most of my time is spent moving units around so I need to know where all the hills are at all time.

Love strategic view. 5's wasn't bad, but this ones just better. Haven't played on Mactop yet but knowing strategic view is looking good has me optimistic.

I mainly use it to spot pillaged tiles that need repairing after attack/barbarian raid. Those are much easier to spot in strategic view.

Honestly, other than the difficult to spot hills, and the lack of cultural distinctions (that's not a big deal I know!) I absolutely LOVE the Civ 6 strategic view!

yeah citizen management annoys me too but i play in SV since it doesn't cause driver issues lol

I want the option to remove the fog of war like in Civ 5 so I can see what tiles are desert, plains or grassland. Turning on the yield icons to try and deduce them is not as satisfying as actually seeing the tiles.

I play most of the time in strategic view since ~1 week, the only thing I'd like would be a sort of very transparent color filling of my borders to better see where my empire is and where not. But yes it's great!

It's awesome, although does anyone else have trouble selecting and using planes in strategic view?

It looks wonderful except for the fog of war, and hills still being too difficult to pick out.
Well, fog of war is awful in normal view too. And finding hills is easier in strategic view for me.

I also like 2d district/wonders aesthetic and faster turn times. The only gripe for me is it's hard to use city attack with garrison.

I love the strategic view and play my late games with it. What I don't like is that it still tries to play the wonder movies in 3d mode without changing to 3d mode before that. They could display a picture of the wonder or switch to 3d mode for that. As it is now, it feels very strange.

I play on a computer that doesnt meet the minimum specs (no quad core) and strategic view means that when the machine starts to chug and stutter i can keep playing.

The squiggly borders need to go (in the World Builder as well, please, once it's properly released), and the FoW should return to the Civ V style. Also, I'd prefer that hills stand out more, especially in the jungle. In Civ V they used a huge, 'single hill' graphic in the Strategic View; this made it impossible to mistake them, but otoh it did look a little too gamey. I'd prefer them giving the individual 'hillocks' stronger outlines.

Other than these complaints, though, I prefer this version of the SV to the Civ V one, and especially to the 'busy' default graphics (performance is fine for me either way, although could differ on the modded larger map sizes).

EDIT: Your poll is flawed, as it lacks two vital options:

* Better than Civ V, but could be improved
* Other (please explain) [should be part of every poll]

The strategic view in 6 is lovely. I know I mostly complain about the game, but I have to admit it is visually the most beautiful installment in the series - by far.

I play exclusively in strategic view.
