Anyone up for a new Chieftan SG?

I kinda wanted Warlord anyway. Don't particularly like the greeks but hey I don't care, and at least they have a UU that will stand up to anything. Don't care about map size much. Agree with the lack of accelerated production, cultural starting, and respawn. Land is fine, although I like Pangaea. Let the Newbies play cause the pros already know how, unless they really want to play. Ten each or Twenty each for turns I don't think the starter should have any advantage, although we could change it to 10 as the turns become more demanding. But whatever.

Just thought I would point out that you guys aren't as "alone" in this endeavor as you might feel. Sullla's post pointed out to me that some of the other, really good players are looking at this, too. :) If you didn't know it, Sullla is one of the (growing) handful of SG players who seem to be able to handle this game with no problem even at Deity. Along with Sirian, Arathorn, Zed-F, Jaffa Tamarin, and others, he helped with the initial round of Training Day Games, creating a crop of SG-ers so they would have somebody they could play with!

Just check out some of the RBE... and RBD... and LOTR... games to see what a good team of really good players can accomplish. :D

1) Chieftain or Warlord?
Well, I already said I would prefer Warlord. :D

2) Which Civ?
Again, I would probably go English, just to be mean. ;) Greeks are okay, though.

3) Map Size?
I would prefer Standard, but whatever is agreed upon is fine.

4) Customization?
No civ restart, no accelerated production and no linked starting locations. Continents or Pangea. Random Age and Weather. My biggest concern with random Barbs is that one option is "None", which also means no Goody Huts! For a Training Day Game, I would go with Restless - they're there, and they will attack you, but the nuisance factor is kept relatively low.

5) Who plays?
Well, if I do agree to mentor here :D I will not play, but just offer critiques.

6) How many turns each?
20 for the 1st, 10 thereafter. The reason being that otherwise the first player does a lot of nothing: Build city, start production, start worker working, <Return>, <Return>, <Return>, <Return>, etc.

Warlord would be ok I think.....don't have the manual handy (on a break at work), whats the diff between that and Chieftain?

I agree with Padma's recommendations, except my vote would be for Germans for the civ (have never played them yet).

But general consensus is English or Greeks so far, so looks like it'll probably be one of those.

So we have five now I think?:

Me
Wetterlind
VinCaiden
archer_007
ZeekLTK

and whoever would like to be the guru, if any (*cough* Padma ;) )

You guys willing to adopt another member? I'm in ct3 but it's going nowhere fast, and I think a warlord sg would be good. I understand you've already got five any may not want another, but if you're open to it I'd like to play. :)

Do you have room for another player? I recently have gotten Civ3 after plying Civ2 for several years. Just let me know.

Thanks:D

Try the Persians. They are scientific and industrious. I am finishing up a game with the Persians and I am ahead in tech and have over 15,000 gold. They also have a good UU - Immortals.

Yes, but we're trying to make it a learning experience and use a civ that doesn't have advantages like being scientific and industrious :)

Hmm...now we have 7 that want to play. Never thought this idea would get this popular!

Thanks for letting me in. If you do not want to use a civ that is scientific and industrious, then lets try either the Zulus, Iroquoi, Aztecs, or Japanese. These are either religious, expansionistic, or militaristic. Samurai would be nice to have.

Standard map,
wet, 5 billion years old, normal temp, and no pangea.

I got clobbered by Persia & China in a pangea game not too long ago.

Alrighty, so should we get this started tomorrow?

Is 7 too many for a SG? never done one before...

Suggestion: This game has filled up with 7 people less barely 24 hours after it was posted. That would indicate there are a *LOT* of people interested in playing succession games out there who have probably been turned off by the high difficulty ones running at the moment. Why don't you split into two teams and run two separate games? Or, if you want to make it a bit more "unusual" you could run a RBD23-type scenario where two teams play the same game and see which one does better (can't read the other team's game thread of course). :p Just throwing out some random ideas here people, but the strong showing of interest would suggest that running two games is probably a good idea.

If you didn't know it, Sullla is one of the (growing) handful of SG players who seem to be able to handle this game with no problem even at Deity. Along with Sirian, Arathorn, Zed-F, Jaffa Tamarin, and others, he helped with the initial round of Training Day Games, creating a crop of SG-ers so they would have somebody they could play with!

Ahhh, but if you look far enough back in the Succesion Games forum you'll see that I myself got my training here months and months ago, back in March and April. Sirian, Zed, and Jaffa on the other hand have been here since December; they're the ones I followed and learned from reading about their games. It's a testament to their teaching skills that I was ever able to reach where I am today in Civ3. :grad:

I second Sulllas idea of splitting us newbies into two groups. That RBD23-type of game sounds fun to me (RBD23 is what?! ). My bold suggestion is that Padma tutors one group and Sullla the other, as they are both (extremely) experienced players and active in this thread. Is this OK with yo’ pros?

Palyers this far
Group 1:
D-Tox
ZeekLTK
archer_007
Wetterlind

Group 2:
VinCaiden
BoBtheBUILDER
Infoman
(open spot, perhaps you?)

Mentors:
Padma
Sullla (?)

This grouping is solely based on appearance in the thread. Are groups of four or five preferred? Oh, and if we decied on the English, please lets use a map that is not pangea!

Could I join a team? I'm in another game now but I think I could handle two - especially if we get a mentor like Padma or Sulla. It is a great way to learn the game.

Let me know.

stwils:)

Two Groups is a really good idea, besides I'll get to start a game!
I think the Greeks would be good personally but my favorite trait and one of the best is religious. (IMO) Two games against each other is a really cool idea, almost like a contest. I hope we can get started soon cause I have to go away for the weekend. Forgot about that, maye someone else should start, cause I won't be back til Monday

Sullla, I think that is an excellent idea! You're right, we appear to have a lot of "hungry" players out there. (Would you be able to handle one of the "teams"? :D )

For those of you not fully certain of what Sullla means by "RBD23-type scenario", the RBD23 game was split into 3 teams, each of which played the same game, in a contest to see which could get the best score. If you want to see how it worked, check out these threads:

Main RBD23 Thread
Team A
Team B
Team C

One of the most important rules of this type of game is to not check out the other team's thread. Doing so could give you insights into things your game/team has no knowledge of, and is therefore cheating of the worst order. One central thread is maintained where everyone can get together to discuss things without giving anything away. Check out the Main Thread above for an example.

If we do this, then the mentor(s) will set up the game and post the starting position in each team thread.

Another thing to consider: I, along with many other SG players, prefer to play by "honorable" rules. Primarily, that means we don't use "exploits" to take advantage of the AI. It also often includes things like "No RoP Rape". The level of "honor" required in a game may be high enough to seriously hamstring players, especially on higher levels. (Epic 12 From the Realms Beyond site comes to mind :D ) A good place to get an understanding of "honorable" rules is the Realms Beyond site, which, unfortunately, I don't have a link for at the moment. Perhaps Sullla can provide it.

Anyway, discuss these things! :D

Team play sounds fun to me

Ahh...never thought of the teams playing the same game idea before. This sounds like it will be fun if we do it! :)

I'm not amiss to provide some general guidance/mentorship to a team, but I simply don't have the time to do a SUL4 or Sirian PROD level of commentary. (Translation to newcomers: I'm willing to provide some general comments but not do extremely in-depth critiques of each turn). That's probably a good thing for everyone, myself included. Sure, I won't be amiss to advising a team of 4 players; that wouldn't be so difficult.

I'd like to see the 8 people who have expressed interest so far come to a bit more of a consensus on the type of game to be played before creating a start though. Do we want to run an RBD23-type situation of parallel games? For the curious, here's the idea behind that:

RBD23 the competitors :)
Here is the signup thread for "the competitors" idea. There will be two teams. Both will have exactly the same starting locations. Both will have exactly the same map. Both will have exactly the same opponents. However, both will have incredibly different players. All public announcements will go in this thread. Both teams will start their own thread once teams have been finalised and games have been posted. The winning team has the highest score - not that there are any prizes or anything for it, but it'll be fun. No looking at the other teams game thread

So that's the idea behind that. But we could also run one game on Warlord and a different game on Chieftan, for people who would prefer one difficulty over the other. I'd be in favor of randomizing the map settings rather than picking them, and letting the players involved choose the civ. Uhh, but after the experience with RBE23, I would also like to customize the map a bit in the editor after generating it randomly to ensure a more fair start. And please no larger than a standard map size, in the interests of time. :)

By the way, there's also no limit to the number of players who can be in on this thing. The original RBD23 planned to have two teams but ended up with three because there was so much interest in the idea. So if you're out there reading this, don't be afraid to sign up. :goodjob: Ideally we will have the details for this concept hammered out by the weekend and be ready to start by Sunday at the latest.
